1 This is a copy of the letter: "The Great King, Artaxerxes, to the rulers of the hundred and twenty-seven provinces from India to Ethiopia and to the governors under them, writes thus:	1 Le grand roi Artaxerxès, qui règne depuis les Indes jusqu'en Ethiopie, aux princes et aux gouverneurs des cent vingt-sept provinces qui sont soumises à son empire, salut. Quoique je commandasse à tant de nations, et que j'eusse soumis tout l'univers à mon empire, je n'ai pas voulu abuser de la grandeur de ma puissance, mais j'ai gouverén mes sujets avec clémence et avec bonté, afin que, passant leur vie doucement et sans aucune crainte, ils jouissent de la paix qui est désirée de tous les hommes.
2 "Having become ruler of many nations and master of the whole world, not elated with presumption of authority but always acting reasonably and with kindness, I have determined to settle the lives of my subjects in lasting tranquillity and, in order to make my kingdom peaceable and open to travel throughout all its extent, to re-establish the peace which all men desire.
3 "When I asked my counselors how this might be accomplished, Haman who excels among us in sound judgment, and is distinguished for his unchanging good will and steadfast fidelity, and has attained the second place in the kingdom,	3 Et ayant demandé à mes conseillers de quelle manière je pourrais accomplir ce dessein, l'un d'eux, nommé Aman, élevé par sa sagesse et sa fidélité au-dessus des autres, et le second après le roi,
4 pointed out to us that among all the nations in the world there is scattered a certain hostile people, who have laws contrary to those of every nation and continually disregard the ordinances of the kings, so that the unifying of the kingdom which we honorably intend cannot be brought about.	4 m'a informé qu'il y a un peuple dispersé dans toute la terre, qui suit de nouvelles lois, et qui, s'opposant aux coutumes des autres nations, méprise les commandements du roi, et trouble par la contrariété de ses sentiments la concorde de tous les peuples.
5 We understand that this people, and it alone, stands constantly in opposition to all men, perversely following a strange manner of life and laws, and is ill-disposed to our government, doing all the harm they can so that our kingdom may not attain stability.	5 Ce qu'ayant appris, et voyant qu'une seule nation se révolte contre tout le genre humain, suit des lois perverses, désobéit à nos ordonnances, et trouble la paix et la concorde des provinces qui nous sont soumises,
6 "Therefore we have decreed that those indicated to you in the letters of Haman, who is in charge of affairs and is our second father, shall all, with their wives and children, be utterly destroyed by the sword of their enemies, without pity or mercy, on the fourteenth day of the twelfth month, Adar, of this present year,	6 nous avons ordonné que tous ceux qu'Aman, qui commande à toutes les provinces, qui est le second après le roi, et que nous honorons comme un père, aura désignés, soient tués par leurs ennemis, avec leurs femmes et leurs enfants, le quatorzième jour d'adar, douzième mois de cette année, sans que personne en ait compassion;
7 so that those who have long been and are now hostile may in one day go down in violence to Hades, and leave our government completely secure and untroubled hereafter."	7 afin que ces scélréats, descendant tous aux enfers en un même jour, rendent à notre empire la paix qu'ils avaient troublée.
8 Then Mordecai prayed to the Lord, calling to remembrance all the works of the Lord. He said:	8 Or Mardochée pria le Seigneur, se souvenant de toutes Ses oeuvres,
9 "O Lord, Lord, King who rulest over all things, for the universe is in thy power and there is no one who can oppose thee if it is thy will to save Israel.	9 et il dit : Seigneur, Seigneur, roi tout-puissant, toutes choses sont soumises à Votre pouvoir, et nul ne peut résister à Votre volonté, si Vous avez résolu de sauver Israël.
10 For thou hast made heaven and earth and every wonderful thing under heaven,	10 Vous avez fait le ciel et la terre, et tout ce qui est contenu dans l'enceinte du ciel.
11 and thou art Lord of all, and there is no one who can resist thee, who art the Lord.	11 Vous êtes le Seigneur de toutes choses, et nul ne peut résister à Votre majesté.
12 Thou knowest all things; thou knowest, O Lord, that it was not in insolence or pride or for any love of glory that I did this, and refused to bow down to this proud Haman.	12 Vous connaissez tout, et Vous savez que si je n'ai point adoré le superbe Aman, ce n'a été ni par orgueil, ni par mépris, ni par quelque désir de gloire;
13 For I would have been willing to kiss the soles of his feet, to save Israel!	13 car volontiers, pour le salut d'Israël, j'aurais été disposé à baiser les traces mêmes de ses pieds.
14 But I did this, that I might not set the glory of man above the glory of God, and I will not bow down to any one but to thee, who art my Lord; and I will not do these things in pride.	14 Mais j'ai craint de transférer à un homme l'honneur de mon Dieu, et d'adorer quelqu'un en dehors de mon Dieu.
15 And now, O Lord God and King, God of Abraham, spare thy people; for the eyes of our foes are upon us to annihilate us, and they desire to destroy the inheritance that has been thine from the beginning.	15 Maintenant donc, Seigneur roi, Dieu d'Abraham, ayez pitié de Votre peuple, parce que nos ennemis veulent nous perdre et détruire Votre héritage.
16 Do not neglect thy portion, which thou didst redeem for thyself out of the land of Egypt.	16 Ne méprisez pas ce peuple qui est Votre partage, que Vous avez racheté de l'Egypte pour Vous.
17 Hear my prayer, and have mercy upon thy inheritance; turn our mourning into feasting, that we may live and sing praise to thy name, O Lord; do not destroy the mouth of those who praise thee."	17 Exaucez ma prière, et soyez propice à une nation qui est Votre part et Votre héritage, et changez, Seigneur, notre deuil en joie, afin que pendant notre vie nous glorifiions Votre nom, et ne fermez pas la bouche de ceux qui Vous louent.
18 And all Israel cried out mightily, for their death was before their eyes.	18 Tout Israël cria aussi au Seigneur, dans un même esprit et une même supplication, parce qu'une mort certaine les menaçait.
