1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered:	1 A Eliphaz di Theman rispose, e disse:
2 "Should a wise man answer with windy knowledge, and fill himself with the east wind?	2 Un uomo saggio risponderebbe egli forse parlando in aria, e accenderebbe di calore il suo petto?
3 Should he argue in unprofitable talk, or in words with which he can do no good?	3 Tu colle tue parole fai de' rimproveri a lui, che non è un tuo eguale, e parli in guisa, che non gioverà a te.
4 But you are doing away with the fear of God, and hindering meditation before God.	4 Quant'è in te, tu hai discacciato il timore (di Dio), ed hai tolta via l'orazione, che si fa a Dio.
5 For your iniquity teaches your mouth, and you choose the tongue of the crafty.	5 Perocché maestra della tua lingua è statà la tua iniquità, e tu vai imitamdo il linguaggio de' bestemmiatori.
6 Your own mouth condemns you, and not I; your own lips testify against you.	6 Ti condannerà la tua bocca, e non io, e risponderanno a te le tue labbra.
7 "Are you the first man that was born? Or were you brought forth before the hills?	7 Se' tu forse il primo uomo che nascesse, e se' tu stato formato prima de monti?
8 Have you listened in the council of God? And do you limit wisdom to yourself?	8 Se' tu forse stato ad udire i consiglj di Dio, e la sapienza di lui sarà ella inferiore a te?
9 What do you know that we do not know? What do you understand that is not clear to us?	9 Sai tu qualche cosa ignota a noi? Hai tu qualche sapere, che noi non abbiamo?
10 Both the gray-haired and the aged are among us, older than your father.	10 Sono de' vecchi, e degli anziani tra noi molto più avanzati in età che i padri tuoi.
11 Are the consolations of God too small for you, or the word that deals gently with you?	11 Sarebbe ella cosa difficile a Dio il consolarti? Ma ciò impediscono le tue cattive parole.
12 Why does your heart carry you away, and why do your eyes flash,	12 Perché ti leva in alto il cuor tuo, qual uomo che sta in grandi pensieri gli occhi porti smarriti?
13 that you turn your spirit against God, and let such words go out of your mouth?	13 Perché mai il tuo spirito si inalbera contro Dio sino a proferire colla tua bocca sì fatte parole?
14 What is man, that he can be clean? Or he that is born of a woman, that he can be righteous?	14 Che è l'uomo onde possa essere senza macchia, e giusto apparisca un che nacque di donna?
15 Behold, God puts no trust in his holy ones, and the heavens are not clean in his sight;	15 Mira come tra' santi di lui nissuno è immutabile, e i cieli negli occhi di lui non son puri.
16 how much less one who is abominable and corrupt, a man who drinks iniquity like water!	16 Quanto meno un uom feccioso, e abbominevole, che beve com'acqua l'iniquità?
17 "I will show you, hear me; and what I have seen I will declare	17 Io ti convincerò, ascoltami: racconterò a te quello, che io ho veduto.
18 (what wise men have told, and their fathers have not hidden,	18 I saggi parlano, e non tengono ascosi gli insegnamenti de' padri loro.
19 to whom alone the land was given, and no stranger passed among them).	19 A' quali soli data fu questa terra, e mai gli stranieri non passarono tra di loro.
20 The wicked man writhes in pain all his days, through all the years that are laid up for the ruthless.	20 L'empio si consuma di affanni in tutti i suoi giorni, perché è incerto quanti saranno gli anni di sua tirannide.
21 Terrifying sounds are in his ears; in prosperity the destroyer will come upon him.	21 Egli ha mai sempre nell'orecchie uno strepito che atterrisce, e in mezzo alla pace sospetta di tradimento.
22 He does not believe that he will return out of darkness, and he is destined for the sword.	22 Nel buio non crede di tornar a ve derla luce, veggendo spade da tutti i lati.
23 He wanders abroad for bread, saying, 'Where is it?' He knows that a day of darkness is ready at his hand;	23 S'ei si muove per andar a cercar del pane, egli pensa, che il nero giorno imminente gli sta dappresso.
24 distress and anguish terrify him; they prevail against him, like a king prepared for battle.	24 La tribolazione lo atterrisce, e lo ircondano gli affanni, come un re, che si mette in punto per la battaglia.
25 Because he has stretched forth his hand against God, and bids defiance to the Almighty,	25 Perocché egli sua mano stese contro Dio, e si indurò contro l'Onnipotente.
26 running stubbornly against him with a thick-bossed shield;	26 Contro a lui corse a collo interato, e si armò della sua grossa testa.
27 because he has covered his face with his fat, and gathered fat upon his loins,	27 Egli ha la faccia coperta di grasso, e da' fianchi di lui pende il lardo.
28 and has lived in desolate cities, in houses which no man should inhabit, which were destined to become heaps of ruins;	28 Si è ridotto ad abitare in città desolate, e in case deserte divenute tanti mucchi di sassi.
29 he will not be rich, and his wealth will not endure, nor will he strike root in the earth;	29 Egli non sarà sempre ricco, e i suoi beni non dureranno, e non metterà radici nella terra.
30 he will not escape from darkness; the flame will dry up his shoots, and his blossom will be swept away by the wind.	30 Ei sarà sempre in tenebre, i suoi rami saranno arsi dal fuoco, ed esalando il fiato della sua bocca sparirà.
31 Let him not trust in emptiness, deceiving himself; for emptiness will be his recompense.	31 Né da vano errore sedotto crederà di poter essere riscattato a qual si sia prezzo.
32 It will be paid in full before his time, and his branch will not be green.	32 Prima che i giorni di lui giungano al loro termine ei perirà, e seccheranno le sue mani.
33 He will shake off his unripe grape, like the vine, and cast off his blossom, like the olive tree.	33 Sarà di lui come di una vite, di cui sono guaste le uve nel primo fiorire, e come un ulivo, del quale i mignoli cadano a terra.
34 For the company of the godless is barren, and fire consumes the tents of bribery.	34 Perocché steril sarà la progenie dell'empio, e il fuoco divorerà i padiglioni di coloro, che volentieri accettano i doni.
35 They conceive mischief and bring forth evil and their heart prepares deceit."	35 Concepisce dolori, e partorisce l'iniquità, e il seno di lui è gravido di fraudi.
