Nehemiah 2

1 In the month of Nisan, in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, when wine was before him, I took up the wine and gave it to the king. Now I had not been sad in his presence.	1 ED avvenne l’anno ventesimo del re Artaserse, nel mese di Nisan, che, essendo stato portato il vino davanti a lui, io presi il vino, e lo porsi al re. Or io non soleva esser mesto nel suo cospetto.
2 And the king said to me, "Why is your face sad, seeing you are not sick? This is nothing else but sadness of the heart." Then I was very much afraid.	2 E il re mi disse: Perchè è la tua faccia mesta, non essendo tu infermo? questo non è altro se non afflizione di cuore. Ed io ebbi grandissima paura;
3 I said to the king, "Let the king live for ever! Why should not my face be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers' sepulchres, lies waste, and its gates have been destroyed by fire?"	3 e dissi al re: Possa il re vivere in perpetuo; come non sarebbe la mia faccia mesta, rimanendo la città, che è il luogo delle sepolture de’ miei padri, distrutta, e le sue porte consumate dal fuoco?
4 Then the king said to me, "For what do you make request?" So I prayed to the God of heaven.	4 E il re mi disse: Che chiedi tu? Allora io pregai l’Iddio del cielo;
5 And I said to the king, "If it pleases the king, and if your servant has found favor in your sight, that you send me to Judah, to the city of my fathers' sepulchres, that I may rebuild it."	5 e dissi al re: Se così piace al re, e se il tuo servitore ti è in grazia, mandami in Giudea, nella città dove sono le sepolture de’ miei padri, acciocchè io la riedifichi.
6 And the king said to me (the queen sitting beside him), "How long will you be gone, and when will you return?" So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time.	6 E il re mi disse, ed anche la sua moglie che gli sedeva allato: Quanto tempo metterai alla tua andata, e quando ritornerai? E quando io ebbi detto il tempo al re, egli ebbe a grado di darmi licenza.
7 And I said to the king, "If it pleases the king, let letters be given me to the governors of the province Beyond the River, that they may let me pass through until I come to Judah;	7 Poi dissi al re: Se così piace al re, sienmi date lettere a’ governatori di là dal fiume, acciocchè mi lascino passare, finchè io sia giunto in Giudea.
8 and a letter to Asaph, the keeper of the king's forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the fortress of the temple, and for the wall of the city, and for the house which I shall occupy." And the king granted me what I asked, for the good hand of my God was upon me.	8 Ed anche lettere ad Asaf, guardiano de’ boschi del re, acciocchè mi dia legname per fabbricar le porte del palazzo della Casa di Dio, e per le mura della città, e per la casa nella quale io entrerò. E il re mi diede quelle lettere, secondo che la mano di Dio era buona sopra me
9 Then I came to the governors of the province Beyond the River, and gave them the king's letters. Now the king had sent with me officers of the army and horsemen.	9 Ed io me ne venni a’ governatori di qua dal fiume, e diedi loro le lettere del re or il re avea mandati meco capitani e cavalieri.
10 But when Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, heard this, it displeased them greatly that some one had come to seek the welfare of the children of Israel.	10 Quando Samballat Horonita; e Tobia, servo Ammonita, ebbero udite queste cose, ebbero gran dispiacere che fosse venuto alcuno per procacciar del bene a’ figliuoli d’Israele.
11 So I came to Jerusalem and was there three days.	11 Poi giunsi in Gerusalemme; ed essendovi stato tre giorni,
12 Then I arose in the night, I and a few men with me; and I told no one what my God had put into my heart to do for Jerusalem. There was no beast with me but the beast on which I rode.	12 mi levai di notte, con alcuni pochi uomini, e non dichiarai ad alcuno ciò che l’Iddio mio mi metteva in cuore di fare a Gerusalemme; e non avea meco alcun’altra bestia, che quella che io cavalcava.
13 I went out by night by the Valley Gate to the Jackal's Well and to the Dung Gate, and I inspected the walls of Jerusalem which were broken down and its gates which had been destroyed by fire.	13 Io adunque uscii di notte dalla porta della valle, e passai dirincontro alla fontana del dragone, ed alla porta del letame; ed andava considerando le mura di Gerusalemme, come erano rotte, e come le porte di essa erano consumate dal fuoco.
14 Then I went on to the Fountain Gate and to the King's Pool; but there was no place for the beast that was under me to pass.	14 E di là io passai alla porta della fontana, e all’acquidotto del re; e non vi era spazio per la mia cavalcatura da passar sotto di me.
15 Then I went up in the night by the valley and inspected the wall; and I turned back and entered by the Valley Gate, and so returned.	15 E risalendo per lo torrente, mentre era ancora notte, io andava considerando le mura; poi rientrai per la porta della valle, e così me ne rivenni.
16 And the officials did not know where I had gone or what I was doing; and I had not yet told the Jews, the priests, the nobles, the officials, and the rest that were to do the work.	16 Ora i magistrati non sapevano ove io fossi andato, nè ciò che io facessi; ed io fino allora non l’avea dichiarato nè ai Giudei, nè a’ sacerdoti, nè agli uomini notabili, nè a’ magistrati, nè agli altri che aveano la cura dell’opera.
17 Then I said to them, "You see the trouble we are in, how Jerusalem lies in ruins with its gates burned. Come, let us build the wall of Jerusalem, that we may no longer suffer disgrace."	17 Allora io dissi loro: Voi vedete la miseria nella quale noi siamo, come Gerusalemme è distrutta, e le sue porte sono bruciate col fuoco: venite, riedifichiamo le mura di Gerusalemme, acciocchè non siamo più in vituperio.
18 And I told them of the hand of my God which had been upon me for good, and also of the words which the king had spoken to me. And they said, "Let us rise up and build." So they strengthened their hands for the good work.	18 Ed io dichiarai loro come la mano dell’Iddio mio era buona sopra me; ed anche le parole del re, che egli mi avea dette. Ed essi dissero: Or mettiamoci ad edificare. Così presero animo a far bene.
19 But when Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arab heard of it, they derided us and despised us and said, "What is this thing that you are doing? Are you rebelling against the king?"	19 Ma Samballat Horonita, e Tobia, servo Ammonita, e Ghesem Arabo, avendo udito questo, ci beffavano, e ci sprezzavano, e dicevano: Che cosa è questo che voi fate? vi volete voi ribellar contro al re?
20 Then I replied to them, "The God of heaven will make us prosper, and we his servants will arise and build; but you have no portion or right or memorial in Jerusalem."	20 Ed io risposi, e dissi loro: L’Iddio del cielo è quel che ci farà prosperare; e noi, suoi servitori, ci metteremo ad edificare; ma voi non avete parte, nè diritto, nè memoria alcuna in Gerusalemme
