1 From there Abraham journeyed toward the territory of the Negeb, and dwelt between Kadesh and Shur; and he sojourned in Gerar.	1 Abramo levò le tende di là verso il Negheb. Si stabilì tra Kadesh e Shur, poi soggiornò come straniero a Gerar.
2 And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, "She is my sister." And Abimelech king of Gerar sent and took Sarah.	2 Ora, Abramo. disse di Sara sua moglie: «È mia sorella», onde Abimelech re di Gerar mandò a prendere Sara.
3 But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, "Behold, you are a dead man, because of the woman whom you have taken; for she is a man's wife."	3 Ma Dio venne da Abimelech di notte, in sogno, e gli disse: «Ecco, stai per morire a causa della donna che hai preso, perché essa appartiene a un marito».
4 Now Abimelech had not approached her; so he said, "Lord, wilt thou slay an innocent people?	4 Ora, Abimelech non si era ancora accostato a lei. E disse: «Mio Signore, vuoi far morire la gente anche se è giusta?
5 Did he not himself say to me, 'She is my sister? And she herself said, 'He is my brother.' In the integrity of my heart and the innocence of my hands I have done this."	5 Non è forse stato lui a dirmi: “È mia sorella” e lei stessa, anche lei, ha detto: “È mio fratello”? Con la semplicità del mio cuore e con l’innocenza delle mie mani ho fatto ciò».
6 Then God said to him in the dream, "Yes, I know that you have done this in the integrity of your heart, and it was I who kept you from sinning against me; therefore I did not let you touch her.	6 Gli rispose Dio nel sogno: «Anch’io so che con la semplicità del tuo cuore hai fatto ciò e sono stato ancora io che ti ho impedito di peccare contro di me: perciò non ho permesso che tu la toccassi.
7 Now then restore the man's wife; for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you, and you shall live. But if you do not restore her, know that you shall surely die, you, and all that are yours."	7 Ora restituisci la donna di quest’uomo: egli è un profeta e pregherà per te, così che tu conservi la vita; ma se non la restituisci, sappi che dovrai certamente
8 So Abimelech rose early in the morning, and called all his servants, and told them all these things; and the men were very much afraid.	8 Allora Abimelech si alzò di mattina presto è chiamò tutti i suoi servitori, davanti ai quali riferì tutte queste cose: quegli uomini si impaurirono assai.
9 Then Abimelech called Abraham, and said to him, "What have you done to us? And how have I sinned against you, that you have brought on me and my kingdom a great sin? You have done to me things that ought not to be done."	9 Poi chiamò Abramo e gli disse: «Che cosa ci hai fatto? Quale colpa ho commesso contro di te perché tu abbia attirato su di me e sul mio regno un peccato così grande? Tu hai fatto a mio riguardo azioni che non devono fare!»
10 And Abimelech said to Abraham, "What were you thinking of, that you did this thing?"	10 Poi disse Abimelech ad Abramo: «Che cosa pensavi di fare agendo in tal modo?»
11 Abraham said, "I did it because I thought, There is no fear of God at all in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife.	11 Rispose Abramo: «lo mi sono detto: “Certo non c'è timor di Dio in questo luogo: mi uccideranno a causa di mia moglie”.
12 Besides she is indeed my sister, the daughter of my father but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife.	12 Inoltre essa è veramente mia sorella, figlia di mio padre, ma non figlia di mia madre, ed è divenuta mia moglie.
13 And when God caused me to wander from my father's house, I said to her, 'This is the kindness you must do me: at every place to which we come, say of me, He is my brother.'"	13 Allora, quando Dio mi ha fatto errare lungi dalla casa di mio padre, io le ho detto: “Tu mi farai questo favore: in ogni luogo dove noi arriveremo devi dire di me: È mio fratello”».
14 Then Abimelech took sheep and oxen, and male and female slaves, and gave them to Abraham, and restored Sarah his wife to him.	14 Allora Abimelech prese bestiame minuto è bestiame grosso, schiavi e schiave, li diede ad Abramo e gli restituì la moglie Sara.
15 And Abimelech said, "Behold, my land is before you; dwell where it pleases you."	15 Poi Abimelech disse: «Ecco davanti a te il mio territorio: va’ ad abitare dove pare bene ai tuoi occhi!»
16 To Sarah he said, "Behold, I have given your brother a thousand pieces of silver; it is your vindication in the eyes of all who are with you; and before every one you are righted."	16 E disse a Sara: «Ecco, io do mille pezzi d’argento a tuo fratello: sarà per te come un risarcimento di fronte a tutti coloro che sono con te. Così tu sei riabilitata in tutto».
17 Then Abraham prayed to God; and God healed Abimelech, and also healed his wife and female slaves so that they bore children.	17 Abramo pregò Dio e Dio guarì Abimelech, sua moglie e le sue ancelle, così che poterono ancora generare.
18 For the LORD had closed all the wombs of the house of Abimelech because of Sarah, Abraham's wife.	18 Infatti Jahvè aveva reso sterile ogni matrice della casa di Abimelech, per il fatto di Sara moglie di Abramo.
