1 After this he left Athens and went to Corinth.	1 Plus tard, Paul quitta Athènes et vint à Corinthe.
2 And he found a Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, lately come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had commanded all the Jews to leave Rome. And he went to see them;	2 Il trouva là un Juif du nom d’Aquilas, originaire du Pont, qui arrivait juste d’Italie avec sa femme Priscille à la suite d’un décret de Claude; en effet, tous les Juifs avaient reçu l’ordre de quitter Rome. Paul s’attacha à eux;
3 and because he was of the same trade he stayed with them, and they worked, for by trade they were tentmakers.	3 ils avaient le même métier et fabriquaient des tentes, aussi demeurait-il et travaillait-il avec eux.
4 And he argued in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded Jews and Greeks.	4 Chaque sabbat il avait des entretiens à la synagogue, tâchant de convaincre les Juifs comme les Grecs.
5 When Silas and Timothy arrived from Macedonia, Paul was occupied with preaching, testifying to the Jews that the Christ was Jesus.	5 Lorsque Silas et Timothée arrivèrent de Macédoine, Paul commença à se consacrer à la Parole, affirmant aux Juifs que Jésus était le Messie.
6 And when they opposed and reviled him, he shook out his garments and said to them, "Your blood be upon your heads! I am innocent. From now on I will go to the Gentiles."	6 Eux lui répondirent avec des insultes; alors il secoua devant eux ses vêtements et leur dit: "Vous serez responsables de ce qui vous arrivera, moi je n’y serai pour rien. 7 And he left there and went to the house of a man named Titius Justus, a worshiper of God; his house was next door to the synagogue.	7 Paul changea d’endroit; il alla vivre chez Titus Justus, un adorateur de Dieu dont la maison était juste à côté de la synagogue.
8 Crispus, the ruler of the synagogue, believed in the Lord, together with all his household; and many of the Corinthians hearing Paul believed and were baptized.	8 Un chef de la synagogue, Crispus, crut au Seigneur ainsi que toute sa maison; de même, parmi les Corinthiens qui l’écoutaient, beaucoup croyaient et se faisaient baptiser.
9 And the Lord said to Paul one night in a vision, "Do not be afraid, but speak and do not be silent;	9 Une nuit le Seigneur dit à Paul dans une vision: "Ne crains pas, continue de parler, ne te tais pas.
10 for I am with you, and no man shall attack you to harm you; for I have many people in this city."	10 Je suis avec toi et personne ne te fera de mal; sache que j’ai ici dans cette ville un peuple nombreux.”
11 And he stayed a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them.	11 Paul continua donc de leur enseigner la parole de Dieu; il demeura là un an et six mois.
12 But when Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews made a united attack upon Paul and brought him before the tribunal,	12 Dans le temps où le gouverneur de l’Achaïe était Gallion, les Juifs se mirent d’accord pour manifester contre Paul. Ils le traînèrent au tribunal
13 saying, "This man is persuading men to worship God contrary to the law."	13 en disant: "Cet homme veut amener les gens à servir Dieu d’une manière qui contredit la Loi.”
14 But when Paul was about to open his mouth, Gallio said to the Jews, "If it were a matter of wrongdoing or vicious crime, I should have reason to bear with you, O Jews;	14 Paul allait prendre la parole lorsque Gallion dit aux Juifs: "S’il s’agissait d’un délit ou d’une action malintentionnée, j’aurais le devoir de vous écouter, messieurs les Juifs.
15 but since it is a matter of questions about words and names and your own law, see to it yourselves; I refuse to be a judge of these things."	15 Mais si ce sont des discussions à propos de messages, de puissances supérieures ou de votre loi, voyez vous-mêmes, je ne veux pas me faire votre juge pour ces affaires-là.”
16 And he drove them from the tribunal.	16 Là-dessus il leur fit dégager le tribunal.
17 And they all seized Sosthenes, the ruler of the synagogue, and beat him in front of the tribunal. But Gallio paid no attention to this.	17 Mais en face du tribunal tous se mirent à frapper Sosthène, qui était chef de synagogue, et Gallion ne fit rien pour l’empêcher.
18 After this Paul stayed many days longer, and then took leave of the brethren and sailed for Syria, and with him Priscilla and Aquila. At Cenchre-ae he cut his hair, for he had a vow.	18 Paul resta encore un bon bout de temps, puis il prit congé des frères et s’embarqua pour la Syrie; Priscille et Aquilas l’accompagnaient. Il avait fait un vœu et seulement quand il fut au port, à Cenchrées, il se rasa la tête.
19 And they came to Ephesus, and he left them there; but he himself went into the synagogue and argued with the Jews.	19 Arrivé à Éphèse il se sépara d’eux. Il était entré à la synagogue et il avait commencé à parler aux Juifs.
20 When they asked him to stay for a longer period, he declined;	20 Eux lui demandaient de s’attarder plus longtemps, mais il ne voulut pas.
21 but on taking leave of them he said, "I will return to you if God wills," and he set sail from Ephesus.	21 Il prit congé d’eux avec ces mots: "Je reviendrai chez vous si Dieu le veut.” Puis il quitta Éphèse avec le voilier.
22 When he had landed at Caesarea, he went up and greeted the church, and then went down to Antioch.	22 Paul débarqua à Césarée; il monta saluer l’Église, puis il descendit à Antioche.
23 After spending some time there he departed and went from place to place through the region of Galatia and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples.	23 Il y resta un certain temps, puis il repartit. Il parcourut successivement la région des Galates ou, si l’on veut, la Phrygie, en vue d’affermir les disciples.
24 Now a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was an eloquent man, well versed in the scriptures.	24 Un Juif du nom d’Apollos était arrivé à Éphèse. Il était originaire d’Alexandrie et très fort sur les Écritures; c’était un vrai orateur.
25 He had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, though he knew only the baptism of John.	25 On lui avait enseigné le chemin du Seigneur et il parlait avec beaucoup d’enthousiasme. Il enseignait de façon correcte ce qui se rapportait à Jésus, mais il ne savait pas plus loin que le baptême de Jean.
26 He began to speak boldly in the synagogue; but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him and expounded to him the way of God more accurately.	26 Il parlait donc très librement dans la synagogue. Priscille et Aquilas l’entendirent, ils le prirent à part et lui exposèrent le Chemin plus en détail.
27 And when he wished to cross to Achaia, the brethren encouraged him, and wrote to the disciples to receive him. When he arrived, he greatly helped those who through grace had believed,	27 Comme il avait l’intention de passer en Achaïe, les frères l’y encouragèrent, écrivant aux disciples de là-bas de l’accueillir. De fait, quand il arriva, il aida beaucoup ceux qui avaient cru par grâce de Dieu,
28 for he powerfully confuted the Jews in public, showing by the scriptures that the Christ was Jesus.	28 car il discutait fermement en public avec les Juifs, prouvant par les Écritures que Jésus est le Messie.
