Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition NEW JERUSALEM
A Song of Ascents. To thee I lift up my eyes, O thou who art enthroned in the heavens!1 [Song of Ascents] I lift up my eyes to you who are enthroned in heaven.
Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the LORD our God, till he have mercy upon us.2 Just as the eyes of slaves are on their masters' hand, or the eyes of a slave-girl on the hand of hermistress, so our eyes are on Yahweh our God, for him to take pity on us.
Have mercy upon us, O LORD, have mercy upon us, for we have had more than enough of contempt.3 Have pity on us, Yahweh, have pity, for we have had our full share of scorn,
Too long our soul has been sated with the scorn of those who are at ease, the contempt of the proud.4 more than our share of jeers from the complacent. (Scorn is for the proud.)
