Sirach 9

1 Do not be jealous of the wife of your bosom, and do not teach her an evil lesson to your own hurt.	1 Non esser geloso della donna del tuo seno, perch'ella non rivolga a tuo danno il cattivo insegnamento [che le dai].
2 Do not give yourself to a woman so that she gains mastery over your strength.	2 Non abbandonare in balia della donna l'anima tua, si ch'ella s'imponga alla tua forza, e tu resti svergognato.
3 Do not go to meet a loose woman, lest you fall into her snares.	3 Non gettar gli occhi su una donna pubblica, chè tu non abbia a cader ne' suoi lacci.
4 Do not associate with a woman singer, lest you be caught in her intrigues.	4 Non frequentar la ballerina, nè le dare ascolto, per non restar preso dalle sue arti.
5 Do not look intently at a virgin, lest you stumble and incur penalties for her.	5 Non riguardare una vergine, perchè tu non abbia a sdrucciolare a cagion della sua avvenenza.
6 Do not give yourself to harlots lest you lose your inheritance.	6 Non abbandonare alle sgualdrine l'anima tua, per non perder te stesso e il tuo patrimonio.
7 Do not look around in the streets of a city, nor wander about in its deserted sections.	7 Non guardar qua e là per le vie della città, nè andar vagando per le sue piazze.
8 Turn away your eyes from a shapely woman, and do not look intently at beauty belonging to another; many have been misled by a woman's beauty, and by it passion is kindled like a fire.	8 Ritrai lo sguardo dalla donna elegante, e non contemplare una bellezza straniera.
9 Never dine with another man's wife, nor revel with her at wine; lest your heart turn aside to her, and in blood you be plunged into destruction.	9 Per la bellezza d'una donna molti si perderono, e a cagion d'essa l'amore s'accende come fuoco.
10 Forsake not an old friend, for a new one does not compare with him. A new friend is like new wine; when it has aged you will drink it with pleasure.	10 Ogni donna che fa la bagascia, sarà calpestata come sterco per via.
11 Do not envy the honors of a sinner, for you do not know what his end will be.	11 Molti, presi d'ammirazione per la beltà di donna straniera, diventarono reprobi: la sua conversazione invero brucia come fuoco.
12 Do not delight in what pleases the ungodly; remember that they will not be held guiltless as long as they live.	12 Con la donna altrui non ti sedere affatto, nè adagiarti con lei a mensa,
13 Keep far from a man who has the power to kill, and you will not be worried by the fear of death. But if you approach him, make no misstep, lest he rob you of your life. Know that you are walking in the midst of snares, and that you are going about on the city battlements.	13 non gareggiar con essa nel vino; perchè il tuo cuore non si volga a lei, e per la tua passione tu non cada in rovina.
14 As much as you can, aim to know your neighbors, and consult with the wise.	14 Non abbandonare un vecchio amico, perchè il nuovo non sarà pari ad esso.
15 Let your conversation be with men of understanding, and let all your discussion be about the law of the Most High.	15 Un vino nuovo è l'amico nuovo; quando sarà invecchiato, lo berrai con delizia.
16 Let righteous men be your dinner companions, and let your glorying be in the fear of the Lord.	16 Non invidiare la gloria e le ricchezze del peccatore, perchè non sai quale sarà la sua catastrofe.
17 A work will be praised for the skill of the craftsmen; so a people's leader is proved wise by his words.	17 Non compiacerti della violenza degli ingiusti; ricorda che l'empio non piacerà sino alla tomba.
18 A babbler is feared in his city, and the man who is reckless in speech will be hated.	18 Sta' lontano da chi ha potere d'uccidere, e non sarai in ansietà per timore di morte.
	19 E se l'avvicini, guarda di non commetter qualche fallo, chè non t'abbia a toglier la vita.
	20 Sappi che la morte è prossima, perchè cammini in mezzo a lacci, e sulle armi di gente dolente passeggisi
	21 Per quanto puoi, sta' in guardia verso il tuo prossimo, e tratta con i savi e i prudenti.
	22 Persone dabbene siano i tuoi commensali, e nel timore del Signore stia il tuo vanto.
	23 Il pensiero di Dio sia nell'animo tuo, e ogni tuo discorso [si aggiri] sui comandamenti dell'Altissimo.
	24 Dall'abilità degli artisti han lode le opere e dalla sapienza del suo discorso il capo del popolo, e dall'assennatezza la parola de' vecchi.
	25 Terribile nella sua città è l'uomo linguacciuto, e chi è temerario nel parlare sarà odiato.
