¹ Then Job answered:	¹ Rispose Iob, e disse:
² "Listen carefully to my words, and let this be your consolation.	² Io v' addomando che voi udiate li miei sermoni, e facciate penitenza.
³ Bear with me, and I will speak, and after I have spoken, mock on.	³ Sostenete me, acciò ch' io favelli; e dopo le mie parole, se vi parerà, ridete.
⁴ As for me, is my complaint against man? Why should I not be impatient?	⁴ Or (non) è contro all' uomo la mia disputazione, acciò che per merito non mi debba contristare?
⁵ Look at me, and be appalled, and lay your hand upon your mouth.	⁵ Attendete a me, e maravigliatevi, e ponete lo dito sopra la bocca vostra.
⁶ When I think of it I am dismayed, and shuddering seizes my flesh.	⁶ E io, quando me ne ricorderò, comincio a temere, e percuote lo tremore la mia carne.
⁷ Why do the wicked live, reach old age, and grow mighty in power?	⁷ Adunque perchè vivono i malvagi, sollevati sono e confortati colle ricchezze?
⁸ Their children are established in their presence, and their offspring before their eyes.	⁸ Lo seme loro permane innanzi a loro; la turba de' propinqui e de' nepoti (loro) nel cospetto loro sono.
⁹ Their houses are safe from fear, and no rod of God is upon them.	⁹ Le case loro sono sicure e umiliate, e non è la verga di Dio sopra loro.
¹⁰ Their bull breeds without fail; their cow calves, and does not cast her calf.	¹⁰ Lo bue loro concepette, e non disperse; la vacca partorì, e non è privata del suo parto.
¹¹ They send forth their little ones like a flock, and their children dance.	¹¹ Vanno, sì come le gregge, li loro figliuoli; e li fanciulli loro si rallegrano con le lusinghe.
¹² They sing to the tambourine and the lyre, and rejoice to the sound of the pipe.	¹² Tengono lo timpano e le chitarre, e rallegransi allo suono degli organi.
¹³ They spend their days in prosperity, and in peace they go down to Sheol.	¹³ Menano in bene li loro dì, e in uno punto all' inferno discendono,
¹⁴ They say to God, 'Depart from us! We do not desire the knowledge of thy ways.	¹⁴ coloro che dicono a Dio: pàrtiti da noi, e la scienza delle tue vie non vogliamo.
¹⁵ What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? And what profit do we get if we pray to him?'	¹⁵ Chi è lo Onnipotente, che serviamo a lui? Che fa prode a noi, se oreremo a lui?
¹⁶ Behold, is not their prosperity in their hand? The counsel of the wicked is far from me.	¹⁶ Ma pertanto, perciò che non sono nelle sue mani li suoi beni, lo consiglio de' malvagi sia dalla lunga da me.
¹⁷ "How often is it that the lamp of the wicked is put out? That their calamity comes upon them? That God distributes pains in his anger?	¹⁷ Quante volte la lucerna delli malvagi sarae spenta, e la inondazione sopraverrae a loro, e li dolori divideranno li loro furori?
¹⁸ That they are like straw before the wind, and like chaff that the storm carries away?	¹⁸ Saranno sì come paglia dinanzi alla faccia del vento, e sì come favilla la qual il vento sparge..
¹⁹ You say, 'God stores up their iniquity for their sons.' Let him recompense it to themselves, that they may know it.	¹⁹ Iddio serba alli loro figliuoli lo dolore del padre; e quando ritornerà, allora lo saperà.
²⁰ Let their own eyes see their destruction, and let them drink of the wrath of the Almighty.	²⁰ Vedranno gli occhii suoi la uccisione sua, e del furore dell' Onnipotente berà.
²¹ For what do they care for their houses after them, when the number of their months is cut off?	²¹ Che adunque a lui s' appartiene della casa sua dopo sè? e se lo numero delli mesi suoi sarà ammezzato?
²² Will any teach God knowledge, seeing that he judges those that are on high?	²² Or saravvi alcuno che vogli ammaestrare Iddio in scienza, il quale giudica le creature superiori?
²³ One dies in full prosperity, being wholly at ease and secure,	²³ Questo muore robusto e sano, ricco e bene avventurato.
²⁴ his body full of fat and the marrow of his bones moist.	²⁴ Le budella sue sono piene di grasso, e l'ossa sue sono bagnate delle midolla.
²⁵ Another dies in bitterness of soul, never having tasted of good.	²⁵ Ma l'altro muore nella amaritudine dell' anima sua senza quelle dolcezze.
²⁶ They lie down alike in the dust, and the worms cover them.	²⁶ E pure insieme nella polvere dormiranno,
²⁷ "Behold, I know your thoughts, and your schemes to wrong me.	²⁷ Certo io hoe conosciuto li vostri pensieri, e le sentenze contro a me malvagie.
²⁸ For you say, 'Where is the house of the prince? Where is the tent in which the wicked dwelt?'	²⁸ E certo voi dite: dov'è la casa del principe? e dove sono li tabernacoli delli malvagi?
²⁹ Have you not asked those who travel the roads, and do you not accept their testimony	²⁹ Addomandate ciascuno delli viandanti, questa medesima cosa intenderete lui conoscere.
³⁰ that the wicked man is spared in the day of calamity, that he is rescued in the day of wrath?	³⁰ Perciò che nel dì della perdizione sarae servato lo rio, e al di del furore sarae menato.
³¹ Who declares his way to his face, and who requites him for what he has done?	³¹ Chi reprenderà dinanzi a lui la sua via? e chi renderae (dinanzi) a lui quello ch' elli fece?
³² When he is borne to the grave, watch is kept over his tomb.	³² Alli sepolcri sarae menato, e nella dannazione delli morti vegghierae.
³³ The clods of the valley are sweet to him; all men follow after him, and those who go before him are innumerable.	³³ Dolce fue la giara del fiume infernale, e dopo sè ogni uomo trarrae, e innanzi a sè senza numero.
³⁴ How then will you comfort me with empty nothings? There is nothing left of your answers but falsehood."	³⁴ Come adunque consolate me indarno, conciosia cosa che sia dimostrato che la vostra risposta contrasta alla veritade?
