1 Maccabees 9

1 When Demetrius heard that Nicanor and his army had fallen in battle, he sent Bacchides and Alcimus into the land of Judah a second time, and with them the right wing of the army.	1 Cependant Démétrius, ayant appris que Nikanor avait succombé avec son armée dans lecombat, envoya de nouveau au pays de Juda Bacchidès et Alkime, à la tête de l'aile droite.
2 They went by the road which leads to Gilgal and encamped against Mesaloth in Arbela, and they took it and killed many people.	2 Ceux-ci prirent le chemin de la Galilée et assiégèrent Mésaloth au territoire d'Arbèles et, s'enétant emparés, ils y tuèrent un grand nombre d'habitants.
3 In the first month of the one hundred and fifty-second year * they encamped against Jerusalem;	3 Le premier mois de l'année 152, ils dressèrent leur camp devant Jérusalem,
4 then they marched off and went to Berea with twenty thousand foot soldiers and two thousand cavalry.	4 puis ils partirent et allèrent à Béerzeth avec 20.000 fantassins et 2.000 cavaliers.
5 Now Judas was encamped in Elasa, and with him were three thousand picked men.	5 Judas avait établi son camp à Eléasa, ayant avec lui 3.000 guerriers d'élite.
6 When they saw the huge number of the enemy forces, they were greatly frightened, and many slipped away from the camp, until no more than eight hundred of them were left.	6 A la vue du grand nombre des ennemis, ils furent pris de frayeur et beaucoup s'échappèrentdu camp, où il ne resta plus que 800 hommes.
7 When Judas saw that his army had slipped away and the battle was imminent, he was crushed in spirit, for he had no time to assemble them.	7 Judas vit que son armée s'était dérobée alors que le combat le pressait; son coeur en fut briséparce qu'il n'avait plus le temps de rassembler les siens.
8 He became faint, but he said to those who were left, "Let us rise and go up against our enemies. We may be able to fight them."	8 Dans son désarroi, il dit cependant à ceux qui étaient restés: "Debout! marchons contre nosadversaires si par hasard nous pouvons les combattre."
9 But they tried to dissuade him, saying, "We are not able. Let us rather save our own lives now, and let us come back with our brethren and fight them; we are too few."	9 Eux l'en dissuadaient: "Nous ne pouvons, disaient-ils, rien d'autre pour le moment que sauvernotre vie, quitte à revenir avec nos frères pour reprendre la lutte. Nous sommes vraiment trop peu."
10 But Judas said, "Far be it from us to do such a thing as to flee from them. If our time has come, let us die bravely for our brethren, and leave no cause to question our honor."	10 Judas répliqua: "Loin de moi d'agir ainsi et de fuir devant eux. Si notre heure est arrivée,mourons bravement pour nos frères et ne laissons rien à reprendre à notre gloire."
11 Then the army of Bacchides * marched out from the camp and took its stand for the encounter. The cavalry was divided into two companies, and the slingers and the archers went ahead of the army, as did all the chief warriors.	11 L'armée sortit du camp et s'arrêta face à l'ennemi. La cavalerie fut partagée en deuxescadrons, les frondeurs et les archers marchaient sur le front de l'armée ainsi que les troupes de choc, tous lesvaillants.
12 Bacchides was on the right wing. Flanked by the two companies, the phalanx advanced to the sound of the trumpets; and the men with Judas also blew their trumpets.	12 Bacchidès se tenait à l'aile droite, la phalange s'avança des deux côtés au son de latrompette. Ceux du côté de Judas sonnèrent aussi la trompette
13 The earth was shaken by the noise of the armies, and the battle raged from morning till evening.	13 et la terre fut ébranlée par la clameur des armées. Le combat s'engagea le matin et durajusqu'au soir.
14 Judas saw that Bacchides and the strength of his army were on the right; then all the stouthearted men went with him,	14 Judas s'aperçut que Bacchidès et le fort de son armée se trouvaient à droite: autour de lui segroupèrent tous les hommes de coeur,
15 and they crushed the right wing, and he pursued them as far as Mount Azotus.	15 l'aile droite fut écrasée par eux et ils la poursuivirent jusqu'aux monts Azâra.
16 When those on the left wing saw that the right wing was crushed, they turned and followed close behind Judas and his men.	16 Cependant, voyant que l'aile droite était enfoncée, les Syriens de l'aile gauche se rabattirentsur les talons de Judas et de ses compagnons, les prenant à revers.
17 The battle became desperate, and many on both sides were wounded and fell.	17 La lutte devint acharnée et, de part et d'autre, un grand nombre tombèrent frappés.
18 Judas also fell, and the rest fled.	18 Judas succomba lui aussi, et le reste prit la fuite.
19 Then Jonathan and Simon took Judas their brother and buried him in the tomb of their fathers at Modein,	19 Jonathan et Simon enlevèrent leur frère Judas et l'ensevelirent au tombeau de ses pères àModîn.
20 and wept for him. And all Israel made great lamentation for him; they mourned many days and said,	20 Tout Israël le pleura et mena sur lui un grand deuil, redisant plusieurs jours cettelamentation:
21 "How is the mighty fallen, the savior of Israel!"	21 "Comment est-il tombé, le héros qui sauvait Israël?"
22 Now the rest of the acts of Judas, and his wars and the brave deeds that he did, and his greatness, have not been recorded, for they were very many.	22 Le reste des actions de Judas, de ses guerres, des exploits qu'il accomplit et de ses titres degloire n'a pas été écrit; il y en avait trop.
23 After the death of Judas, the lawless emerged in all parts of Israel; all the doers of injustice appeared.	23 Après la mort de Judas, les sans-loi se montrèrent sur tout le territoire d'Israël et tous lesartisans d'iniquité reparurent.
24 In those days a very great famine occurred, and the country deserted with them to the enemy.	24 Comme en ces jours-là sévissait une très grande disette, le pays passa de leur côté.
25 And Bacchides chose the ungodly and put them in charge of the country.	25 Bacchidès choisit à dessein les hommes impies pour administrer le pays.
26 They sought and searched for the friends of Judas, and brought them to Bacchides, and he took vengeance on them and made sport of them.	26 Ceux-ci exerçaient sur les amis de Judas perquisitions et enquêtes, puis les faisaientcomparaître devant Bacchidès qui les punissait et les tournait en dérision.
27 Thus there was great distress in Israel, such as had not been since the time that prophets ceased to appear among them.	27 Il sévit alors en Israël une oppression telle qu'il ne s'en était pas produite de pareille depuisle jour où l'on n'y avait plus vu de prophète.
28 Then all the friends of Judas assembled and said to Jonathan,	28 Alors tous les amis de Judas se rassemblèrent et dirent à Jonathan:
29 "Since the death of your brother Judas there has been no one like him to go against our enemies and Bacchides, and to deal with those of our nation who hate us.	29 "Depuis que ton frère Judas est mort, il ne se trouve plus d'homme semblable à lui pours'opposer à nos ennemis, les Bacchidès et quiconque hait notre nation.
30 So now we have chosen you today to take his place as our ruler and leader, to fight our battle."	30 Nous te choisissons donc aujourd'hui même pour être à sa place notre chef et notre guidedans la lutte que nous avons entreprise."
31 And Jonathan at that time accepted the leadership and took the place of Judas his brother.	31 C'est à ce moment-là que Jonathan prit le commandement et la succession de son frèreJudas.
32 When Bacchides learned of this, he tried to kill him.	32 Bacchidès, l'ayant appris, cherchait à faire périr Jonathan.
33 But Jonathan and Simon his brother and all who were with him heard of it, and they fled into the wilderness of Tekoa and camped by the water of the pool of Asphar.	33 Celui-ci, en ayant eu connaissance, ainsi que son frère Simon et tous ceux quil'accompagnaient s'enfuirent au désert de Thékoé et campèrent près de l'eau de la citerne Asphar.
34 Bacchides found this out on the sabbath day, and he with all his army crossed the Jordan.	34 (Bacchidès le sut le jour du sabbat et vint lui aussi avec toute son armée au-delà duJourdain.)
35 And Jonathan * sent his brother as leader of the multitude and begged the Nabateans, who were his friends, for permission to store with them the great amount of baggage which they had.	35 Jonathan envoya son frère qui commandait à la troupe demander à ses amis les Nabatéensde mettre en dépôt chez eux ses bagages qui étaient considérables.
36 But the sons of Jambri from Medeba came out and seized John and all that he had, and departed with it.	36 Mais les fils de Amraï, ceux de Médaba, sortirent, s'emparèrent de Jean et de tout ce qu'ilavait et partirent avec leur butin.
37 After these things it was reported to Jonathan and Simon his brother, "The sons of Jambri are celebrating a great wedding, and are conducting the bride, a daughter of one of the great nobles of Canaan, from Nadabath with a large escort."	37 Après ces événements, on annonça à Jonathan et à Simon, son frère, que les fils de Amraïcélébraient une grande noce et amenaient en grande pompe depuis Nabatha la fiancée, fille d'un des grandspersonnages de Canaan.
38 And they remembered the blood of John their brother, and went up and hid under cover of the mountain.	38 Ils se souvinrent alors de la fin sanglante de leur frère Jean, et montèrent se cacher sousl'abri de la montagne.
39 They raised their eyes and looked, and saw a tumultuous procession with much baggage; and the bridegroom came out with his friends and his brothers to meet them with tambourines and musicians and many weapons.	39 En levant les yeux ils virent paraître, au milieu d'un bruit confus, un nombreux équipage,puis le fiancé, ses amis et ses frères s'avançant au-devant du cortège avec des tambourins, des musiques et unriche équipement guerrier.
40 Then they rushed upon them from the ambush and began killing them. Many were wounded and fell, and the rest fled to the mountain; and they took all their goods.	40 De leur embuscade les Juifs se jetèrent sur eux et les massacrèrent, faisant de nombreusesvictimes, tandis que les survivants fuyaient vers la montagne, et que toutes leurs dépouilles étaient emportées.
41 Thus the wedding was turned into mourning and the voice of their musicians into a funeral dirge.	41 Ainsi les noces se changèrent en deuil et les accents musicaux en lamentations.
42 And when they had fully avenged the blood of their brother, they returned to the marshes of the Jordan.	42 Ayant vengé de la sorte le sang de leur frère, ils revinrent aux rives fangeuses du Jourdain.
43 When Bacchides heard of this, he came with a large force on the sabbath day to the banks of the Jordan.	43 Bacchidès, l'ayant appris, vint le jour du sabbat jusqu'aux berges du Jourdain avec unenombreuse armée.
44 And Jonathan said to those with him, "Let us rise up now and fight for our lives, for today things are not as they were before.	44 Alors Jonathan dit à ses gens: "Debout! Luttons pour nos vies, car aujourd'hui ce n'est pascomme hier et avant-hier.
45 For look! the battle is in front of us and behind us; the water of the Jordan is on this side and on that, with marsh and thicket; there is no place to turn.	45 Voici que nous avons le combat en face de nous et derrière nous, ici l'eau du Jourdain, là lemarais et le fourré, il n'y a pas où battre en retraite.
46 Cry out now to Heaven that you may be delivered from the hands of our enemies."	46 Maintenant donc, criez vers le Ciel afin d'échapper au pouvoir de vos ennemis."
47 So the battle began, and Jonathan stretched out his hand to strike Bacchides, but he eluded him and went to the rear.	47 Le combat s'engagea et Jonathan étendit la main pour frapper Bacchidès, mais ce dernier luiéchappa en se rejetant en arrière.
48 Then Jonathan and the men with him leaped into the Jordan and swam across to the other side, and the enemy * did not cross the Jordan to attack them.	48 Alors Jonathan et ses compagnons sautèrent dans le Jourdain et atteignirent l'autre bord à lanage, mais les adversaires ne franchirent pas le fleuve à leur suite.
49 And about one thousand of Bacchides' men fell that day.	49 En cette journée, environ mille hommes restèrent sur le terrain du côté de Bacchidès.
50 Bacchides * then returned to Jerusalem and built strong cities in Judea: the fortress in Jericho, and Emmaus, and Beth-horon, and Bethel, and Timnath, and * Pharathon, and Tephon, with high walls and gates and bars.	50 De retour à Jérusalem, Bacchidès se mit à construire des villes fortes en Judée: la forteressequi est à Jéricho, Emmaüs, Bethorôn, Béthel, Tamnatha, Pharathôn et Tephôn, avec de hautes murailles, desportes et des verrous,
51 And he placed garrisons in them to harass Israel.	51 laissant en chacune d'elles une garnison pour sévir contre Israël.
52 He also fortified the city of Beth-zur, and Gazara, and the citadel, and in them he put troops and stores of food.	52 Il fortifia la ville de Bethsour, Gazara et la Citadelle; il y plaça des hommes armés et desdépôts de vivres.
53 And he took the sons of the leading men of the land as hostages and put them under guard in the citadel at Jerusalem.	53 Il prit comme otages les fils des chefs du pays et les fit mettre sous garde dans la Citadellede Jérusalem.
54 In the one hundred and fifty-third year, * in the second month, Alcimus gave orders to tear down the wall of the inner court of the sanctuary. He tore down the work of the prophets!	54 Et en l'année 153, au deuxième mois, Alkime ordonna d'abattre le mur de la cour intérieuredu sanctuaire; il détruisit les travaux des prophètes, il commença à démolir.
55 But he only began to tear it down, for at that time Alcimus was stricken and his work was hindered; his mouth was stopped and he was paralyzed, so that he could no longer say a word or give commands concerning his house.	55 En ce temps-là, Alkime eut une attaque et ses entreprises se trouvèrent empêchées. Sabouche s'obstrua et fut paralysée de sorte qu'il lui fut désormais impossible de prononcer une seule parole et dedonner des ordres concernant sa maison.
56 And Alcimus died at that time in great agony.	56 Alkime mourut à cette époque au milieu de vives souffrances.
57 When Bacchides saw that Alcimus was dead, he returned to the king, and the land of Judah had rest for two years.	57 Voyant qu'Alkime était mort, Bacchidès revint chez le roi et le pays de Juda fut en reposdurant deux ans.
58 Then all the lawless plotted and said, "See! Jonathan and his men are living in quiet and confidence. So now let us bring Bacchides back, and he will capture them all in one night."	58 Tous les sans-loi tinrent conseil: "Voici, disaient-ils, que Jonathan et les siens viventtranquilles en toute confiance; nous ferons donc venir maintenant Bacchidès et il les arrêtera tous en une seulenuit.
59 And they went and consulted with him.	59 Etant allés le trouver, ils en délibérèrent avec lui.
60 He started to come with a large force, and secretly sent letters to all his allies in Judea, telling them to seize Jonathan and his men; but they were unable to do it, because their plan became known.	60 Bacchidès se mit en route avec une forte armée et écrivit en secret à tous ses alliés de Judéepour leur demander de se saisir de Jonathan et de ses compagnons, mais ils ne le purent, leur dessein ayant étééventé.
61 And Jonathan's men * seized about fifty of the men of the country who were leaders in this treachery, and killed them.	61 Ceux-là, par contre, appréhendèrent parmi les hommes du pays, auteurs de cettescélératesse, une cinquantaine d'individus, et les massacrèrent.
62 Then Jonathan with his men, and Simon, withdrew to Bethbasi in the wilderness; he rebuilt the parts of it that had been demolished, and they fortified it.	62 Jonathan et Simon se retirèrent ensuite avec leurs partisans à Bethbassi dans le désert, ilsrelevèrent ce qui était ruiné de cette place et la consolidèrent...
63 When Bacchides learned of this, he assembled all his forces, and sent orders to the men of Judea.	63 Bacchidès, en ayant eu connaissance, rassembla tous ses gens et fit appel à ses partisans deJudée.
64 Then he came and encamped against Bethbasi; he fought against it for many days and made machines of war.	64 Il vint camper près de Bethbassi, l'attaqua durant de nombreux jours et fit construire desmachines.
65 But Jonathan left Simon his brother in the city, while he went out into the country; and he went with only a few men.	65 Laissant son frère Simon dans la ville, Jonathan sortit dans la campagne et marcha avec unepoignée de gens.
66 He struck down Odomera and his brothers and the sons of Phasiron in their tents.	66 Il battit Odoméra et ses frères ainsi que les fils de Phasirôn dans leur campement, ces gensse mirent à combattre eux aussi et à monter avec les troupes.
67 Then he * began to attack and went into battle with his forces; and Simon and his men sallied out from the city and set fire to the machines of war.	67 Simon et ses hommes firent une sortie et incendièrent les machines.
68 They fought with Bacchides, and he was crushed by them. They distressed him greatly, for his plan and his expedition had been in vain.	68 Ils combattirent Bacchidès qui, écrasé par eux, tomba dans un accablement profond parceque son plan et son attaque n'avaient pas réussi.
69 So he was greatly enraged at the lawless men who had counseled him to come into the country, and he killed many of them. Then he decided to depart to his own land.	69 Il entra en fureur contre les mécréants qui lui avaient conseillé de venir dans le pays, il entua beaucoup et, avec ses gens, il décida de retourner chez lui.
70 When Jonathan learned of this, he sent ambassadors to him to make peace with him and obtain release of the captives.	70 A cette nouvelle, Jonathan lui envoya des députés pour conclure avec lui la paix et lareddition des prisonniers.
71 He agreed, and did as he said; and he swore to Jonathan * that he would not try to harm him as long as he lived.	71 Il accepta et fut fidèle à ses engagements: il lui jura de ne pas chercher à lui faire du maldurant tous les jours de sa vie.
72 He restored to him the captives whom he had formerly taken from the land of Judah; then he turned and departed to his own land, and came no more into their territory.	72 Après avoir rendu les prisonniers qu'il avait faits auparavant au pays de Juda, Bacchidès s'enretourna chez lui et ne revint plus sur le territoire des Juifs.
73 Thus the sword ceased from Israel. And Jonathan dwelt in Michmash. And Jonathan began to judge the people, and he destroyed the ungodly out of Israel.	73 L'épée se reposa en Israël et Jonathan s'installa à Machmas où il se mit à juger le peuple, etil fit disparaître les impies du milieu d'Israël.
