¹ Then Job answered:	¹ - Ma Giobbe rispose e disse:
² "Listen carefully to my words, and let this be your consolation.	² «Ascoltate, vi prego, le mie parole, e cambiate opinione.
³ Bear with me, and I will speak, and after I have spoken, mock on.	³ Tolleratemi ed io parlerò, e dopo le mie parole, se vi pare, ridete pure.
⁴ As for me, is my complaint against man? Why should I not be impatient?	⁴ Sto io forse a disputar contro un uomo, sì che io non abbia motivo d'attristarmi?
⁵ Look at me, and be appalled, and lay your hand upon your mouth.	⁵ Volgetevi a me e inorridite, e mettetevi un dito sulla bocca:
⁶ When I think of it I am dismayed, and shuddering seizes my flesh.	⁶ pur io, se vi ripenso, allibisco, e un tremore scuote le mie carni.
⁷ Why do the wicked live, reach old age, and grow mighty in power?	⁷ Perchè dunque gli empii vivono, s'innalzano e hanno grandi ricchezze?
⁸ Their children are established in their presence, and their offspring before their eyes.	⁸ La loro stirpe persiste innanzi a loro, e una turba di parenti e nepoti sta al loro cospetto;
⁹ Their houses are safe from fear, and no rod of God is upon them.	⁹ le loro case sono tranquille e in pace, nè la verga di Dio cade su loro;
¹⁰ Their bull breeds without fail; their cow calves, and does not cast her calf.	¹⁰ il loro bove va alla monta e non rifiuta, la vacca partorisce senza disperdere il feto.
¹¹ They send forth their little ones like a flock, and their children dance.	¹¹ Se non vanno qual gregge i loro ragazzi, e i loro fanciulli saltellano scherzando.
¹² They sing to the tambourine and the lyre, and rejoice to the sound of the pipe.	¹² Suonano il timpano e la cetra, e fanno festa al suono del flauto.
¹³ They spend their days in prosperity, and in peace they go down to Sheol.	¹³ Consumano nella felicità i loro giorni, quindi in pace discendono agli ìnferi.
¹⁴ They say to God, 'Depart from us! We do not desire the knowledge of thy ways.	¹⁴ Esclamarono essi verso Dio: - Va' lungi da noi; la dottrina dei tuoi precetti noi non gradiamo.
¹⁵ What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? And what profit do we get if we pray to him?'	¹⁵ Chi è mai l'Onnipotente, che lo dobbiamo servire, e in che ci gioverebbe se lo pregassimo? -
¹⁶ Behold, is not their prosperity in their hand? The counsel of the wicked is far from me.	¹⁶ Tuttavia, poichè essi non son padroni dei loro beni, il consiglio degli empii sia lungi da me!
¹⁷ "How often is it that the lamp of the wicked is put out? That their calamity comes upon them? That God distributes pains in his anger?	¹⁷ Quante volte la lucerna degli empii si spegne, e li raggiunge l'inondazione [di tutti i mali], assegnando [Dio] i castighi dell'ira sua?
¹⁸ That they are like straw before the wind, and like chaff that the storm carries away?	¹⁸ Dovrebbero essere come paglia al vento, e come pula dispersa dal turbine.
¹⁹ You say, 'God stores up their iniquity for their sons.' Let him recompense it to themselves, that they may know it.	¹⁹ Dio riserba ai figli il castigo del padre: ma ripaghi lui stesso, e allora imparerà!
²⁰ Let their own eyes see their destruction, and let them drink of the wrath of the Almighty.	²⁰ vedano i suoi occhi il proprio sterminio, e del furore dell'Onnipotente egli beva!
²¹ For what do they care for their houses after them, when the number of their months is cut off?	²¹ Giacchè che importa a lui di quei di casa sua dopo di sè, quando il numero dei suoi mesi [di vita], è compiuto?
²² Will any teach God knowledge, seeing that he judges those that are on high?	²² Insegnerà forse qualcuno la sapienza a Dioche giudica gli eccelsi?
²³ One dies in full prosperity, being wholly at ease and secure,	²³ Questo muore robusto e sano, ricco e pur felice,
²⁴ his body full of fat and the marrow of his bones moist.	²⁴ il suo corpo è tutto pinguedine, e le sue ossa son grasse di midollo:
²⁵ Another dies in bitterness of soul, never having tasted of good.	²⁵ Quest'altro muore nell'amarezza d'animo, senza nessun bene;
²⁶ They lie down alike in the dust, and the worms cover them.	²⁶ tuttavia insieme nella polvere giacciono, e li ricoprono i vermini.
²⁷ "Behold, I know your thoughts, and your schemes to wrong me.	²⁷ Io ben conosco i vostri pensierie le vostre inique sentenze contro di me;
²⁸ For you say, 'Where is the house of the prince? Where is the tent in which the wicked dwelt?'	²⁸ voi infatti dite: - Ov'è mai la casa del tiranno? e ove son mai le abitazioni degli empii? -
²⁹ Have you not asked those who travel the roads, and do you not accept their testimony	²⁹ Ebbene, interrogate un viaggiatore qualunque, e vi convincerete ch'egli la pensa nel modo seguente:
³⁰ that the wicked man is spared in the day of calamity, that he is rescued in the day of wrath?	³⁰ Pel giorno di rovina il malvagio è risparmiato, e fino al giorno d'ira egli sarà tollerato.
³¹ Who declares his way to his face, and who requites him for what he has done?	³¹ Chi gli rinfaccia apertamente la sua condotta? e ciò ch'ei commise, chi glielo ripaga?
³² When he is borne to the grave, watch is kept over his tomb.	³² Eppure alle sepolture [onorevoli] egli viene portato, e sul tumulo de' morti c'è chi fa la guardia.
³³ The clods of the valley are sweet to him; all men follow after him, and those who go before him are innumerable.	³³ Dolci sono a lui le zolle della valle [funerea]; ed egli trascina dietro a sè ogni uomo, come già prima di sè altri innumerevoli.
³⁴ How then will you comfort me with empty nothings? There is nothing left of your answers but falsehood."	³⁴ Come dunque mi consolerete con vane [ragioni], se la vostra risposta chiaramente ripugna alla verità?»
