1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered:	1 Allora riprese la parola Elifaz di Teman, e disse:
2 "Should a wise man answer with windy knowledge, and fill himself with the east wind?	2 « Il sapiente risponderà forse con vuote ragioni ed empirà di (vento) caldo il suo petto?
3 Should he argue in unprofitable talk, or in words with which he can do no good?	3 Tu rimproveri colle tue parole chi non è tuo eguale, e dici cose a te sconvenienti.
4 But you are doing away with the fear of God, and hindering meditation before God.	4 Per quanto è in te hai cacciato il timor (di Dio) ed hai tolte dal cospetto di Dio le preghiere.
5 For your iniquity teaches your mouth, and you choose the tongue of the crafty.	5 L'iniquità ha ammaestrata la tua lingua, e tu imiti il linguaggio dei bestemmiatori.
6 Your own mouth condemns you, and not I; your own lips testify against you.	6 Ti condanna la tua bocca, non io; il tuo labbro depone contro di te.
7 "Are you the first man that was born? Or were you brought forth before the hills?	7 Sei tu forse il primo uomo che sia nato, e fosti formato prima dei colli?
8 Have you listened in the council of God? And do you limit wisdom to yourself?	8 Ascoltasti forse il consiglio di Dio, e sarà inferiore a te la sua sapienza?
9 What do you know that we do not know? What do you understand that is not clear to us?	9 Che cosa sai tu che noi non sappiamo? Quale cognizione hai tu a noi ignota?
10 Both the gray-haired and the aged are among us, older than your father.	10 Ci son tra noi dei vecchi, dei canuti molto più avanzati in età di tuo padre.
11 Are the consolations of God too small for you, or the word that deals gently with you?	11 E' forse gran cosa che Dio ti consoli? Ma le tue cattive parole lo impediscono.
12 Why does your heart carry you away, and why do your eyes flash,	12 Perchè ti fa insuperbire il tuo cuore, ed hai gli occhi altezzosi come se pensassi a grandi cose?
13 that you turn your spirit against God, and let such words go out of your mouth?	13 Perchè il tuo spirito se la prende contro Dio, e ti lasci uscir di bocca tali parole?
14 What is man, that he can be clean? Or he that is born of a woman, that he can be righteous?	14 Che è mai l'uomo per essere puro, e il figlio della donna per apparir giusto?
15 Behold, God puts no trust in his holy ones, and the heavens are not clean in his sight;	15 Ecco, tra i suoi santi nessuno è immutabile, e i cieli non son puri al suo cospetto.
16 how much less one who is abominable and corrupt, a man who drinks iniquity like water!	16 Quanto più sarà abbominevole e inutile l'uomo, che beve l'iniquità come l'acqua?
17 "I will show you, hear me; and what I have seen I will declare	17 Ascoltami, e te lo farò vedere, ti racconterò quello che ho veduto,
18 (what wise men have told, and their fathers have not hidden,	18 quello che dicono i saggi non dimentichi dei loro padri.
19 to whom alone the land was given, and no stranger passed among them).	19 Essi soli possedevano questa terra, e lo straniero non era passato in mezzo a loro,
20 The wicked man writhes in pain all his days, through all the years that are laid up for the ruthless.	20 per tutta la sua vita l'empio insuperbisce, e il numero degli anni della sua tirannide è incerto.
21 Terrifying sounds are in his ears; in prosperity the destroyer will come upon him.	21 Egli ha sempre nell'orecchio rumori spaventosi, e in piena pace sospetta sempre insidie.
22 He does not believe that he will return out of darkness, and he is destined for the sword.	22 Non spera di poter tornare dalle tenebre alla luce, vedendo spade da tutte le parti.
23 He wanders abroad for bread, saying, 'Where is it?' He knows that a day of darkness is ready at his hand;	23 Quando si muove per cercar pane, sa che già gli sovrasta il giorno tenebroso.
24 distress and anguish terrify him; they prevail against him, like a king prepared for battle.	24 La sventura lo spaventa, l'angoscia l'assale, come re che si prepara alla battaglia;
25 Because he has stretched forth his hand against God, and bids defiance to the Almighty,	25 perchè stese la sua mano contro Dio, sfidò l'Onnipotente;
26 running stubbornly against him with a thick-bossed shield;	26 corse contro di lui a testa alta, armato di pingue cervice;
27 because he has covered his face with his fat, and gathered fat upon his loins,	27 colla faccia coperta di grasso, coll'adipe pendente dai suoi fianchi.
28 and has lived in desolate cities, in houses which no man should inhabit, which were destined to become heaps of ruins;	28 Abitò città desolate, case deserte, divenute mucchi di rovine.
29 he will not be rich, and his wealth will not endure, nor will he strike root in the earth;	29 Non arricchirà, non durerà la sua fortuna, non metterà radici sulla terra.
30 he will not escape from darkness; the flame will dry up his shoots, and his blossom will be swept away by the wind.	30 Non potrà uscire dalle tenebre; una fiamma divorerà suoi rampolli, e sarà portato via dal soffio della sua bocca.
31 Let him not trust in emptiness, deceiving himself; for emptiness will be his recompense.	31 Nè potrà credere, ingannato da vano errore, di poter essere riscattato con danaro:
32 It will be paid in full before his time, and his branch will not be green.	32 egli perirà avanti che sian compiti i suoi giorni, e le sue mani seccheranno.
33 He will shake off his unripe grape, like the vine, and cast off his blossom, like the olive tree.	33 Il suo grappolo sarà colpito, come la vigna, nel primo fiore, e come olivo che lascia cadere il suo fiore;
34 For the company of the godless is barren, and fire consumes the tents of bribery.	34 chè sterile sarà la famiglia dell'ipocrita, e il fuoco divorerà le tende di coloro che accettano volentieri doni.
35 They conceive mischief and bring forth evil and their heart prepares deceit."	35 Concepì il male, partorì l'iniquità; e il suo seno prepara inganni ».
