1 But all this I laid to heart, examining it all, how the righteous and the wise and their deeds are in the hand of God; whether it is love or hate man does not know. Everything before them is vanity,	1 He reflexionado sobre todo esto y he llegado a la siguiente conclusión: aunque los honrados y los sabios con sus obras están en manos de Dios, el hombre no sabe de amor ni de odio.
2 since one fate comes to all, to the righteous and the wicked, to the good and the evil, to the clean and the unclean, to him who sacrifices and him who does not sacrifice. As is the good man, so is the sinner; and he who swears is as he who shuns an oath.	2 Todo lo que tiene el hombre delante es vanidad, porque una misma suerte toca a todos: al inocente y al culpable, al puro y al impuro, al que ofrece sacrificios y al que no los ofrece, al honrado y al pecador, al que jura y al que tiene reparo en jurar.
3 This is an evil in all that is done under the sun, that one fate comes to all; also the hearts of men are full of evil, and madness is in their hearts while they live, and after that they go to the dead.	3 Y esta es la peor desgracia de cuanto sucede bajo el sol: que una misma suerte toca a todos. Por ello, el corazón de los hombres está lleno de maldad; mientras viven, piensan locuras, y después ¡a morir!
4 But he who is joined with all the living has hope, for a living dog is better than a dead lion.	4 Es cierto que mientras se está entre los vivos aún hay esperanza, pues «más vale perro vivo que león muerto».
5 For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing, and they have no more reward; but the memory of them is lost.	5 Los vivos saben que han de morir, pero los muertos no saben nada: no reciben recompensa alguna, incluso su nombre se desvanece.
6 Their love and their hate and their envy have already perished, and they have no more for ever any share in all that is done under the sun.	6 Ya se acabaron sus amores, odios y pasiones; jamás tomarán parte en lo que se hace bajo el sol.
7 Go, eat your bread with enjoyment, and drink your wine with a merry heart; for God has already approved what you do.	7 Anda, come tu pan con alegría y bebe contento tu vino, porque Dios ya ha aceptado tus obras.
8 Let your garments be always white; let not oil be lacking on your head.	8 Lleva siempre vestidos blancos, y no falte el perfume en tu cabeza;
9 Enjoy life with the wife whom you love, all the days of your vain life which he has given you under the sun, because that is your portion in life and in your toil at which you toil under the sun.	9 disfruta de la vida con la mujer que amas, mientras dure esta vana existencia que te ha sido concedida bajo el sol. Esa es tu parte en la vida y en los afanes con que te afanas bajo el sol.
10 Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or thought or knowledge or wisdom in Sheol, to which you are going.	10 Todo lo que esté a tu alcance, hazlo mientras puedas, pues no se trabaja ni se planea, no hay conocer ni saber en el Abismo adonde te encaminas.
11 Again I saw that under the sun the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the intelligent, nor favor to the men of skill; but time and chance happen to them all.	11 Otra cosa he observado bajo el sol: no gana la carrera el más ágil, ni la guerra el más fuerte, ni el pan quien es sabio; no consigue riqueza quien es avisado, ni éxito quien es inteligente, pues siempre se tercian ocasión y suerte.
12 For man does not know his time. Like fish which are taken in an evil net, and like birds which are caught in a snare, so the sons of men are snared at an evil time, when it suddenly falls upon them.	12 Además, el hombre desconoce su hora: como peces capturados en la red funesta, como pájaros apresados en la trampa, los hombres son cazados cuando un mal momento cae sobre ellos de improviso.
13 I have also seen this example of wisdom under the sun, and it seemed great to me.	13 También he observado bajo el sol un ejemplo de sabiduría aleccionador.
14 There was a little city with few men in it; and a great king came against it and besieged it, building great siegeworks against it.	14 Había una ciudad pequeña con pocos habitantes. Llegó un rey poderoso, le puso cerco y levantó frente a ella grandes artefactos de asedio.
15 But there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city. Yet no one remembered that poor man.	15 Había en la ciudad un hombre pobre, pero sabio, que había salvado a la ciudad con su sabiduría. Pero nadie se volvió a acordar de aquel hombre pobre.
16 But I say that wisdom is better than might, though the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heeded.	16 Entonces me digo: sí, más vale sabiduría que fuerza; pero la sabiduría del pobre fue despreciada, y sus palabras, desoídas.
17 The words of the wise heard in quiet are better than the shouting of a ruler among fools.	17 Sin embargo, mejor se escuchan las palabras sosegadas de los sabios que los gritos de un capitán de necios.
18 Wisdom is better than weapons of war, but one sinner destroys much good.	18 Más vale sabiduría que instrumentos de guerra; pero uno solo que falle echa a perder muchos bienes.
