1 From there Abraham journeyed toward the territory of the Negeb, and dwelt between Kadesh and Shur; and he sojourned in Gerar.	1 Ábrahám ezután elment onnan Negeb földjére, és letelepedett Kádes és Súr között. Egy darabig Gerárban tartózkodott.
2 And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, "She is my sister." And Abimelech king of Gerar sent and took Sarah.	2 Sáráról, a feleségéről pedig azt mondta: »A húgom ő.« Érte küldött tehát Abimelek, Gerár királya, és elvitette.
3 But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, "Behold, you are a dead man, because of the woman whom you have taken; for she is a man's wife."	3 Isten azonban éjjel álmában eljött Abimelekhez, és azt mondta neki: »Íme, meghalsz az asszony miatt, akit elhozattál, mert az férjnél van.«
4 Now Abimelech had not approached her; so he said, "Lord, wilt thou slay an innocent people?	4 De Abimelek nem érintette még őt. Azt mondta tehát: »Uram, hát gyanútlan és igaz népet ölsz meg?
5 Did he not himself say to me, 'She is my sister? And she herself said, 'He is my brother.' In the integrity of my heart and the innocence of my hands I have done this."	5 Hát nem ő maga mondta nekem: ‘Ő az én húgom?’ És az is azt mondta: ‘Ő az én bátyám!’ Szívem gyanútlanságában, s kezem tisztaságában cselekedtem ezt!«
6 Then God said to him in the dream, "Yes, I know that you have done this in the integrity of your heart, and it was I who kept you from sinning against me; therefore I did not let you touch her.	6 Isten erre azt mondta neki: »Magam is jól tudom, hogy ártatlan szívvel cselekedted, azért óvtalak meg attól, hogy vétkezz ellenem, azért nem engedtem, hogy hozzáérj.
7 Now then restore the man's wife; for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you, and you shall live. But if you do not restore her, know that you shall surely die, you, and all that are yours."	7 Most tehát add vissza az asszonyt a férjének, mert ő próféta. Ő majd imádkozik érted, hogy életben maradj. Ha azonban nem adod vissza, tudd meg, hogy halállal lakolsz, te és minden hozzátartozód!«
8 So Abimelech rose early in the morning, and called all his servants, and told them all these things; and the men were very much afraid.	8 Mihelyt felkelt Abimelek reggel, összehívatta minden szolgáját, s fülük hallatára elbeszélte mindezeket a dolgokat. Erre az emberei mindannyian igen megrémültek.
9 Then Abimelech called Abraham, and said to him, "What have you done to us? And how have I sinned against you, that you have brought on me and my kingdom a great sin? You have done to me things that ought not to be done."	9 Aztán Abimelek hívatta Ábrahámot, és így szólt hozzá: »Mit tettél velünk! Mit vétettem ellened, hogy ilyen nagy bűnt hoztál rám és országomra? Olyan dolgot tettél velem, amit nem lett volna szabad tenned!«
10 And Abimelech said to Abraham, "What were you thinking of, that you did this thing?"	10 Aztán megint kifakadt, és azt mondta: »Mi jutott eszedbe, hogy ezt művelted?«
11 Abraham said, "I did it because I thought, There is no fear of God at all in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife.	11 Ábrahám azt válaszolta: »Azt gondoltam magamban: Hátha nem félik Istent ezen a helyen, és megölnek engem a feleségem miatt.
12 Besides she is indeed my sister, the daughter of my father but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife.	12 Egyébként valóban a húgom ő: lánya az apámnak, csak az anyámnak nem lánya, és én feleségül vettem.
13 And when God caused me to wander from my father's house, I said to her, 'This is the kindness you must do me: at every place to which we come, say of me, He is my brother.'"	13 Amikor azonban Isten kihozott engem apám házából, azt mondtam neki: Azzal mutasd meg szeretetedet irántam, hogy minden helyen, ahová bemegyünk, azt mondod, hogy a bátyád vagyok!«
14 Then Abimelech took sheep and oxen, and male and female slaves, and gave them to Abraham, and restored Sarah his wife to him.	14 Erre Abimelek juhokat és marhákat, rabszolgákat és szolgálókat vett, odaadta azokat Ábrahámnak, és visszaadta neki Sárát, a feleségét.
15 And Abimelech said, "Behold, my land is before you; dwell where it pleases you."	15 Azt mondta neki: »Előttetek van ez a föld: ahol tetszik, ott lakhatsz!«
16 To Sarah he said, "Behold, I have given your brother a thousand pieces of silver; it is your vindication in the eyes of all who are with you; and before every one you are righted."	16 Sárának pedig azt mondta: »Íme, ezer ezüstöt adtam a ‘bátyádnak’: szolgáljon ez neked fátyolként mindazok előtt, akik veled vannak, és mindenki előtt igazoljon téged.«
17 Then Abraham prayed to God; and God healed Abimelech, and also healed his wife and female slaves so that they bore children.	17 Isten azután Ábrahám könyörgésére meggyógyította Abimeleket, a feleségét és a szolgálóit, úgyhogy ismét szülhettek;
18 For the LORD had closed all the wombs of the house of Abimelech because of Sarah, Abraham's wife.	18 az Úr ugyanis bezárta Abimelek egész háza népe méhét Sára, Ábrahám felesége miatt.
