1 In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came by Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel the son of She-alti-el, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest,	1 בִּשְׁנַת שְׁתַּיִם לְדָרְיָוֶשׁ הַמֶּלֶךְ בַּחֹדֶשׁ הַשִּׁשִּׁי בְּיֹום אֶחָד לַחֹדֶשׁ הָיָה דְבַר־יְהוָה בְּיַד־חַגַּי הַנָּבִיא אֶל־זְרֻבָּבֶל בֶּן־שְׁאַלְתִּיאֵל פַּחַת יְהוּדָה וְאֶל־יְהֹושֻׁעַ בֶּן־יְהֹוצָדָק הַכֹּהֵן הַגָּדֹול לֵאמֹר
2 "Thus says the LORD of hosts: This people say the time has not yet come to rebuild the house of the LORD."	2 כֹּה אָמַר יְהוָה צְבָאֹות לֵאמֹר הָעָם הַזֶּה אָמְרוּ לֹא עֶת־בֹּא עֶת־בֵּית יְהוָה לְהִבָּנֹות׃ פ
3 Then the word of the LORD came by Haggai the prophet,	3 וַיְהִי דְּבַר־יְהוָה בְּיַד־חַגַּי הַנָּבִיא לֵאמֹר
4 "Is it a time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins?	4 הַעֵת לָכֶם אַתֶּם לָשֶׁבֶת בְּבָתֵּיכֶם סְפוּנִים וְהַבַּיִת הַזֶּה חָרֵב
5 Now therefore thus says the LORD of hosts: Consider how you have fared.	5 וְעַתָּה כֹּה אָמַר יְהוָה צְבָאֹות שִׂימוּ לְבַבְכֶם עַל־דַּרְכֵיכֶם
6 You have sown much, and harvested little; you eat, but you never have enough; you drink, but you never have your fill; you clothe yourselves, but no one is warm; and he who earns wages earns wages to put them into a bag with holes.	6 זְרַעְתֶּם הַרְבֵּה וְהָבֵא מְעָט אָכֹול וְאֵין־לְשָׂבְעָה שָׁתֹו וְאֵין־לְשָׁכְרָה לָבֹושׁ וְאֵין־לְחֹם לֹו וְהַמִּשְׂתַּכֵּר מִשְׂתַּכֵּר אֶל־צְרֹור נָקוּב׃ פ
7 "Thus says the LORD of hosts: Consider how you have fared.	7 כֹּה אָמַר יְהוָה צְבָאֹות שִׂימוּ לְבַבְכֶם עַל־דַּרְכֵיכֶם
8 Go up to the hills and bring wood and build the house, that I may take pleasure in it and that I may appear in my glory, says the LORD.	8 עֲלוּ הָהָר וַהֲבֵאתֶם עֵץ וּבְנוּ הַבָּיִת וְאֶרְצֶה־בֹּו [וְאֶכָּבֵד כ] (וְאֶכָּבְדָה ק) אָמַר יְהוָה
9 You have looked for much, and, lo, it came to little; and when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why? says the LORD of hosts. Because of my house that lies in ruins, while you busy yourselves each with his own house.	9 פָּנֹה אֶל־הַרְבֵּה וְהִנֵּה לִמְעָט וַהֲבֵאתֶם הַבַּיִת וְנָפַחְתִּי בֹו יַעַן מֶה נְאֻם יְהוָה צְבָאֹות יַעַן בֵּיתִי אֲשֶׁר־הוּא חָרֵב וְאַתֶּם רָצִים אִישׁ לְבֵיתֹו
10 Therefore the heavens above you have withheld the dew, and the earth has withheld its produce.	10 עַל־כֵּן עֲלֵיכֶם כָּלְאוּ שָׁמַיִם מִטָּל וְהָאָרֶץ כָּלְאָה יְבוּלָהּ
11 And I have called for a drought upon the land and the hills, upon the grain, the new wine, the oil, upon what the ground brings forth, upon men and cattle, and upon all their labors."	11 וָאֶקְרָא חֹרֶב עַל־הָאָרֶץ וְעַל־הֶהָרִים וְעַל־הַדָּגָן וְעַל־הַתִּירֹושׁ וְעַל־הַיִּצְהָר וְעַל אֲשֶׁר תֹּוצִיא הָאֲדָמָה וְעַל־הָאָדָם וְעַל־הַבְּהֵמָה וְעַל כָּל־יְגִיעַ כַּפָּיִם׃ ס
12 Then Zerubbabel the son of She-alti-el, and Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the LORD their God had sent him; and the people feared before the LORD.	12 וַיִּשְׁמַע זְרֻבָּבֶל ׀ בֶּן־שַׁלְתִּיאֵל וִיהֹושֻׁעַ בֶּן־יְהֹוצָדָק הַכֹּהֵן הַגָּדֹול וְכֹל ׀ שְׁאֵרִית הָעָם בְּקֹול יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיהֶם וְעַל־דִּבְרֵי חַגַּי הַנָּבִיא כַּאֲשֶׁר שְׁלָחֹו יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיהֶם וַיִּירְאוּ הָעָם מִפְּנֵי יְהוָה
13 Then Haggai, the messenger of the LORD, spoke to the people with the LORD's message, "I am with you, says the LORD."	13 וַיֹּאמֶר חַגַּי מַלְאַךְ יְהוָה בְּמַלְאֲכוּת יְהוָה לָעָם לֵאמֹר אֲנִי אִתְּכֶם נְאֻם־יְהוָה
14 And the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of She-alti-el, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and worked on the house of the LORD of hosts, their God,	14 וַיָּעַר יְהוָה אֶת־רוּחַ זְרֻבָּבֶל בֶּן־שַׁלְתִּיאֵל פַּחַת יְהוּדָה וְאֶת־רוּחַ יְהֹושֻׁעַ בֶּן־יְהֹוצָדָק הַכֹּהֵן הַגָּדֹול וְאֶת־רוּחַ כֹּל שְׁאֵרִית הָעָם וַיָּבֹאוּ וַיַּעֲשׂוּ מְלָאכָה בְּבֵית־יְהוָה צְבָאֹות אֱלֹהֵיהֶם׃ פ
15 on the twenty-fourth day of the month, in the sixth month.	15 בְּיֹום עֶשְׂרִים וְאַרְבָּעָה לַחֹדֶשׁ בַּשִּׁשִּׁי בִּשְׁנַת שְׁתַּיִם לְדָרְיָוֶשׁ הַמֶּלֶךְ
	16 אֲנָשִׁים אַחִים מִן־הַצֹּרֶךְ הָיָה כִּי יִמָּלֵא הַכָּתוּב הַהוּא אֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר מִקֶּדֶם רוּחַ הַקֹּדֶשׁ בְּפִי דָוִד עַל־יְהוּדָה אֲשֶׁר הָיָה מוֹלִיךְ אֶת־תֹּפְשֵׂי יֵשׁוּעַ
	17 כִּי־הָיָה נִמְנֶה אִתָּנוּ וְזָכָה בְּגוֹרַל הַשֵּׁרוּת הַזֶּה
	18 וְהִנֵּה הוּא קָנָה־לוֹ שָׂדֶה בִּמְחִיר הָרִשְׁעָה וַיִּפֹּל עַל־פָּנָיו אַרְצָה וַיִּבָּקַע בַּתָּוֶךְ וַיִּשָּׁפְכוּ כָּל־מֵעָיו
	19 וְגַם־נוֹדְעָה זֹאת לְכָל־ישְׁבֵי יְרוּשָׁלָיִם וַיִּקָּרֵא בִשְׂפָתָם לַשָּׂדֶה הַהוּא חֲקַל דְּמָא הוּא שְׂדֵה הַדָּם
	20 כִּי כָתוּב בְּסֵפֶר תְּהִלִּים תְּהִי־טִירָתוֹ נְשַׁמָּה וְאַל־יְהִי בָהּ ישֵׁב וּפְקֻדָּתוֹ יִקַּח אַחֵר
	21 וְעַל־כֵּן מִן־הַצֹּרֶךְ כִּי מִן־הָאֲנָשִׁים הָאֵלֶּה אֲשֶׁר הִתְהַלְּכוּ אִתָּנוּ כָּל־יְמֵי הֱיוֹת אֲדֹנֵינוּ יֵשׁוּעַ יוֹצֵא וָבָא לְפָנֵינוּ
	22 הָחֵל מִטְּבִילַת יוֹחָנָן עַד־יוֹם הִלָּקְחוֹ מֵאִתָּנוּ כִּי אֶחָד מֵהֶם יִהְיֶה לְעֵד עִמָּנוּ עַל־קוּמוֹ מִן־הַמֵּתִים
	23 וַיַּעֲמִידוּ שְׁנַיִם אֶת־יוֹסֵף הַנִּקְרָא בַר־שַׁבָּא וְהוּא מְכֻנֶּה יוּסְטוֹס וְאֵת מַתִּיָּה
	24 וַיִּתְפַּלְלוּ וַיֹּאמְרוּ אַתָּה אֲדֹנָי הַיּוֹדֵעַ כָּל־הַלְּבָבוֹת הַרְאֵה־נָא מִן־הַשְּׁנַיִם הָאֵלֶּה אֶת־הָאֶחָד אֲשֶׁר־בָּחַרְתָּ בּוֹ
	25 לָקַחַת אֶת־גּוֹרַל הַשֵּׁרוּת הַזֶּה וְהַשְּׁלִיחוּת אֲשֶׁר סָר מִמֶּנָּה יְהוּדָה לַהֲלֹךְ אֶל־מְקוֹמוֹ
	26 וַיַּפִּילוּ גּוֹרָלוֹת וַיִּפֹּל הַגּוֹרָל עַל־מַתִּיָּה וַיִּסָּפַח אֶל־אַחַד עָשָׂר הַשְּׁלִיחִים
