Sirach 30

Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition Biblia Sagrada
He who loves his son will whip him often, in order that he may rejoice at the way he turns out.1 El que ama a su hijo lo castiga sin cesar, | para poder alegrarse en el futuro.
He who disciplines his son will profit by him, and will boast of him among acquaintances.2 El que corrige a su hijo tendrá muchas satisfacciones, | y entre sus conocidos se sentirá orgulloso de él.
He who teaches his son will make his enemies envious, and will glory in him in the presence of friends.3 El que instruye a su hijo dará envidia a su enemigo, | y ante sus amigos se sentirá satisfecho.
The father may die, and yet he is not dead, for he has left behind him one like himself;4 Cuando el padre muere, es como si no muriese, | pues deja tras de sí un hijo semejante a él.
while alive he saw and rejoiced, and when he died he was not grieved;5 Durante su vida se alegra de verlo, | y a la hora de su muerte no siente tristeza.
he has left behind him an avenger against his enemies, and one to repay the kindness of his friends.6 Contra sus enemigos deja un vengador, | y para sus amigos un bienhechor.
He who spoils his son will bind up his wounds, and his feelings will be troubled at every cry.7 El que mima a su hijo, vendará sus heridas, | a cada grito se le conmoverán sus entrañas.
A horse that is untamed turns out to be stubborn, and a son unrestrained turns out to be wilful.8 Caballo no domado sale bravo, | hijo consentido sale arisco.
Pamper a child, and he will frighten you; play with him, and he will give you grief.9 Mima a tu hijo y te dará sorpresas, | juega con él y te traerá disgustos.
Do not laugh with him, lest you have sorrow with him, and in the end you will gnash your teeth.10 No rías con él y no llorarás con él, | ni acabarás rechinando los dientes.
Give him no authority in his youth, and do not ignore his errors.11 En su juventud no le des libertad, | ni pases por alto sus errores.
Bow down his neck in his youth, and beat his sides while he is young, lest he become stubborn and disobey you, and you have sorrow of soul from him.12 Doblega su cuello mientras es joven, | túndele las costillas cuando es pequeño, no sea que, volviéndose rebelde, te desobedezca | y sufras por él una honda amargura.
Discipline your son and take pains with him, that you may not be offended by his shamelessness.13 Educa a tu hijo y dedícate a él, | para que no tengas que soportar su insolencia.
Better off is a poor man who is well and strong in constitution than a rich man who is severely afflicted in body.14 Vale más pobre sano y fuerte | que rico lleno de achaques.
Health and soundness are better than all gold, and a robust body than countless riches.15 Salud y vigor valen más que todo el oro, | un cuerpo robusto más que una inmensa fortuna.
There is no wealth better than health of body, and there is no gladness above joy of heart.16 No hay mejor riqueza que la salud del cuerpo, | ni mayor felicidad que la alegría del corazón.
Death is better than a miserable life, and eternal rest than chronic sickness.17 Mejor es la muerte que una vida amargada, | el descanso eterno que una enfermedad incurable.
Good things poured out upon a mouth that is closed are like offerings of food placed upon a grave.18 Manjares derramados sobre boca cerrada | son las ofrendas depositadas sobre una tumba.
Of what use to an idol is an offering of fruit? For it can neither eat nor smell. So is he who is afflicted by the Lord;19 ¿De qué le sirve al ídolo una ofrenda?
Do not give yourself over to sorrow, and do not afflict yourself deliberately.21 No te abandones a la tristeza, | ni te atormentes con tus pensamientos.
Gladness of heart is the life of man, and the rejoicing of a man is length of days.22 La alegría de corazón es vida para el hombre, | y la felicidad le alarga los días.
Delight your soul and comfort your heart, and remove sorrow far from you, for sorrow has destroyed many, and there is no profit in it.23 Distrae tu alma y consuela tu corazón, | aparta de ti la tristeza; | pues la tristeza ha perdido a muchos, | y no se saca ningún provecho de ella.
Jealousy and anger shorten life, and anxiety brings on old age too soon.24 Envidia y malhumor acortan los días, | las preocupaciones producen vejez prematura.
A man of cheerful and good heart will give heed to the food he eats.25 Un corazón radiante tiene buen apetito | y le aprovecha todo lo que come.
