Now there happened to be there a worthless fellow, whose name was Sheba, the son of Bichri, a Benjaminite; and he blew the trumpet, and said, "We have no portion in David, and we have no inheritance in the son of Jesse; every man to his tents, O Israel!"1 ܘܐܫܬܘܪܝ ܬܡܢ ܓܒܪܐ ܚܕ ܥܘܠܐ ܘܫܡܗ ܫܡܘܥ ܒܪ ܒܟܪܝ ܡܢ ܒܢܝܡܝܢ ܘܩܪܐ ܒܫܝܦܘܪܐ ܘܐܡܪ.
So all the men of Israel withdrew from David, and followed Sheba the son of Bichri; but the men of Judah followed their king steadfastly from the Jordan to Jerusalem.2 ܘܦܫܘ ܟܠܗܘܢ ܒܢ̈ܝ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܡܢ ܒܬܪ ܕܘܝܕ ܘܐܙܠܘ ܒܬܪ ܫܡܘܥ ܒܪ ܒܟܪܝ ܘܒܢ̈ܝ ܝܗܘܕܐ ܢܩܦܘ ܠܡܠܟܗܘܢ ܡܢ ܝܘܪܕܢܢ ܘܥܕܡܐ ܠܐܘܪܫܠܡ
And David came to his house at Jerusalem; and the king took the ten concubines whom he had left to care for the house, and put them in a house under guard, and provided for them, but did not go in to them. So they were shut up until the day of their death, living as if in widowhood.3 ܘܐܬܐ ܕܘܝܕ ܠܒܝܬܗ ܠܐܘܪܫܠܡ ܘܕܒܪ ܐܢܝ̈ܢ ܡܠܟܐ ܠܥܣܪ̈ ܢܫ̈ܐ ܕܪ̈ܘܟܬܐ ܕܫܒܩ ܗܘܐ ܕܢܛܪ̈ܢ ܒܝܬܗ ܘܚܒܫ ܐ̈ܢܝܢ ܒܒܝܬܐ ܕܢܬܢܛܪ̈ܢ ܘܬܪܣܝ ܐܢ̈ܝܢ ܘܠܐ ܥܠ ܥܠܝܗܝܢ ܘܗ̈ܘܝ ܒܐܘܠܨܢܐ ܥܕܡܐ ܠܝܘܡܐ ܕܡܝܬ ܘܗ̈ܘܝ ܐܪ̈ܡܠܬܐ
Then the king said to Amasa, "Call the men of Judah together to me within three days, and be here yourself."4
So Amasa went to summon Judah; but he delayed beyond the set time which had been appointed him.5 ܘܐܙܠ ܥܡܣܐ ܠܡܘܥܕܘ ܠܕܒܝܬ ܝܗܘܕܐ ܘܐܘܚܪ ܡܢ ܘܥܕܐ ܕܘܥܕܗ
And David said to Abishai, "Now Sheba the son of Bichri will do us more harm than Absalom; take your lord's servants and pursue him, lest he get himself fortified cities, and cause us trouble.
And there went out after Abishai, Joab and the Cherethites and the Pelethites, and all the mighty men; they went out from Jerusalem to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri.7 ܘܢܦܩܘ ܒܬܪܗ ܚܒܪ̈ܘܗܝ ܕܝܘܐܒ ܚܐܪ̈ܐ ܘܦܠܚ̈ܐ ܘܟܠܗܘܢ ܓܒܪ̈ܐ ܘܢܦܩܘ ܡܢ ܐܘܪܫܠܡ ܘܐܙܠܘ ܒܬܪ ܫܡܘܥ ܒܪ ܒܟܪܝ
When they were at the great stone which is in Gibeon, Amasa came to meet them. Now Joab was wearing a soldier's garment, and over it was a girdle with a sword in its sheath fastened upon his loins, and as he went forward it fell out.8 ܗܢܘܢ ܡܛܝܘ ܠܟܐܦܐ ܪܒܬܐ ܕܒܓܒܥܘܢ ܘܥܡܣܐ ܥܠ ܩܕܡܝܗܘܢ ܘܝܘܐܒ ܡܚܙܩ ܒܠܒܘܫܐ ܕܙܝܢܗ ܘܣܦܣܪܐ ܡܨܡܕܐ ܗܘܬ ܘܪܡܝܐ ܒܚ̈ܨܘܗܝ ܐܝܟ ܓܠܒܐ ܘܗܘ ܢܦܩ ܘܢܦܠܬ ܐܝܕܗ ܥܠ ܣܦܣܪܗ
And Joab said to Amasa, "Is it well with you, my brother?" And Joab took Amasa by the beard with his right hand to kiss him.9 ܐܡܪ ܠܗ ܝܘܐܒ ܠܥܡܣܐ ܫܠܡ ܠܟ ܐܚܝ ܘܢܦܠܬ ܐܝܕܗ ܕܝܘܐܒ ܥܠ ܕܩܢܗ ܕܥܡܣܐ ܘܢܫܩܗ
But Amasa did not observe the sword which was in Joab's hand; so Joab struck him with it in the body, and shed his bowels to the ground, without striking a second blow; and he died. Then Joab and Abishai his brother pursued Sheba the son of Bichri.10 ܘܥܡܣܐ ܠܐ ܐܙܕܗܪ ܡܢ ܣܦܣܪܐ ܕܒܐܝܕܗ ܕܝܘܐܒ ܘܡܚܝܗܝ ܒܗ̇ ܥܠ ܦܠܓܗ ܘܢܦܠܘ ܡ̈ܥܘܗܝ ܥܠ ܐܪܥܐ ܘܠܐ ܬܢܝܗܝ ܘܡܝܬ ܘܝܘܐܒ ܘܐܒܝܫܝ ܐܚܘܗܝ ܐܙܠܘ ܒܬܪ ܫܡܘܥ ܒܪ ܒܟܪܝ
And one of Joab's men took his stand by Amasa, and said, "Whoever favors Joab, and whoever is for David, let him follow Joab."11 ܘܓܒܪܐ ܚܕ ܐܙܠ ܘܩܡ ܥܠܘܗܝ ܡܢ ܥܒ̈ܕܘܗܝ ܕܝܘܐܒ ܘܐܡܪ ܠܗ ܡܢ ܡ̇ܢ ܐܢܬ ܡܢ ܕܘܝܕ ܕܒܬܪ ܝܘܐܒ
And Amasa lay wallowing in his blood in the highway. And any one who came by, seeing him, stopped; and when the man saw that all the people stopped, he carried Amasa out of the highway into the field, and threw a garment over him.12 ܘܥܡܣܐ ܡܦܠܦܠ ܗܘܐ ܒܕܡܗ ܘܪܡܐ ܒܫܒܝܠܐ ܘܟܕ ܚܙܐ ܓܒܪܐ ܕܩܡ ܠܗ ܟܠܗ ܥܡܐ ܠܡܚܙܐ ܓܪܗ ܠܥܡܣܐ ܡܢ ܫܒܝܠܐ ܘܐܪܡܝܗ ܒܚܩܠܐ ܘܐܪܡܝ ܥܠܘܗܝ ܡܪܛܘܛܐ ܟܕ ܚܙܐ ܕܟܠ ܡ̇ܢ ܕܥܒ̇ܪ ܥܠܘܗܝ ܩܐܡ ܠܗ
When he was taken out of the highway, all the people went on after Joab to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri.13
And Sheba passed through all the tribes of Israel to Abel of Beth-maacah; and all the Bichrites assembled, and followed him in.14 ܘܥܒܪܘ ܒܟܠܗܘܢ ܫܒ̈ܛܐ ܕܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܒܐܒܠ ܘܒܒܝܬ ܡܥܟܐ ܘܒܟܠ ܒܪ̈ܝܢ ܘܐܙܠܘ ܒܬܪܗ
And all the men who were with Joab came and besieged him in Abel of Beth-maacah; they cast up a mound against the city, and it stood against the rampart; and they were battering the wall, to throw it down.15 ܘܥܠܘ ܘܫܪܘ ܥܠܘܗܝ ܒܐܒܠ ܘܒܒܝܬ ܡܥܟܐ ܘܐܟܡܢܘ ܟܡܐ̈ܢܐ ܥܠ ܩܪܝܬܐ ܘܩܡܬ ܒܐܘܠܨܢܐ ܘܟܠܗ ܥܡܐ ܕܥܡ ܝܘܐܒ ܡܓܪܓܝܢ ܕܢܪܡܘܢܗ ܫܘܪܐ
Then a wise woman called from the city, "Hear! Hear! Tell Joab, 'Come here, that I may speak to you.'"16 ܘܩܪܬ ܐܢܬܬܐ ܚܕܐ ܚܟܝܡܬܐ ܡܢ ܫܘܪܐ ܘܐܡܪܐ ܫܡܥܘ ܫܡܥܘ ܘܐܡܪܘ ܠܝܘܐܒ ܩܪܘܒ ܠܟܐ ܘܐܡܪ ܠܟ
And he came near her; and the woman said, "Are you Joab?" He answered, "I am." Then she said to him, "Listen to the words of your maidservant." And he answered, "I am listening."17 ܘܩܪܒ ܠܘܬܗ̇ ܘܐܡܪܐ ܠܗ ܐܢܬ ܗܘ ܝܘܐܒ ܘܐܡܪ ܠܗ̇ ܐܢܐ ܗܘ ܐܡܪܐ ܠܗ ܫܡܥ ܡ̈ܠܝ ܐܡܬܟ ܐܡܪ ܫܡܥ ܐܢܐ
Then she said, "They were wont to say in old time, 'Let them but ask counsel at Abel'; and so they settled a matter.18 ܐܡܪܐ ܐܢܬܬܐ ܡܐܡܪ ܐܡܪܝܢ ܗܘܘ ܡܢ ܩܕܝܡ ܕܡܫܐܠ ܫܐܠܝܢ ܗܘܘ ܒܢܒ̈ܝܐ ܘܗܝܕܝܢ ܡܘܒܕܝܢ
I am one of those who are peaceable and faithful in Israel; you seek to destroy a city which is a mother in Israel; why will you swallow up the heritage of the LORD?"19 ܐܢܐ ܦܪܥܬ ܚ̈ܘܒܠܐ ܐܢܐ ܕܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܕܒܥܐ ܐܢܬ ܠܡܩܛܠ ܠܛܠܝܐ ܘܠܐܡܗ ܒܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܠܐ ܬܛܒܥ ܝܪܬܘܬܗ ܕܡܪܝܐ
Joab answered, "Far be it from me, far be it, that I should swallow up or destroy!20 ܥܢܐ ܝܘܐܒ ܘܐܡܪ ܠܗ̇ ܚܣ ܠܝ ܠܐ ܐܛܒܥ ܘܠܐ ܐܚܒܠ
That is not true. But a man of the hill country of Ephraim, called Sheba the son of Bichri, has lifted up his hand against King David; give up him alone, and I will withdraw from the city." And the woman said to Joab, "Behold, his head shall be thrown to you over the wall."21 ܠܐ ܗܘܐ ܗܟܢܐ ܐܠܐ ܓܒܪܐ ܚܕ ܡܢ ܛܘܪܐ ܕܐܦܪܝܡ ܫܡܘܥ ܒܪ ܒܟܪܝ ܫܡܗ ܐܘܫܒ ܐ̈ܝܕܝܐ ܥܠ ܡܠܟܐ ܕܘܝܕ ܗܒܘܗܝ ܠܝ ܒܠܚܘܕܘܗܝ ܘܐܙܠ ܠܝ ܡܢ ܩܪܝܬܐ ܐܡܪܐ ܠܗ ܐܢܬܬܐ ܠܝܘܐܒ ܗܫܐ ܢܗܘܐ ܫܕܐ ܠܟ ܪܝܫܗ ܡܢ ܫܘܪܐ
Then the woman went to all the people in her wisdom. And they cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri, and threw it out to Joab. So he blew the trumpet, and they dispersed from the city, every man to his home.
Now Joab was in command of all the army of Israel; and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was in command of the Cherethites and the Pelethites;23 ܘܝܘܐܒ ܥܠ ܟܠܗ ܗܘܐ ܚܝܠܐ ܕܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܘܒܢܝܐ ܒܪ ܝܘܝܕܥ ܥܠ ܚܐܪ̈ܐ ܘܥܠ ܦܠܚ̈ܐ
and Adoram was in charge of the forced labor; and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was the recorder;24 ܘܐܕܘܢܝܪܡ ܥܠ ܡܕܐܬܐ ܘܝܘܫܦܛ ܒܪ ܐܚܝܠܘܕ ܡܥܗܕܢܐ
and Sheva was secretary; and Zadok and Abiathar were priests;25 ܘܫܪܝܐ ܣܦܪܐ ܘܨܕܘܩ ܘܐܒܝܬܪ ܟܗ̈ܢܐ
and Ira the Jairite was also David's priest.26 ܘܐܦ ܥܐܙܐ ܕܡܢ ܝܬܝܪ ܗܘܐ ܟܗܢܐ ܠܕܘܝܕ
