Sirach 40

1 Much labor was created for every man, and a heavy yoke is upon the sons of Adam, from the day they come forth from their mother's womb till the day they return to the mother of all.	1 Gran travaglio è stato creato per tutti gli uomini, un giogo pesante opprime i figli d'Adamo dal giorno in cui escono dal seno della loro madre fino a che non sono sepolti nel seno della madre comune:
2 Their perplexities and fear of heart-- their anxious thought is the day of death,	2 sopraccapi, timori del cuore, preoccupazioni per l'avvenire e il giorno in cui si finisce.
3 from the man who sits on a splendid throne to the one who is humbled in dust and ashes,	3 Da chi siede sopra glorioso trono a chi giace sulla polvere e sul la cenere,
4 from the man who wears purple and a crown to the one who is clothed in burlap;	4 da chi veste di giacinto e porta corona a chi si ricopre di rozza tela di lino, furori, gelosie, tumulti, agitazioni, timori di morte, collere ostinate e contese.
5 there is anger and envy and trouble and unrest, and fear of death, and fury and strife. And when one rests upon his bed, his sleep at night confuses his mind.	5 Ed anche quando è tempo di riposare nel letto, il sonno della notte perturba l'imaginazione.
6 He gets little or no rest, and afterward in his sleep, as though he were on watch, he is troubled by the visions of his mind like one who has escaped from the battle-front;	6 Riposa poco o nulla, ed anche nel sonno è come nel giorno in cui è di sentinella.
7 at the moment of his rescue he wakes up, and wonders that his fear came to nothing.	7 E' turbato dalle visioni del suo spirito e, come chi fugge nel giorno della battaglia, si sveglia quando è in salvo, e si maraviglia del suo vano timore.
8 With all flesh, both man and beast, and upon sinners seven times more,	8 Così va per ogni vivente, dall'uomo alla bestia, e sette volte peggio per i peccatori.
9 are death and bloodshed and strife and sword, calamities, famine and affliction and plague.	9 S'aggiunga la morte, il sangue, le contese, la spada, le oppressioni, la fame, le rovine, i flagelli.
10 All these were created for the wicked, and on their account the flood came.	10 Tutte queste cose furon fatte contro gli iniqui, e per essi venne il diluvio.
11 All things that are from the earth turn back to the earth, and what is from the waters returns to the sea.	11 Tutto quello che vien dalla terra torna alla terra, come tutte le acque ritornano al mare.
12 All bribery and injustice will be blotted out, but good faith will stand for ever.	12 Ogni dono ed ogni ingiustizia perirà, ma la fedeltà sussisterà in eterno.
13 The wealth of the unjust will dry up like a torrent, and crash like a loud clap of thunder in a rain.	13 I beni degli empi seccheranno come torrente, faran fracasso come gran tuono durante la pioggia.
14 A generous man will be made glad; likewise transgressors will utterly fail.	14 Ci sarà gioia nell'aprir la mano, così i prevaricatori periranno per sempre.
15 The children of the ungodly will not put forth many branches; they are unhealthy roots upon sheer rock.	15 I rampolli degli empi non moltiplicheranno i loro rami, e le radici immonde fan rumore sulla cima d'un masso.
16 The reeds by any water or river bank will be plucked up before any grass.	16 Come erba verde lungo ogni acqua, e sul margine del fiume, è strappata avanti ogni altra erba.
17 Kindness is like a garden of blessings, and almsgiving endures for ever.	17 La benignità è come giardino benedetto, e la misericordia dura in eterno.
18 Life is sweet for the self-reliant and the worker, but he who finds treasure is better off than both.	18 La vita dell'operaio contento di sua sorte sarà dolce, e in essa troverai un tesoro.
19 Children and the building of a city establish a man's name, but a blameless wife is accounted better than both.	19 I figli e il fondare una città assicurano un nome, ma sarà stimata sopra queste cose una moglie senza macchia.
20 Wine and music gladden the heart, but the love of wisdom is better than both.	20 Il vino e la musica rallegrano il cuore, ma più di tutte e due l'amore della sapienza.
21 The flute and the harp make pleasant melody, but a pleasant voice is better than both.	21 Il flauto e l'arpa dànno soavi melodie, ma più melodiosa di loro è la lingua soave.
22 The eye desires grace and beauty, but the green shoots of grain more than both.	22 Il tuo occhio desidererà la grazia e la bellezza, ma più di queste cose i verdeggianti seminati.
23 A friend or a companion never meets one amiss, but a wife with her husband is better than both.	23 L'amico e il compagno nell'occasione sono di aiuto, ma supera l'uno e l'altro la moglie unita al marito.
24 Brothers and help are for a time of trouble, but almsgiving rescues better than both.	24 I fratelli vengono in soccorso nel tempo della sventura, ma più di loro salverà la misericordia.
25 Gold and silver make the foot stand sure, but good counsel is esteemed more than both.	25 L'oro e l'argento fanno star bene in piedi, ma più di tutti e due un buon consiglio.
26 Riches and strength lift up the heart, but the fear of the Lord is better than both. There is no loss in the fear of the Lord, and with it there is no need to seek for help.	26 La ricchezza e la forza esaltano il cuore, ma più di queste cose il timor di Dio.
27 The fear of the Lord is like a garden of blessing, and covers a man better than any glory.	27 Nel timor di Dio non manca nulla, e con esso non c'è bisogno di cercare aiuto.
28 My son, do not lead the life of a beggar; it is better to die than to beg.	28 Il timore del Signore è come giardino benedetto, or nato di magnificenza senza pari.
29 When a man looks to the table of another, his existence cannot be considered as life. He pollutes himself with another man's food, but a man who is intelligent and well instructed guards against that.	29 Figlio, nel tempo della tua vita non ti ridurre all'elemosina; meglio morire che mendicare.
30 In the mouth of the shameless begging is sweet, but in his stomach a fire is kindled.	30 L'uomo che guarda all'altrui mensa non impiega la sua vita a pensare al vitto e si nutrisce di viveri altrui.
	31 Ma l'uomo educa to e saggio si guarderà da questo.
	32 Alla bocca dello stolto sarà dolce il chiedere l'elemosina, ma nel ventre di lui arderà il fuoco.
