When Balaam saw that it pleased the LORD to bless Israel, he did not go, as at other times, to look for omens, but set his face toward the wilderness.1 Balaam vit alors que Yahvé trouvait bon de bénir Israël.
And Balaam lifted up his eyes, and saw Israel encamping tribe by tribe. And the Spirit of God came upon him,2 Levant les yeux, Balaam vit Israël, établi par tribus; l'esprit de Dieu vint sur lui
and he took up his discourse, and said, "The oracle of Balaam the son of Beor, the oracle of the man whose eye is opened,3 et il prononça son poème. Il dit: "Oracle de Balaam, fils de Béor, oracle de l'homme au regardpénétrant,
the oracle of him who hears the words of God, who sees the vision of the Almighty, falling down, but having his eyes uncovered:4 oracle de celui qui écoute les paroles de Dieu.
how fair are your tents, O Jacob, your encampments, O Israel!5 Que tes tentes sont belles, Jacob! et tes demeures, Israël!
Like valleys that stretch afar, like gardens beside a river, like aloes that the LORD has planted, like cedar trees beside the waters.6 Comme des vallées qui s'étendent, comme des jardins au bord d'un fleuve, comme des aloès queYahvé a plantés, comme des cèdres auprès des eaux!
Water shall flow from his buckets, and his seed shall be in many waters, his king shall be higher than Agag, and his kingdom shall be exalted.7 Un héros grandit dans sa descendance, il domine sur des peuples nombreux.
God brings him out of Egypt; he has as it were the horns of the wild ox, he shall eat up the nations his adversaries, and shall break their bones in pieces, and pierce them through with his arrows.8 Dieu le fait sortir d'Egypte, il est pour lui comme des cornes de buffle.
He couched, he lay down like a lion, and like a lioness; who will rouse him up?
And Balak's anger was kindled against Balaam, and he struck his hands together; and Balak said to Balaam, "I called you to curse my enemies, and behold, you have blessed them these three times.10 Balaq se mit en colère contre Balaam. Il frappa des mains et dit à Balaam: "Je t'avais mandépour maudire mes ennemis, et voilà que tu les bénis, et par trois fois!
Therefore now flee to your place; I said, 'I will certainly honor you,' but the LORD has held you back from honor."11 Et maintenant déguerpis et va-t'en chez toi. J'avais dit que je te comblerais d'honneurs. C'estYahvé qui t'en a privé."
And Balaam said to Balak, "Did I not tell your messengers whom you sent to me,12 Balaam répondit à Balaq: "N'avais-je pas dit déjà à tes messagers:
'If Balak should give me his house full of silver and gold, I would not be able to go beyond the word of the LORD, to do either good or bad of my own will; what the LORD speaks, that will I speak?13 Quand Balaq me donnerait plein sa maison d'argent et d'or, je ne pourrais transgresser l'ordre deYahvé et faire de moi-même ni bien ni mal; ce que Yahvé dira, c'est ce que je dirai?
And now, behold, I am going to my people; come, I will let you know what this people will do to your people in the latter days."14 Maintenant que je pars chez les miens, viens, je vais t'aviser de ce que ce peuple fera à tonpeuple, dans l'avenir."
And he took up his discourse, and said, "The oracle of Balaam the son of Beor, the oracle of the man whose eye is opened,15 Alors il prononça son poème. Il dit: "Oracle de Balaam, fils de Béor, oracle de l'homme auregard pénétrant,
the oracle of him who hears the words of God, and knows the knowledge of the Most High, who sees the vision of the Almighty, falling down, but having his eyes uncovered:16 oracle de celui qui écoute les paroles de Dieu, de celui qui sait la science du Très-Haut.
I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not nigh: a star shall come forth out of Jacob, and a scepter shall rise out of Israel; it shall crush the forehead of Moab, and break down all the sons of Sheth.17 Je le vois -- mais non pour maintenant, je l'aperçois -- mais non de près: Un astre issu de Jacobdevient chef, un sceptre se lève, issu d'Israël.
Edom shall be dispossessed, Seir also, his enemies, shall be dispossessed, while Israel does valiantly.18 Edom devient un pays conquis; pays conquis, Séïr. Israël déploie sa puissance,
By Jacob shall dominion be exercised, and the survivors of cities be destroyed!"19 Jacob domine sur ses ennemis et fait périr les rescapés d'Ar."
Then he looked on Amalek, and took up his discourse, and said, "Amalek was the first of the nations, but in the end he shall come to destruction."20 Balaam vit Amaleq, il prononça son poème. Il dit: "Amaleq: prémices des nations! Mais sapostérité périra pour toujours."
And he looked on the Kenite, and took up his discourse, and said, "Enduring is your dwelling place, and your nest is set in the rock;21 Puis il vit les Qénites, il prononça son poème. Il dit: "Ta demeure fut stable, Qayîn, et ton nidjuché sur le rocher.
nevertheless Kain shall be wasted. How long shall Asshur take you away captive?"22 Mais le nid appartient à Béor; jusques à quand seras-tu captif d'Assur?"
And he took up his discourse, and said, "Alas, who shall live when God does this?23 Puis il prononça son poème. Il dit: "Des peuples de la Mer se rassemblent au nord,
But ships shall come from Kittim and shall afflict Asshur and Eber; and he also shall come to destruction."24 des vaisseaux du côté de Kittim. Ils oppriment Assur, ils oppriment Ebèr, lui aussi périra pourtoujours."
Then Balaam rose, and went back to his place; and Balak also went his way.25 Puis Balaam se leva, partit et retourna chez lui. Balaq lui aussi passa son chemin.
