1 Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king.	1 Roboamo andò a Sichem, ove s'era adunato tutto Israele per costituirlo re.
2 And when Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard of it (for he was in Egypt, whither he had fled from King Solomon), then Jeroboam returned from Egypt.	2 Ma Geroboamo figlio di Nabat, che era in Egitto, ove era fuggito dinanzi a Salomone, avendo ciò udito, tornò immediatamente.
3 And they sent and called him; and Jeroboam and all Israel came and said to Rehoboam,	3 Lo chiamarono, ed egli con tutto Israele andò a parlare a Roboamo in questi termini:
4 "Your father made our yoke heavy. Now therefore lighten the hard service of your father and his heavy yoke upon us, and we will serve you."	4 « Tuo padre ci oppresse sotto un giogo durissimo: tu comanda con più dolcezza di tuo padre, che ci ha imposta una servitù pesante; alleggeriscici un poco le gravezze, e noi ti serviremo ».
5 He said to them, "Come to me again in three days." So the people went away.	5 Roboamo disse: « Di qui a tre giorni tornate da me ». Partito il popolo
6 Then King Rehoboam took counsel with the old men, who had stood before Solomon his father while he was yet alive, saying, "How do you advise me to answer this people?"	6 egli si consigliò cogli anziani che erano stati davanti a Salomone suo padre, mentre egli viveva, e disse loro: « Che consiglio mi date per rispondere al popolo? »
7 And they said to him, "If you will be kind to this people and please them, and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants for ever."	7 Essi gli risposero: « Se ti rendi accetto a que­sto popolo, accondiscendendo con buone parole, ti serviran per sempre ».
8 But he forsook the counsel which the old men gave him, and took counsel with the young men who had grown up with him and stood before him.	8 Ma egli, abbandonato il consiglio dei vecchi, cominciò a trattare coi giovani che erano stati allevati con lui ed erano al suo seguito,
9 And he said to them, "What do you advise that we answer this people who have said to me, 'Lighten the yoke that your father put upon us'?"	9 e disse loro: « Che ve ne pare? che devo rispondere a questo popolo il quale mi ha detto: Alleggerisci il giogo che tuo padre ci ha imposto? ».
10 And the young men who had grown up with him said to him, "Thus shall you speak to the people who said to you, 'Your father made our yoke heavy, but do you lighten it for us'; thus shall you say to them, 'My little finger is thicker than my father's loins.	10 Essi risposero da giovani allevati come lui nelle delizie, e dissero: « Tu dirai a questo popolo che ti ha detto: Il tuo padre aggravò il nostro giogo, tu alleggeriscilo; tu così gli risponderai: Il mio dito mignolo è più grosso dei lombi di mio padre.
11 And now, whereas my father laid upon you a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke. My father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.'"	11 Mio padre vi impose un giogo pesante, ma io lo renderò più pesante che mai; mio padre vi battè colle sferze; io vi strazierò cogli scorpioni ».
12 So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king said, "Come to me again the third day."	12 Venuto adunque Geroboamo con tutto il popolo tre giorni dopo da Roboamo, com'egli aveva ordinato,
13 And the king answered them harshly, and forsaking the counsel of the old men,	13 il re, abbandonato il consiglio dei vecchi, rispose con durezza,
14 King Rehoboam spoke to them according to the counsel of the young men, saying, "My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to it; my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions."	14 e, secondo il parere dei giovani, disse: « Mio padre vi impose un giogo pesante, e io lo aggraverò di più: mio padre vi battè colle sferze, e io vi strazierò cogli scorpioni ».
15 So the king did not hearken to the people; for it was a turn of affairs brought about by God that the LORD might fulfil his word, which he spoke by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.	15 Non si piegò alle preghiere del popolo, perchè Dio voleva che s'adempisse la sua parola, da lui detta per mezzo di Ahia Silonita a Geroboamo figlio di Nabat.
16 And when all Israel saw that the king did not hearken to them, the people answered the king, "What portion have we in David? We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse. Each of you to your tents, O Israel! Look now to your own house, David." So all Israel departed to their tents.	16 Alla dura risposta del re il popolo così rispose: « Non abbiamo alcuna parte con David, nè alcuna eredità col figlio d'Isai: torna alle tue tende, o Israele, e tu, o David, governa la tua casa ». E tutto Israele se ne andò alle sue tende.
17 But Rehoboam reigned over the people of Israel who dwelt in the cities of Judah.	17 Ma sopra i figli d'Israele che abitavano nelle città di Giuda regnò Roboamo.
18 Then King Rehoboam sent Hadoram, who was taskmaster over the forced labor, and the people of Israel stoned him to death with stones. And King Rehoboam made haste to mount his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.	18 Il re Roboamo mandò Aduram che sopraintendeva ai tributi; ma i figli d'Israele lo lapidarono e lo fecero morire. Allora il re Roboamo si affrettò a salire sul suo carro e fuggì a Gerusalemme.
19 So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day.	19 Così Israele è re­stato separato dalla casa di David fino a questo giorno.
