1 The LORD spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying,	1 And the Lord spoke to Moses in the desert of Sinai, in the tabernacle of the covenant, on the first day of the second month, in the year after their departure from Egypt, saying:
2 "Take a census of all the congregation of the people of Israel, by families, by fathers' houses, according to the number of names, every male, head by head;	2 “Take a total of the entire assembly of the sons of Israel, by their families and houses, and the names of each one, of whomever is of the male sex,
3 from twenty years old and upward, all in Israel who are able to go forth to war, you and Aaron shall number them, company by company.	3 from twenty years and above, of all the able-bodied men out of Israel, and you shall number them by their companies, you and Aaron.
4 And there shall be with you a man from each tribe, each man being the head of the house of his fathers.	4 And there shall be with you the leaders of the tribes, as well as of the houses, in their kinships,
5 And these are the names of the men who shall attend you. From Reuben, Elizur the son of Shedeur;	5 the names of whom are these: of Ruben, Elizur the son of Shedeur;
6 from Simeon, Shelumi-el the son of Zurishaddai;	6 of Simeon, Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai;
7 from Judah, Nahshon the son of Amminadab;	7 of Judah, Nahshon the son of Amminadab;
8 from Issachar, Nethanel the son of Zuar;	8 of Issachar, Nathanael the son of Zuar;
9 from Zebulun, Eliab the son of Helon;	9 of Zebulon, Eliab the son of Helon.
10 from the sons of Joseph, from Ephraim, Elishama the son of Ammihud, and from Manasseh, Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur;	10 And from the sons of Joseph: of Ephraim, Elishama the son of Ammihud; of Manasseh, Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur;
11 from Benjamin, Abidan the son of Gideoni;	11 of Benjamin, Abidan the son of Gideoni;
12 from Dan, Ahi-ezer the son of Ammishaddai;	12 of Dan, Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai;
13 from Asher, Pagiel the son of Ochran;	13 of Asher, Pagiel the son of Ochran;
14 from Gad, Eliasaph the son of Deuel;	14 of Gad, Eliasaph the son of Reuel;
15 from Naphtali, Ahira the son of Enan."	15 of Naphtali, Ahira the son of Enan.”
16 These were the ones chosen from the congregation, the leaders of their ancestral tribes, the heads of the clans of Israel.	16 These are the very noble leaders of the multitude, by their tribes and kinships, and the heads of the army of Israel.
17 Moses and Aaron took these men who have been named,	17 Moses and Aaron took these, with all the multitude of the common people,
18 and on the first day of the second month, they assembled the whole congregation together, who registered themselves by families, by fathers' houses, according to the number of names from twenty years old and upward, head by head,	18 and they gathered them together on the first day of the second month, taking a census of them by kinships, and houses, and families, and heads, and the names of each one from twenty years and above,
19 as the LORD commanded Moses. So he numbered them in the wilderness of Sinai.	19 just as the Lord had instructed Moses. And they were numbered in the desert of Sinai.
20 The people of Reuben, Israel's first-born, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go forth to war:	20 Of Ruben, the firstborn of Israel, by their generations and families and houses, and the names of each head, of all who were of the male sex, from twenty years and above, capable of going to war,
21 the number of the tribe of Reuben was forty-six thousand five hundred.	21 there were forty-six thousand five hundred.
22 Of the people of Simeon, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, those of them that were numbered, according to the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go forth to war:	22 Of the sons of Simeon, by their generations and families, and the houses of their kinships, having been counted by the names and heads of each one, of all who were of the male sex, from twenty years and above, capable of going to war,
23 the number of the tribe of Simeon was fifty-nine thousand three hundred.	23 there were fifty-nine thousand three hundred.
24 Of the people of Gad, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go forth to war:	24 Of the sons of Gad, by their generations and families, and the houses of their kinships, having been counted by the names of each one, from twenty years and above, of all who could go forth to war,
25 the number of the tribe of Gad was forty-five thousand six hundred and fifty.	25 there were forty-five thousand six hundred fifty.
26 Of the people of Judah, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go forth to war:	26 Of the sons of Judah, by their generations and families, and the houses of their kinships, by the names of each one, from twenty years and above, of all who were able to go forth to war,
27 the number of the tribe of Judah was seventy-four thousand six hundred.	27 there were counted seventy-four thousand six hundred.
28 Of the people of Issachar, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go forth to war:	28 Of the sons of Issachar, by their generations and families, and the houses of their kinships, by the names of each one, from twenty years and above, of all who could go forth to war,
29 the number of the tribe of Issachar was fifty-four thousand four hundred.	29 there were counted fifty-four thousand four hundred.
30 Of the people of Zebulun, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go forth to war:	30 Of the sons of Zebulon, by their generations and families, and the houses of their kinships, having been counted by the names of each one, from twenty years and above, of all who were able to go forth to war,
31 the number of the tribe of Zebulun was fifty-seven thousand four hundred.	31 there were fifty-seven thousand four hundred.
32 Of the people of Joseph, namely, of the people of Ephraim, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go forth to war:	32 From the sons of Joseph, of the sons of Ephraim, by their generations and families, and the houses of their kinships, having been counted by the names of each one, from twenty years and above, of all who were able to go forth to war,
33 the number of the tribe of Ephraim was forty thousand five hundred.	33 there were forty thousand five hundred.
34 Of the people of Manasseh, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go forth to war:	34 Furthermore, of the sons of Manasseh, by their generations and families, and the houses of their kinships, having been counted by the names of each one, from twenty years and above, of all who were able to go forth to war,
35 the number of the tribe of Manasseh was thirty-two thousand two hundred.	35 there were thirty-two thousand two hundred.
36 Of the people of Benjamin, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go forth to war:	36 Of the sons of Benjamin, by their generations and families, and the houses of their kinships, having been counted by the names of each one, from twenty years and above, of all who were able to go forth to war,
37 the number of the tribe of Benjamin was thirty-five thousand four hundred.	37 there were thirty-five thousand four hundred.
38 Of the people of Dan, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go forth to war:	38 Of the sons of Dan, by their generations and families, and the houses of their kinships, having been counted by the names of each one, from twenty years and above, of all who were able to go forth to war,
39 the number of the tribe of Dan was sixty-two thousand seven hundred.	39 there were sixty-two thousand seven hundred.
40 Of the people of Asher, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go forth to war:	40 Of the sons of Asher, by their generations and families, and the houses of their kinships, having been counted by the names of each one, from twenty years and above, of all who were able to go forth to war,
41 the number of the tribe of Asher was forty-one thousand five hundred.	41 there were forty thousand and one thousand five hundred.
42 Of the people of Naphtali, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go forth to war:	42 Of the sons of Naphtali, by their generations and families, and the houses of their kinships, having been counted by the names of each one, from twenty years and above, of all who were able to go forth to war,
43 the number of the tribe of Naphtali was fifty-three thousand four hundred.	43 there were fifty-three thousand four hundred.
44 These are those who were numbered, whom Moses and Aaron numbered with the help of the leaders of Israel, twelve men, each representing his fathers' house.	44 These are the ones who were numbered by Moses and Aaron and the twelve leaders of Israel, each one by the houses of their kinships.
45 So the whole number of the people of Israel, by their fathers' houses, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go forth to war in Israel--	45 And the entire number of the sons of Israel by their houses and families, from twenty years and above, who were able to go forth to war, were
46 their whole number was six hundred and three thousand five hundred and fifty.	46 six hundred three thousand five hundred fifty men.
47 But the Levites were not numbered by their ancestral tribe along with them.	47 But the Levites in the tribes of their families were not numbered with them.
48 For the LORD said to Moses,	48 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
49 "Only the tribe of Levi you shall not number, and you shall not take a census of them among the people of Israel;	49 “Do not number the tribe of Levi, neither shall you take a total of them with the sons of Israel.
50 but appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony, and over all its furnishings, and over all that belongs to it; they are to carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings, and they shall tend it, and shall encamp around the tabernacle.	50 But appoint them over the tabernacle of the testimony, and all its vessels, and whatever pertains to the ceremonies. They shall carry the tabernacle and all its articles. And they shall be for the ministry, and they shall encamp all around the tabernacle.
51 When the tabernacle is to set out, the Levites shall take it down; and when the tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up. And if any one else comes near, he shall be put to death.	51 When you would depart, the Levites shall take down the tabernacle. When you are to make camp, they shall set it up. Any outsider who will approach it shall be killed.
52 The people of Israel shall pitch their tents by their companies, every man by his own camp and every man by his own standard;	52 Now the sons of Israel shall make camp, each one by his companies and bands, as well as his army.
53 but the Levites shall encamp around the tabernacle of the testimony, that there may be no wrath upon the congregation of the people of Israel; and the Levites shall keep charge of the tabernacle of the testimony."	53 Moreover, the Levites shall fix their tents all around the tabernacle, lest there be an indignation over the multitude of the sons of Israel. And they shall stand watch as guardians over the tabernacle of the testimony.”
54 Thus did the people of Israel; they did according to all that the LORD commanded Moses.	54 Therefore, the sons of Israel acted according to everything that the Lord had instructed Moses.
