1 Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king.	1 Roboamo andò a Sichem, perché tutti gli Israeliti erano convenuti in Sichem per proclamarlo re.
2 And when Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard of it (for he was in Egypt, whither he had fled from King Solomon), then Jeroboam returned from Egypt.	2 Quando lo seppe, Geroboamo figlio di Nebàt, che era in Egitto dove era fuggito per paura del re Salomone, tornò dall'Egitto.
3 And they sent and called him; and Jeroboam and all Israel came and said to Rehoboam,	3 Lo avevano mandato a chiamare e perciò Geroboamo si presentò con tutto Israele e dissero a Roboamo:
4 "Your father made our yoke heavy. Now therefore lighten the hard service of your father and his heavy yoke upon us, and we will serve you."	4 "Tuo padre ha reso pesante il nostro giogo, ora tu alleggerisci la dura schiavitù di tuo padre e il giogo gravoso, che quegli ci ha imposto, e noi ti serviremo".
5 He said to them, "Come to me again in three days." So the people went away.	5 Rispose loro: "Tornate da me fra tre giorni". Il popolo se ne andò.
6 Then King Rehoboam took counsel with the old men, who had stood before Solomon his father while he was yet alive, saying, "How do you advise me to answer this people?"	6 Il re Roboamo si consigliò con gli anziani, che erano stati al servizio di Salomone suo padre durante la sua vita e domandò: "Che mi consigliate di rispondere a questo popolo?".
7 And they said to him, "If you will be kind to this people and please them, and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants for ever."	7 Gli dissero: "Se oggi ti mostrerai benevolo verso questo popolo, se l'accontenterai e se dirai loro parole gentili, essi saranno tuoi docili sudditi per sempre".
8 But he forsook the counsel which the old men gave him, and took counsel with the young men who had grown up with him and stood before him.	8 Ma quegli trascurò il consiglio datogli dagli anziani e si consultò con i giovani, che erano cresciuti con lui ed erano al suo servizio.
9 And he said to them, "What do you advise that we answer this people who have said to me, 'Lighten the yoke that your father put upon us'?"	9 Domandò loro: "Che mi consigliate di rispondere a questo popolo che mi ha chiesto: Alleggerisci il giogo impostoci da tuo padre?".
10 And the young men who had grown up with him said to him, "Thus shall you speak to the people who said to you, 'Your father made our yoke heavy, but do you lighten it for us'; thus shall you say to them, 'My little finger is thicker than my father's loins.	10 I giovani, che erano cresciuti con lui, gli dissero: "Al popolo che si è rivolto a te dicendo: Tuo padre ha reso pesante il nostro giogo, tu alleggeriscilo! annunzierai: Il mio mignolo è più grosso dei fianchi di mio padre.
11 And now, whereas my father laid upon you a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke. My father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.'"	11 Ora, se mio padre vi ha caricati di un giogo pesante, io renderò ancora più grave il vostro giogo. Mio padre vi ha castigati con fruste, io vi castigherò con flagelli".
12 So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king said, "Come to me again the third day."	12 Geroboamo e tutto il popolo si presentarono a Roboamo il terzo giorno, come aveva ordinato il re quando affermò: "Tornate da me il terzo giorno".
13 And the king answered them harshly, and forsaking the counsel of the old men,	13 Il re rispose loro duramente. Il re Roboamo, respinto il consiglio degli anziani,
14 King Rehoboam spoke to them according to the counsel of the young men, saying, "My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to it; my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions."	14 disse loro secondo il consiglio dei giovani: "Mio padre vi ha imposto un giogo pesante, io lo renderò ancora più grave. Mio padre vi ha castigati con fruste, io vi castigherò con flagelli".
15 So the king did not hearken to the people; for it was a turn of affairs brought about by God that the LORD might fulfil his word, which he spoke by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.	15 Il re non ascoltò il popolo, poiché era disposizione divina che il Signore attuasse la parola che aveva rivolta a Geroboamo, figlio di Nebàt, per mezzo di Achia di Silo.
16 And when all Israel saw that the king did not hearken to them, the people answered the king, "What portion have we in David? We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse. Each of you to your tents, O Israel! Look now to your own house, David." So all Israel departed to their tents.	16 Tutto Israele, visto che il re non li ascoltava, rispose al re: "Che c'è fra noi e Davide? Nulla in comune con il figlio di Iesse! Ognuno alle proprie tende, Israele! Ora pensa alla tua casa, Davide". Tutto Israele se ne andò alle sue tende.
17 But Rehoboam reigned over the people of Israel who dwelt in the cities of Judah.	17 Sugli Israeliti che abitavano nelle città di Giuda regnò Roboamo.
18 Then King Rehoboam sent Hadoram, who was taskmaster over the forced labor, and the people of Israel stoned him to death with stones. And King Rehoboam made haste to mount his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.	18 Il re Roboamo mandò Adoram, sovrintendente ai lavori forzati, ma gli Israeliti lo lapidarono ed egli morì. Il re Roboamo allora salì in fretta sul suo carro e fuggì in Gerusalemme.
19 So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day.	19 Così Israele si ribellò alla casa di Davide; tale situazione dura fino ad oggi.
