Nehemiah 2

1 In the month of Nisan, in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, when wine was before him, I took up the wine and gave it to the king. Now I had not been sad in his presence.	1 Nel mese di Nisan, l'anno ventesimo del re Artaserse, men­tre il vino si trovava dinanzi a lui, io presi il vino e lo presentai al re. Siccome io stavo come un sofferente davanti al suo cospetto,
2 And the king said to me, "Why is your face sad, seeing you are not sick? This is nothing else but sadness of the heart." Then I was very much afraid.	2 il re mi disse: « Perchè hai l'aspetto triste? Malato non sembri. Un motivo ci deve essere; ma io non conosco il male che è nel tuo cuore ». Io, pieno di grandissima paura,
3 I said to the king, "Let the king live for ever! Why should not my face be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers' sepulchres, lies waste, and its gates have been destroyed by fire?"	3 dissi al re: « O re, vivi in eterno! Come potrebbe non esser triste la mia faccia, mentre la città, luogo dei sepolcri dei miei padri, è deserta e le sue porte son consumate dal fuoco? »
4 Then the king said to me, "For what do you make request?" So I prayed to the God of heaven.	4 Il re mi disse: « Che domandi? » Io, pregato il Dio del cielo,
5 And I said to the king, "If it pleases the king, and if your servant has found favor in your sight, that you send me to Judah, to the city of my fathers' sepulchres, that I may rebuild it."	5 dissi al re: « Se così piace al re, se il tuo servo ha trovato grazia davanti al tuo cospetto, mandami nella Giudea, alla città del sepolcro di mio padre, a riedificarla ».
6 And the king said to me (the queen sitting beside him), "How long will you be gone, and when will you return?" So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time.	6 Allora, il re, colla regina che gli sedeva accanto, mi disse: « Quanto durerà il tuo viaggio? quando ritornerai? » Essendo piaciuto al cospetto del re di mandarmi, io gli fissai il tempo.
7 And I said to the king, "If it pleases the king, let letters be given me to the governors of the province Beyond the River, that they may let me pass through until I come to Judah;	7 Poi dissi al re: « Se al re piace, mi dia lettere per i governatori del paese di là dal fiume, affinchè mi facciano condurre, finché io non sia arrivato nella Giudea,
8 and a letter to Asaph, the keeper of the king's forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the fortress of the temple, and for the wall of the city, and for the house which I shall occupy." And the king granted me what I asked, for the good hand of my God was upon me.	8 e una lettera a Asaf, custode della foresta reale, affinchè mi dia legname per coprire le porte della torre della casa, le mura della città e la casa nella quale andrò a stare io ». Il re, essendomi favorevole la mano del mio Dio, mi diede le lettere.
9 Then I came to the governors of the province Beyond the River, and gave them the king's letters. Now the king had sent with me officers of the army and horsemen.	9 Giunto che fui dai governatori del paese di là dal fiume, diedi loro le lettere del re. Il re aveva mandato con me dei capi della milizia e dei cavalieri.
10 But when Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, heard this, it displeased them greatly that some one had come to seek the welfare of the children of Israel.	10 Or quando Sanaballat Horonita e Tobia, servo Ammonita, ne furono informati, ebbero gran dispiacere della venuta d'un uomo che procurasse il bene dei figli d'Israele.
11 So I came to Jerusalem and was there three days.	11 Giunto a Gerusalemme, dopo avervi passato tre giorni,
12 Then I arose in the night, I and a few men with me; and I told no one what my God had put into my heart to do for Jerusalem. There was no beast with me but the beast on which I rode.	12 mi levai di notte con pochi uomini, senza manifestare ad alcuno quel che Dio m'aveva messo in cuore di fare in Gerusalemme, e senza avere con me altro giumento oltre quello da me cavalcato.
13 I went out by night by the Valley Gate to the Jackal's Well and to the Dung Gate, and I inspected the walls of Jerusalem which were broken down and its gates which had been destroyed by fire.	13 Uscito di notte per la porta della Valle, (passando) davanti alla fonte del Dragone e alla porta del Letame, andai ad esaminare le mura di Gerusalemme atterrate e le sue porte consumate dal fuoco.
14 Then I went on to the Fountain Gate and to the King's Pool; but there was no place for the beast that was under me to pass.	14 Passai pei alla porta della fontana e all'acquedotto del re, e non essendovi posto da passare col giumento da me cavalcato,
15 Then I went up in the night by the valley and inspected the wall; and I turned back and entered by the Valley Gate, and so returned.	15 salii durante la notte pel torrente, esaminai le mura, fino a ritornare alla porta della Valle. Poi me ne ritornai.
16 And the officials did not know where I had gone or what I was doing; and I had not yet told the Jews, the priests, the nobles, the officials, and the rest that were to do the work.	16 I magistrati non sapevano dove fossi andato, nè quel che facessi, e fino a quel momento io non avevo detto nulla, nè ai Giudei, nè ai sacerdoti, nè ai grandi, nè ai magistrati, nè a quelli che facevano i lavori.
17 Then I said to them, "You see the trouble we are in, how Jerusalem lies in ruins with its gates burned. Come, let us build the wall of Jerusalem, that we may no longer suffer disgrace."	17 Poi dissi loro: « Voi conoscete l'afflizione nella quale ci troviamo: Gerusalemme è deserta, le sue porte son consumate dal fuoco: venite, riedifichiamo le mura di Gerusalemme, per non stare più in questo obbrobrio ».
18 And I told them of the hand of my God which had been upon me for good, and also of the words which the king had spoken to me. And they said, "Let us rise up and build." So they strengthened their hands for the good work.	18 Esposto come mi avesse favorito la mano del mio Dio, riferite le parole che il re m'aveva dette, soggiunsi: « Su via, mettiamoci a fabbricare! » E le loro mani presero vigore per lavorare nel bene.
19 But when Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arab heard of it, they derided us and despised us and said, "What is this thing that you are doing? Are you rebelling against the king?"	19 Ma Sanaballat Horonita, Tobia, servo Ammonita, e Gosem Arabo, udito ciò, si misero a beffarsi di noi, a disprezzarci e a dire: « Che cosa vi mettete a fare? Forse vi ribellate contro il re? »
20 Then I replied to them, "The God of heaven will make us prosper, and we his servants will arise and build; but you have no portion or right or memorial in Jerusalem."	20 Ma io in risposta dissi loro: « Il Dio stesso del cielo ci aiuta, e noi siamo suoi servi e possiamo metterci a fabbricare; ma voi non avete parte, nè diritto, nè memoria in Gerusalemme ».
