1 After these things and these acts of faithfulness Sennacherib king of Assyria came and invaded Judah and encamped against the fortified cities, thinking to win them for himself.	1 Dopo questi fatti e prove di fedeltà giunse Sennàcherib, re di Assiria. Entrò in Giudea, assediò le città fortificate e ordinò di aprirvi delle brecce.
2 And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come and intended to fight against Jerusalem,	2 Quando Ezechia vide che Sennàcherib era arrivato con il proposito di attaccare Gerusalemme,
3 he planned with his officers and his mighty men to stop the water of the springs that were outside the city; and they helped him.	3 tenne consiglio con i prìncipi e con i suoi prodi, per ostruire le acque delle sorgenti che si trovavano fuori della città; essi lo appoggiarono.
4 A great many people were gathered, and they stopped all the springs and the brook that flowed through the land, saying, "Why should the kings of Assyria come and find much water?"	4 Si riunì pertanto una folla di popolo e furono otturate tutte le sorgenti e i corsi d'acqua che scorrevano in mezzo al paese. "Perché -- si diceva -- i re di Assiria dovrebbero venire e trovare acque abbondanti?".
5 He set to work resolutely and built up all the wall that was broken down, and raised towers upon it, and outside it he built another wall; and he strengthened the Millo in the city of David. He also made weapons and shields in abundance.	5 Egli agì da forte: riparò tutte le mura rovinate, vi eresse sopra le torri e al di fuori un muro esterno. Rafforzò il Millo della Città di Davide, indi fece preparare giavellotti e scudi in gran numero.
6 And he set combat commanders over the people, and gathered them together to him in the square at the gate of the city and spoke encouragingly to them, saying,	6 Alla testa del popolo pose capi militari, li radunò presso di sé sulla piazza presso la porta della città e così parlò al loro cuore:
7 "Be strong and of good courage. Do not be afraid or dismayed before the king of Assyria and all the horde that is with him; for there is one greater with us than with him.	7 "Siate forti e fatevi coraggio! Non temete e non spaventatevi di fronte al re di Assiria e di fronte a tutta la moltitudine che è insieme a lui, perché con noi c'è uno più grande che non con lui.
8 With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the LORD our God, to help us and to fight our battles." And the people took confidence from the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.	8 Con lui vi è un braccio di carne, mentre con noi c'è il Signore, nostro Dio, per soccorrerci e combattere le nostre battaglie". Il popolo ebbe fiducia nelle parole di Ezechia, re di Giuda.
9 After this Sennacherib king of Assyria, who was besieging Lachish with all his forces, sent his servants to Jerusalem to Hezekiah king of Judah and to all the people of Judah that were in Jerusalem, saying,	9 Dopo di ciò Sennàcherib, re di Assiria, mentre si trovava a Lachis con tutte le sue forze, inviò i suoi servitori a Gerusalemme presso Ezechia, re di Giuda, e presso tutti i Giudei che si trovavano a Gerusalemme per dir loro: "
10 "Thus says Sennacherib king of Assyria, 'On what are you relying, that you stand siege in Jerusalem?	10 Così parla Sennàcherib, re di Assiria: In che cosa riponete la vostra fiducia, assediati come siete in Gerusalemme?
11 Is not Hezekiah misleading you, that he may give you over to die by famine and by thirst, when he tells you, "The LORD our God will deliver us from the hand of the king of Assyria"?	11 Non vi seduce forse Ezechia per consegnarvi alla morte di fame e di sete, quando afferma: "Il Signore, nostro Dio, ci libererà dalla mano del re di Assiria"?
12 Has not this same Hezekiah taken away his high places and his altars and commanded Judah and Jerusalem, "Before one altar you shall worship, and upon it you shall burn your sacrifices"?	12 Non è forse lui, Ezechia, che fece rimuovere le sue alture e i suoi altari ordinando a Giuda e Gerusalemme: "Dinanzi a un unico altare voi vi prosternerete e su di esso offrirete l'incenso"?
13 Do you not know what I and my fathers have done to all the peoples of other lands? Were the gods of the nations of those lands at all able to deliver their lands out of my hand?	13 Non sapete forse ciò che ho fatto, io e i miei padri, a tutti i popoli dei paesi? Sono stati forse capaci gli dèi delle genti di quelle regioni di liberare i loro paesi dalla mia mano?
14 Who among all the gods of those nations which my fathers utterly destroyed was able to deliver his people from my hand, that your God should be able to deliver you from my hand?	14 Tra tutti gli dèi di quelle nazioni che i miei padri hanno votato all'anatema, chi poté liberare il proprio popolo dalla mia mano? E il vostro Dio potrà liberarvi dalla mia mano?
15 Now therefore do not let Hezekiah deceive you or mislead you in this fashion, and do not believe him, for no god of any nation or kingdom has been able to deliver his people from my hand or from the hand of my fathers. How much less will your God deliver you out of my hand!'"	15 Or dunque, Ezechia non v'inganni e non vi seduca in questo modo; non prestategli fede! Se infatti nessun dio di nessuna nazione e regno fu in grado di liberare il suo popolo dalla mia mano e da quella dei miei padri, tanto meno il vostro Dio potrà liberarvi dalla mia mano!".
16 And his servants said still more against the Lord GOD and against his servant Hezekiah.	16 I suoi servitori parlarono ancora contro il Signore Dio e contro Ezechia, suo servo.
17 And he wrote letters to cast contempt on the LORD the God of Israel and to speak against him, saying, "Like the gods of the nations of the lands who have not delivered their people from my hands, so the God of Hezekiah will not deliver his people from my hand."	17 Sennàcherib aveva scritto una lettera per insultare il Signore, Dio d'Israele, parlando contro di lui in questi termini: "Come gli dèi delle genti dei vari paesi non hanno liberato i popoli dalla mia mano, così il Dio di Ezechia non libererà il suo popolo dalla mia mano".
18 And they shouted it with a loud voice in the language of Judah to the people of Jerusalem who were upon the wall, to frighten and terrify them, in order that they might take the city.	18 Gl'inviati gridavano a gran voce in lingua giudaica al popolo di Gerusalemme, che si trovava sulle mura, per spaventarlo e sconvolgerlo, al fine di poter conquistare la città.
19 And they spoke of the God of Jerusalem as they spoke of the gods of the peoples of the earth, which are the work of men's hands.	19 Essi parlavano del Dio di Gerusalemme come di uno degli dèi dei popoli della terra, che sono opera delle mani dell'uomo.
20 Then Hezekiah the king and Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, prayed because of this and cried to heaven.	20 Ma il re Ezechia e il profeta Isaia, figlio di Amoz, si misero a pregare a questo proposito gridando verso il cielo.
21 And the LORD sent an angel, who cut off all the mighty warriors and commanders and officers in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned with shame of face to his own land. And when he came into the house of his god, some of his own sons struck him down there with the sword.	21 Allora il Signore inviò un angelo che sterminò tutti i prodi guerrieri, i prìncipi e i capi nell'accampamento del re di Assiria. Questi ritornò al suo paese con il viso coperto di vergogna; quando entrò nel tempio del suo dio, coloro che erano usciti dalle sue viscere lo uccisero con la spada.
22 So the LORD saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib king of Assyria and from the hand of all his enemies; and he gave them rest on every side.	22 Così il Signore salvò Ezechia e gli abitanti di Gerusalemme dalla mano di Sennàcherib, re di Assiria, e dalla mano di tutti i suoi nemici, dandogli riposo da ogni parte.
23 And many brought gifts to the LORD to Jerusalem and precious things to Hezekiah king of Judah, so that he was exalted in the sight of all nations from that time onward.	23 Molti portarono doni per il Signore a Gerusalemme e oggetti preziosi per Ezechia, re di Giuda, che da allora salì in considerazione agli occhi di tutte le nazioni.
24 In those days Hezekiah became sick and was at the point of death, and he prayed to the LORD; and he answered him and gave him a sign.	24 In quel tempo Ezechia fu colpito da una malattia mortale. Egli pregò il Signore, che gli rispose concedendogli un prodigio.
25 But Hezekiah did not make return according to the benefit done to him, for his heart was proud. Therefore wrath came upon him and Judah and Jerusalem.	25 Ma Ezechia non corrispose al beneficio che gli era stato concesso, perché il suo cuore si era inorgoglito e sopra di lui, sopra Giuda e Gerusalemme pesò l'ira divina.
26 But Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of the LORD did not come upon them in the days of Hezekiah.	26 Allora Ezechia si umiliò dell'orgoglio del suo cuore, lui e gli abitanti di Gerusalemme, e così l'ira del Signore non venne sopra di essi durante i giorni di Ezechia.
27 And Hezekiah had very great riches and honor; and he made for himself treasuries for silver, for gold, for precious stones, for spices, for shields, and for all kinds of costly vessels;	27 Ezechia ebbe ricchezze e onore in grande abbondanza. Si procurò tesori in argento e oro, in pietre preziose, profumi, scudi e in ogni specie di oggetti preziosi.
28 storehouses also for the yield of grain, wine, and oil; and stalls for all kinds of cattle, and sheepfolds.	28 Possedette magazzini per il raccolto del grano, del mosto e dell'olio, e anche stalle per ogni specie di bestiame e ovili per i greggi.
29 He likewise provided cities for himself, and flocks and herds in abundance; for God had given him very great possessions.	29 Fece costruire città ed ebbe bestiame minuto e grosso in abbondanza, perché Dio gli aveva concesso un immenso patrimonio.
30 This same Hezekiah closed the upper outlet of the waters of Gihon and directed them down to the west side of the city of David. And Hezekiah prospered in all his works.	30 Ezechia otturò l'uscita superiore delle acque di Ghicon e le diresse in basso verso l'occidente della città di Davide. Ezechia riuscì in tutte le sue imprese.
31 And so in the matter of the envoys of the princes of Babylon, who had been sent to him to inquire about the sign that had been done in the land, God left him to himself, in order to try him and to know all that was in his heart.	31 Ma quando i capi di Babilonia inviarono a lui dei messi per informarsi del prodigio che era avvenuto nel paese, Dio lo abbandonò per metterlo alla prova e conoscere tutto ciò che era nel suo cuore.
32 Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and his good deeds, behold, they are written in the vision of Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz, in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel.	32 Il resto degli atti di Ezechia e delle sue opere pie sono scritti nella Visione del profeta Isaia, figlio di Amoz, e nel libro dei re di Giuda e d'Israele.
33 And Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the ascent of the tombs of the sons of David; and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem did him honor at his death. And Manasseh his son reigned in his stead.	33 Ezechia si addormentò con i suoi padri e fu sepolto sulla salita dei sepolcri dei figli di Davide. Alla sua morte tutti i Giudei e gli abitanti di Gerusalemme gli resero onore. E Manasse, suo figlio, regnò al suo posto.
