1 And the LORD sent Nathan to David. He came to him, and said to him, "There were two men in a certain city, the one rich and the other poor.	1 Hierauf sandte der HERR (den Propheten) Nathan zu David; als dieser zu ihm gekommen war, redete er so zu ihm: »Es lebten zwei Männer in derselben Stadt, ein reicher und ein armer.
2 The rich man had very many flocks and herds;	2 Der Reiche besaß Kleinvieh und Rinder in großer Menge,
3 but the poor man had nothing but one little ewe lamb, which he had bought. And he brought it up, and it grew up with him and with his children; it used to eat of his morsel, and drink from his cup, and lie in his bosom, and it was like a daughter to him.	3 der Arme aber hatte gar nichts als ein einziges Lämmchen, das er sich gekauft und aufgezogen hatte und das bei ihm und zugleich mit seinen Kindern aufwuchs; es aß von seinem Bissen und trank aus seinem Becher, es schlief an seinem Busen (oder: auf seinem Schoß) und wurde von ihm wie eine Tochter gehalten.
4 Now there came a traveler to the rich man, and he was unwilling to take one of his own flock or herd to prepare for the wayfarer who had come to him, but he took the poor man's lamb, and prepared it for the man who had come to him."	4 Da kam eines Tages Besuch zu dem reichen Mann, und weil es ihm leid tat, ein Stück von seinem eigenen Kleinvieh oder von seinen Rindern zu nehmen, um es für den Besuch, der zu ihm gekommen war, als Mahl zuzubereiten, nahm er das Lämmchen des armen Mannes und richtete es für den Gast zu, der zu ihm gekommen war.«
5 Then David's anger was greatly kindled against the man; and he said to Nathan, "As the LORD lives, the man who has done this deserves to die;	5 Da geriet David in heftigen Zorn gegen den Mann, so daß er zu Nathan sagte: »So wahr der HERR lebt: der Mann, der das getan hat, ist ein Kind des Todes!
6 and he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity."	6 Und das Lamm soll er vierfach erstatten zur Strafe dafür, daß er so gehandelt und weil er kein Mitleid bewiesen hat!«
7 Nathan said to David, "You are the man. Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, 'I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you out of the hand of Saul;	7 Da erwiderte Nathan dem David: »Du bist der Mann! So hat der HERR, der Gott Israels, gesprochen: ›Ich habe dich zum König über Israel gesalbt, und ich habe dich aus Sauls Händen errettet,
8 and I gave you your master's house, and your master's wives into your bosom, and gave you the house of Israel and of Judah; and if this were too little, I would add to you as much more.	8 ich habe dir das Haus deines Herrn gegeben und die Frauen deines Herrn dir in den Schoß gelegt (zur Verfügung gestellt); ich habe dir das Haus Israel und Juda übergeben, und wenn dir das noch zu wenig war, so hätte ich dir noch dies und das hinzugefügt.
9 Why have you despised the word of the LORD, to do what is evil in his sight? You have smitten Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and have taken his wife to be your wife, and have slain him with the sword of the Ammonites.	9 Warum hast du dich über das Gebot des HERRN hinweggesetzt und etwas getan, was ihm mißfällt? Den Hethiter Uria hast du mit dem Schwert erschlagen lassen und sein Weib dir zum Weibe genommen, nachdem du ihn selbst durch das Schwert der Ammoniter hast umbringen lassen.
10 Now therefore the sword shall never depart from your house, because you have despised me, and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.'	10 So soll denn nun das Schwert aus deinem Hause niemals weichen zur Strafe dafür, daß du mich mißachtet und das Weib des Hethiters Uria dir zum Weibe genommen hast!‹
11 Thus says the LORD, 'Behold, I will raise up evil against you out of your own house; and I will take your wives before your eyes, and give them to your neighbor, and he shall lie with your wives in the sight of this sun.	11 So hat der HERR gesprochen: ›Siehe, ich will Unheil über dich aus deinem eigenen Hause hervorgehen lassen und will dir deine Frauen vor deinen Augen wegnehmen und sie einem andern geben, daß er im Angesicht dieser Sonne deinen Frauen beiwohnen soll.
12 For you did it secretly; but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.'"	12 Denn du hast im geheimen gehandelt, ich aber will diese Drohung vor den Augen von ganz Israel und angesichts der Sonne zur Ausführung bringen!‹«
13 David said to Nathan, "I have sinned against the LORD." And Nathan said to David, "The LORD also has put away your sin; you shall not die.	13 Da sagte David zu Nathan: »Ich habe gegen den HERRN gesündigt!« Nathan antwortete dem David: »So hat auch der HERR dir deine Sünde vergeben: du selbst wirst nicht sterben!
14 Nevertheless, because by this deed you have utterly scorned the LORD, the child that is born to you shall die."	14 Doch weil du den Feinden des HERRN durch diese Tat Anlaß zur Lästerung gegeben hast, so soll auch der Sohn, der dir geboren ist, unrettbar sterben!«
15 Then Nathan went to his house. And the LORD struck the child that Uriah's wife bore to David, and it became sick.	15 Als Nathan hierauf nach Hause gegangen war, schlug der HERR das Kind, welches die Frau Urias dem David geboren hatte, so daß es todkrank wurde.
16 David therefore besought God for the child; and David fasted, and went in and lay all night upon the ground.	16 Da suchte David Gott um des Knaben willen (im Heiligtum) auf, und David fastete und brachte, als er heimgekommen war, die ganze Nacht hindurch auf dem Erdboden liegend zu.
17 And the elders of his house stood beside him, to raise him from the ground; but he would not, nor did he eat food with them.	17 Obgleich nun die Ältesten seines Hauses (= seine vornehmsten Hofleute) zu ihm traten, um ihn zum Aufstehen von der Erde zu bewegen, weigerte er sich doch und speiste nicht mit ihnen.
18 On the seventh day the child died. And the servants of David feared to tell him that the child was dead; for they said, "Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spoke to him, and he did not listen to us; how then can we say to him the child is dead? He may do himself some harm."	18 Als das Kind dann am siebten Tage starb, trugen die Hofleute Davids Bedenken, ihm den Tod des Kindes anzuzeigen; denn sie dachten: »Solange das Kind noch am Leben war, hat er unsere Vorstellungen, wenn wir ihm zuredeten, unbeachtet gelassen: wie können wir ihm da jetzt den Tod des Kindes anzeigen? Es gäbe ein Unglück ab!«
19 But when David saw that his servants were whispering together, David perceived that the child was dead; and David said to his servants, "Is the child dead?" They said, "He is dead."	19 Als David aber seine Hofleute miteinander flüstern sah und daran merkte, daß das Kind tot war, fragte er seine Hofleute: »Ist das Kind tot?« Sie antworteten ihm: »Ja, es ist tot.«
20 Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and anointed himself, and changed his clothes; and he went into the house of the LORD, and worshipped; he then went to his own house; and when he asked, they set food before him, and he ate.	20 Da stand David vom Boden auf, wusch und salbte sich und legte die Trauerkleider ab; darauf ging er in das Haus des HERRN und warf sich nieder (oder: betete andächtig). Als er dann in sein Haus zurückgekehrt war, ließ er sich eine Mahlzeit auftragen und aß.
21 Then his servants said to him, "What is this thing that you have done? You fasted and wept for the child while it was alive; but when the child died, you arose and ate food."	21 Da sagten seine Hofleute zu ihm: »Wie unerklärlich ist dein Verhalten! Solange das Kind noch am Leben war, hast du um seinetwillen gefastet und geweint; und jetzt, da das Kind tot ist, stehst du auf und nimmst Nahrung zu dir.«
22 He said, "While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept; for I said, 'Who knows whether the LORD will be gracious to me, that the child may live?'	22 Da antwortete er: »Solange das Kind noch lebte, habe ich gefastet und geweint, weil ich dachte: Wer weiß, vielleicht erbarmt der HERR sich meiner, daß das Kind am Leben bleibt?
23 But now he is dead; why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he will not return to me."	23 Nun es aber tot ist, wozu soll ich da fasten? Kann ich es etwa wieder ins Leben zurückrufen? Ich kann wohl zu ihm kommen, es aber kann nicht wieder zu mir zurückkehren.«
24 Then David comforted his wife, Bathsheba, and went in to her, and lay with her; and she bore a son, and he called his name Solomon. And the LORD loved him,	24 Nachdem David dann seiner Gattin Bathseba Trost zugesprochen und sich ihr wieder in Liebe zugewandt hatte, wurde sie Mutter eines Sohnes, den er Salomo (d.h. Friedreich) nannte und den der HERR liebhatte.
25 and sent a message by Nathan the prophet; so he called his name Jedidiah, because of the LORD.	25 David übergab ihn der Fürsorge (= Erziehung) des Propheten Nathan, der ihm den Namen Jedidjah (d.h. Liebling des Herrn) gab, um des HERRN willen.
26 Now Joab fought against Rabbah of the Ammonites, and took the royal city.	26 Joab aber bestürmte unterdessen Rabba, die Hauptstadt der Ammoniter, und eroberte die Königsstadt.
27 And Joab sent messengers to David, and said, "I have fought against Rabbah; moreover, I have taken the city of waters.	27 Hierauf sandte er Boten an David und ließ ihm sagen: »Ich habe Rabba bestürmt und die Wasserstadt auch erobert;
28 Now, then, gather the rest of the people together, and encamp against the city, and take it; lest I take the city, and it be called by my name."	28 so biete jetzt nun den Rest des Kriegsvolkes auf, belagere die Stadt und erobere sie, damit nicht ich die Stadt einnehme und dann mein Name über ihr ausgerufen wird.«
29 So David gathered all the people together and went to Rabbah, and fought against it and took it.	29 Da bot David seine ganze Heeresmacht auf, zog gegen Rabba, bestürmte die Stadt und eroberte sie.
30 And he took the crown of their king from his head; the weight of it was a talent of gold, and in it was a precious stone; and it was placed on David's head. And he brought forth the spoil of the city, a very great amount.	30 Er nahm dann ihrem Götzen Milkom die Krone vom Haupt, die ein Talent Gold wog und mit einem kostbaren Edelstein besetzt war; der kam nunmehr an (oder: auf) Davids Haupt. Und er führte aus der Stadt eine überaus reiche Beute weg.
31 And he brought forth the people who were in it, and set them to labor with saws and iron picks and iron axes, and made them toil at the brickkilns; and thus he did to all the cities of the Ammonites. Then David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.	31 Die Bevölkerung, die sich dort vorfand, ließ er wegführen und stellte sie als Fronarbeiter an bei den Sägen, bei den eisernen Picken und den eisernen Äxten und ließ sie an den Ziegelöfen arbeiten; ebenso verfuhr er mit allen übrigen Städten der Ammoniter. Dann kehrte David mit dem gesamten Heere nach Jerusalem zurück.
