1 After these things and these acts of faithfulness Sennacherib king of Assyria came and invaded Judah and encamped against the fortified cities, thinking to win them for himself.	1 Dopo queste cose e tali atti di fedeltà, venne Sennacherib re d'Assiria ed entrato in Giuda assediò le città forti per espugnarle.
2 And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come and intended to fight against Jerusalem,	2 Quando Ezechia s'accorse che Sennacherib era venuto per rivolgere tutto l'impeto della guerra contro Gerusalemme,
3 he planned with his officers and his mighty men to stop the water of the springs that were outside the city; and they helped him.	3 deliberò coi principi e cogli uomini più valorosi di turare le sorgenti delle fontane che eran fuori di città. Essendo stati tutti dello stesso parere,
4 A great many people were gathered, and they stopped all the springs and the brook that flowed through the land, saying, "Why should the kings of Assyria come and find much water?"	4 radunò grandissimo numero di gente, e turarono tutte le fontane e il ruscello che correva in mezzo alla contrada, per timore che gli Assiri, venendo, potessero trovare abbondanza d'acqua.
5 He set to work resolutely and built up all the wall that was broken down, and raised towers upon it, and outside it he built another wall; and he strengthened the Millo in the city of David. He also made weapons and shields in abundance.	5 Egli inoltre riparò con ogni diligenza tutta la muraglia dov'era rovinata; vi costruì sopra delle torri e un altro muro al di fuori; restaurò Mello nella città di David, e fece armi d'ogni sorta e scudi.
6 And he set combat commanders over the people, and gathered them together to him in the square at the gate of the city and spoke encouragingly to them, saying,	6 Stabiliti dei capi dei combattenti nell'esercito, li convocò tutti sulla piazza della porta della città, e parlò loro al cuore, dicendo:
7 "Be strong and of good courage. Do not be afraid or dismayed before the king of Assyria and all the horde that is with him; for there is one greater with us than with him.	7 « Siate valorosi, fatevi animo e non temete, e non abbiate paura del re d'Assiria, nè di tutta quella mol­titudine che è con lui, perchè c'è più gente con noi che con lui.
8 With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the LORD our God, to help us and to fight our battles." And the people took confidence from the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.	8 Con lui infatti v'è un braccio di carne: con noi il Signore Dio nostro, che è il nostro aiuto e com­batte per noi ». Il popolo a que­ste parole d'Ezechia re di Giuda si fece animo.
9 After this Sennacherib king of Assyria, who was besieging Lachish with all his forces, sent his servants to Jerusalem to Hezekiah king of Judah and to all the people of Judah that were in Jerusalem, saying,	9 Avvenute tali cose, Sennacherib re di Assiria mandò i suoi servi a Gerusalemme (allora con tutto il suo esercito assediava Lachis) ad Ezechia re di Giuda e a tutto il popolo che era nella città, a dire:
10 "Thus says Sennacherib king of Assyria, 'On what are you relying, that you stand siege in Jerusalem?	10 « Queste cose elice Sennacherib re d'Assiria: In chi avete fiducia per restare così assediati in Gerusalemme?
11 Is not Hezekiah misleading you, that he may give you over to die by famine and by thirst, when he tells you, "The LORD our God will deliver us from the hand of the king of Assyria"?	11 Non v'inganna forse Ezechia, per farvi morire di fame e di sete, assicurandovi che il Signore vostro Dio vi libererà dal re d'Assiria?
12 Has not this same Hezekiah taken away his high places and his altars and commanded Judah and Jerusalem, "Before one altar you shall worship, and upon it you shall burn your sacrifices"?	12 Non è forse quell'Ezechia che distrusse i suoi alti luoghi e gli altari, e diede a Giuda e a Gerusalemme quest'ordine: Adorerete dinanzi ad un solo altare, e sopra di esso brucerete l'incenso?
13 Do you not know what I and my fathers have done to all the peoples of other lands? Were the gods of the nations of those lands at all able to deliver their lands out of my hand?	13 Non sapete voi quello che io e i miei padri abbiamo fatto a tutti i popoli della terra? Gli dèi delle genti e di tutti i paesi furono essi così forti da liberare il loro paese dalla mia mano?
14 Who among all the gods of those nations which my fathers utterly destroyed was able to deliver his people from my hand, that your God should be able to deliver you from my hand?	14 Qual'è, fra tutti gli dèi delle nazioni che i miei padri han devastate, quello che abbia potuto liberare il suo popolo dalla mia mano? Potrà dunque liberarvi da questa mia mano il vostro Dio?
15 Now therefore do not let Hezekiah deceive you or mislead you in this fashion, and do not believe him, for no god of any nation or kingdom has been able to deliver his people from my hand or from the hand of my fathers. How much less will your God deliver you out of my hand!'"	15 Non v'inganni dunque Ezechia, non v'illuda con vana persuasione: non gli credete; perchè se nessun dio di tutte le genti e di tutti i regni potè liberare il suo popolo dalla mia mano e dalla mano dei miei padri: ne viene che nemmeno il vostro Dio potrà liberarvi dalla mia mano ».
16 And his servants said still more against the Lord GOD and against his servant Hezekiah.	16 I servi di Sennacherib dissero pure molte altre cose contro il Signore Dio e contro il suo sera­vo Ezechia.
17 And he wrote letters to cast contempt on the LORD the God of Israel and to speak against him, saying, "Like the gods of the nations of the lands who have not delivered their people from my hands, so the God of Hezekiah will not deliver his people from my hand."	17 Sennacherib scrisse anche lettere piene di bestemmie contro il Signore Dio d'Israele, e disse contro di lui: « Come gli dèi delle altre genti non poteron liberare il loro popolo dalla mia mano, così anche il Dio d'Ezechia non potrà salvare da questa mano il suo popolo ».
18 And they shouted it with a loud voice in the language of Judah to the people of Jerusalem who were upon the wall, to frighten and terrify them, in order that they might take the city.	18 Oltre a ciò, ad aita voce, in lingua ebraica, gridava contro il popolo che stava sulle mura di Gerusalemme, per atterrirli e prendere la città.
19 And they spoke of the God of Jerusalem as they spoke of the gods of the peoples of the earth, which are the work of men's hands.	19 Egli parlò contro il Dio di Gerusalemme, come contro gli dèi delle nazioni della terra, opere delle mani degli uomini.
20 Then Hezekiah the king and Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, prayed because of this and cried to heaven.	20 Ma contro tale bestemmia pregarono il re Ezechia e il pro­feta Isaia figlio di Amos, mandando grida sino al cielo.
21 And the LORD sent an angel, who cut off all the mighty warriors and commanders and officers in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned with shame of face to his own land. And when he came into the house of his god, some of his own sons struck him down there with the sword.	21 Allora il Signore mandò un angelo che colpì tutti gli uomini forti e i capi guerrieri dell'esercito del re d'Assiria, il quale se ne tornò svergognato al suo paese, ed essendo entrato nel tempio del suo dio, i suoi figli, che erano usciti da lui, lo uccisero di spada.
22 So the LORD saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib king of Assyria and from the hand of all his enemies; and he gave them rest on every side.	22 Così il Signore salvò Ezechia e gli abitanti di Gerusalemme dalla mano di Sennacherib re d'Assiria e dalla mano di tutti gli altri, e diede loro riposo d'ogni intorno.
23 And many brought gifts to the LORD to Jerusalem and precious things to Hezekiah king of Judah, so that he was exalted in the sight of all nations from that time onward.	23 Allora molti portaron vittime e offerte al Signore in Gerusalemme, e doni a Ezechia re di Giuda, il quale dopo queste cose fu esaltato presso tutte le genti.
24 In those days Hezekiah became sick and was at the point of death, and he prayed to the LORD; and he answered him and gave him a sign.	24 In quei giorni Ezechia si ammalò a morte, ma il Signore, da lui pregato, lo guarì e gliene diede il segno.
25 But Hezekiah did not make return according to the benefit done to him, for his heart was proud. Therefore wrath came upon him and Judah and Jerusalem.	25 Egli però non corrispose ai benefìzi ricevuti, e siccome il suo cuore s'insuperbì, l'ira divampò contro di lui, contro Giuda e contro Gerusalemme;
26 But Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of the LORD did not come upon them in the days of Hezekiah.	26 ma poi si umiliò per essersi insuperbito nel suo cuore, cogli abitanti di Gerusalemme; per questo l'ira del Signore non venne sopra di loro durante la vita d'Ezechia.
27 And Hezekiah had very great riches and honor; and he made for himself treasuries for silver, for gold, for precious stones, for spices, for shields, and for all kinds of costly vessels;	27 Ezechia fu ricco e molto illustre, e si ammassò grandi tesori d'argento, d'oro, di pietre preziose, di aromi, di armi d'ogni genere, e di vasi di gran pregio.
28 storehouses also for the yield of grain, wine, and oil; and stalls for all kinds of cattle, and sheepfolds.	28 Ebbe anche magazzini di grano, di vino e di olio, e delle stalle per ogni specie di giumenti, e degli ovili per le pecore.
29 He likewise provided cities for himself, and flocks and herds in abundance; for God had given him very great possessions.	29 Si edificò delle città, ed ebbe innumerevoli greggi di pecore e di armenti, perchè il Signore gli aveva date stragrandi ricchezze.
30 This same Hezekiah closed the upper outlet of the waters of Gihon and directed them down to the west side of the city of David. And Hezekiah prospered in all his works.	30 Fu proprio lui, Ezechia, quel­lo che turò la fontana superiore delle acque di Gihon e le deviò sotto terra verso l'occidente della città di David. Egli riuscì felicemente in tutte le sue imprese.
31 And so in the matter of the envoys of the princes of Babylon, who had been sent to him to inquire about the sign that had been done in the land, God left him to himself, in order to try him and to know all that was in his heart.	31 Però nella legazione dei principi di Babilonia, mandati a lui per informarsi intorno al prodigio che era avvenuto sulla terra, Dio lo abbandonò alla tentazione per conoscere tutto quello ch'egli aveva in cuore.
32 Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and his good deeds, behold, they are written in the vision of Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz, in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel.	32 Il resto degli atti d'Ezechia e delle sue misericordie sono scritte nella visione d'Isaia, figlio d'Amos profeta, e nel libro dei re di Giuda e d'Israele.
33 And Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the ascent of the tombs of the sons of David; and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem did him honor at his death. And Manasseh his son reigned in his stead.	33 Ezechia s'addormentò coi suoi padri e fu sepolto sopra le tombe dei fi­gli di David. Tutto Giuda gli fece i funerali con tutti gli abitanti di Gerusalemme, e gli successe nel regno il suo figlio Manasse.
