1 Then Job answered:	1 - Ma Giobbe rispose e disse:
2 "Listen carefully to my words, and let this be your consolation.	2 «Ascoltate, vi prego, le mie parole, e cambiate opinione.
3 Bear with me, and I will speak, and after I have spoken, mock on.	3 Tolleratemi ed io parlerò, e dopo le mie parole, se vi pare, ridete pure.
4 As for me, is my complaint against man? Why should I not be impatient?	4 Sto io forse a disputar contro un uomo, sì che io non abbia motivo d'attristarmi?
5 Look at me, and be appalled, and lay your hand upon your mouth.	5 Volgetevi a me e inorridite, e mettetevi un dito sulla bocca:
6 When I think of it I am dismayed, and shuddering seizes my flesh.	6 pur io, se vi ripenso, allibisco, e un tremore scuote le mie carni.
7 Why do the wicked live, reach old age, and grow mighty in power?	7 Perchè dunque gli empii vivono, s'innalzano e hanno grandi ricchezze?
8 Their children are established in their presence, and their offspring before their eyes.	8 La loro stirpe persiste innanzi a loro, e una turba di parenti e nepoti sta al loro cospetto;
9 Their houses are safe from fear, and no rod of God is upon them.	9 le loro case sono tranquille e in pace, nè la verga di Dio cade su loro;
10 Their bull breeds without fail; their cow calves, and does not cast her calf.	10 il loro bove va alla monta e non rifiuta, la vacca partorisce senza disperdere il feto.
11 They send forth their little ones like a flock, and their children dance.	11 Se non vanno qual gregge i loro ragazzi, e i loro fanciulli saltellano scherzando.
12 They sing to the tambourine and the lyre, and rejoice to the sound of the pipe.	12 Suonano il timpano e la cetra, e fanno festa al suono del flauto.
13 They spend their days in prosperity, and in peace they go down to Sheol.	13 Consumano nella felicità i loro giorni, quindi in pace discendono agli ìnferi.
14 They say to God, 'Depart from us! We do not desire the knowledge of thy ways.	14 Esclamarono essi verso Dio: - Va' lungi da noi; la dottrina dei tuoi precetti noi non gradiamo.
15 What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? And what profit do we get if we pray to him?'	15 Chi è mai l'Onnipotente, che lo dobbiamo servire, e in che ci gioverebbe se lo pregassimo? -
16 Behold, is not their prosperity in their hand? The counsel of the wicked is far from me.	16 Tuttavia, poichè essi non son padroni dei loro beni, il consiglio degli empii sia lungi da me!
17 "How often is it that the lamp of the wicked is put out? That their calamity comes upon them? That God distributes pains in his anger?	17 Quante volte la lucerna degli empii si spegne, e li raggiunge l'inondazione [di tutti i mali], assegnando [Dio] i castighi dell'ira sua?
18 That they are like straw before the wind, and like chaff that the storm carries away?	18 Dovrebbero essere come paglia al vento, e come pula dispersa dal turbine.
19 You say, 'God stores up their iniquity for their sons.' Let him recompense it to themselves, that they may know it.	19 Dio riserba ai figli il castigo del padre: ma ripaghi lui stesso, e allora imparerà!
20 Let their own eyes see their destruction, and let them drink of the wrath of the Almighty.	20 vedano i suoi occhi il proprio sterminio, e del furore dell'Onnipotente egli beva!
21 For what do they care for their houses after them, when the number of their months is cut off?	21 Giacchè che importa a lui di quei di casa sua dopo di sè, quando il numero dei suoi mesi [di vita], è compiuto?
22 Will any teach God knowledge, seeing that he judges those that are on high?	22 Insegnerà forse qualcuno la sapienza a Dioche giudica gli eccelsi?
23 One dies in full prosperity, being wholly at ease and secure,	23 Questo muore robusto e sano, ricco e pur felice,
24 his body full of fat and the marrow of his bones moist.	24 il suo corpo è tutto pinguedine, e le sue ossa son grasse di midollo:
25 Another dies in bitterness of soul, never having tasted of good.	25 Quest'altro muore nell'amarezza d'animo, senza nessun bene;
26 They lie down alike in the dust, and the worms cover them.	26 tuttavia insieme nella polvere giacciono, e li ricoprono i vermini.
27 "Behold, I know your thoughts, and your schemes to wrong me.	27 Io ben conosco i vostri pensierie le vostre inique sentenze contro di me;
28 For you say, 'Where is the house of the prince? Where is the tent in which the wicked dwelt?'	28 voi infatti dite: - Ov'è mai la casa del tiranno? e ove son mai le abitazioni degli empii? -
29 Have you not asked those who travel the roads, and do you not accept their testimony	29 Ebbene, interrogate un viaggiatore qualunque, e vi convincerete ch'egli la pensa nel modo seguente:
30 that the wicked man is spared in the day of calamity, that he is rescued in the day of wrath?	30 Pel giorno di rovina il malvagio è risparmiato, e fino al giorno d'ira egli sarà tollerato.
31 Who declares his way to his face, and who requites him for what he has done?	31 Chi gli rinfaccia apertamente la sua condotta? e ciò ch'ei commise, chi glielo ripaga?
32 When he is borne to the grave, watch is kept over his tomb.	32 Eppure alle sepolture [onorevoli] egli viene portato, e sul tumulo de' morti c'è chi fa la guardia.
33 The clods of the valley are sweet to him; all men follow after him, and those who go before him are innumerable.	33 Dolci sono a lui le zolle della valle [funerea]; ed egli trascina dietro a sè ogni uomo, come già prima di sè altri innumerevoli.
34 How then will you comfort me with empty nothings? There is nothing left of your answers but falsehood."	34 Come dunque mi consolerete con vane [ragioni], se la vostra risposta chiaramente ripugna alla verità?»
