But there was a man related to Elimelech, a powerful man, and very wealthy, named Boaz.1 Elimelec, marido (de Noemi), tinha um parente, homem poderoso e de grandes riquezas, chamado Booz.
And Ruth, the Moabite, said to her mother-in-law, “If you order, I will go into the field and gather the ears of grain which escape the reaping hand, wherever I will find favor with the father of a family, who will be compassionate to me.” She answered her, “Go, my daughter.”2 Rute Moabita disse a sua sogra: Se o mandas, irei ao campo apanhai; as espigas que escapam das mãos dos segadores, onde quer que me acolham favoràvelmente. Ela respondeu-lhe: Vai, minha filha.
And so she went and gathered the ears of grain after the completion of the reaping. But it happened that this field was owned by Boaz, who was of the kindred of Elimelech.3 Foi Rute pois, e apanhava as espigas por detrás dos segadores. Ora aconteceu que aquele campo tinha por dono um homem chamado Booz, que era da familia de Elimelec.
And behold, he came out of Bethlehem and said to the reapers, “The Lord be with you.” They answered him, “May the Lord bless you.”4 E eis que ele chegou de Belém, e disse aos segadores: O Senhor seja convosco. Eles responderam-lhe: O Senhor te abençoe.
And Boaz said to the young man who was in charge of the reapers, “Whose young woman is this?”5 Booz disse para o jovem que tomava sentido nos segadores: De quem é esta moça?
He answered him, “This is the Moabite woman, who came with Naomi, from the land of the Moabites,6 Ele respondeu-lhe: Esta é a Moabita, que veio com Noemi do país do Moab.
and she asked to gather the remnants of the ears of grain, following the steps of the reapers, and from morning until now she has remained in the field, and, indeed, not for one moment has she returned home.”7 Pediu-me que a deixasse apanhar as espigas que ficassem, indo atrás dos segadores; anda no campo desde manhã até agora, e não voltou a casa nem por um momento.
And Boaz said to Ruth, “Listen to me, daughter. Do not go to gather in any other field, nor depart from this place, but join with my young women,8 Booz disse a Rute: Ouve, filha, não vás respigar a outro campo, não te apartes deste lugar, mas junta-te com as minhas moças;
and follow where they reap. For I given orders to my young men, so that no one is to harass you. And so, whenever you are thirsty, go to the vessels, and drink from the waters that the young men also drink.”9 e segue-as por onde tiverem segado. Eu ordenei aos meus criados que nenhum te moleste; também, se tiveres sêde, vai às bilhas e bebe da água de que bebem os meus criados.
She, falling on her face and paying homage on the ground, said to him: “How did this happen to me, that I should find favor before your eyes, and that you would condescend to accept me, a foreign woman?”10 Ela, inclinando o seu rosto e prostrando-se até à terra, disse-lhe: Donde me vem a dita de ter achado graça diante dos teus olhos, e de que te dignasses fazer caso de mim (que sou) uma mulher estrangeira?
He answered her, “Everything has been reported to me, what things you have done for your mother-in-law after the death of your husband, and how you left your parents, and the land in which you were born, and came to a people you did not know before.11 Ele respondeu-lhe: Foi-me contado tudo o que tens feito à tua sogra depois da morte de teu marido, e como deixaste os teus parentes, e a terra onde nasceste, e vieste para um povo que antes não conhecias.
May the Lord repay you for your work, and may you receive a full reward from the Lord, the God of Israel, to whom you have come, and under whose wings you have taken refuge.”12 O Senhor te remunere pelas tuas obras, e recebas uma plena recompensa do Senhor Deus de Israel, para quem vieste, e sob cujas asas te acolheste.
She said, “I have found favor before your eyes, my lord, who has consoled me, and you have spoken to the heart of your handmaid, who is unlike one of your young women.”13 Ela disse: Encontrei graça diante dos teus olhos, ó meu senhor, que me consolaste e falaste ao coração da tua escrava, ainda que eu não seja nem como uma das tuas escravas.
And Boaz said to her, “When mealtime begins, come here, and eat bread, and dip your morsel in the vinegar.” And so she sat beside the reapers, and she piled up parched grain for herself, and she ate and was satisfied, and carried off the leftovers.14 Booz disse-lhe: Quando chegar a hora (de comer), vem aqui, come pão, e molha o teu bocado no vinagre. Ela sentou-se ao lado dos segadores, e (Booz) deu-lhe grão torrado; ela comeu até ficar satisfeita e guardou os sobejos.
And then she arose from there, so as to gather the ears of grain, according to the custom. But Boaz commanded his servants, saying, “If she is even willing to reap with you, do not prevent her,15 Depois levantou-se para colher as espigas segundo o costume. Booz deu esta ordem aos seus servos; Ainda que ela queira segar convosco, não lho embaraceis,
and purposely let fall some from your bundles, and allow them to remain, so that she may gather without blushing, and let no one rebuke her gathering.”16 e de propósito deixai cair algumas espigas das vossas gavelas, deixai que fiquem ali, para que ela as apanhe sem vergonha, e nenhum a repreenda enquanto as apanha.
And so she gathered in the field until evening. And striking and threshing with a staff what she had gathered, she found about the measure of an ephah of barley, that is, three measures.17 Ela pois respigou no campo até à tarde, e, tendo batido com uma vara e sacudido as espigas que tinha colhido, encontrou quase a medida de um efi de cevada, isto é, três alqueires.
Carrying this, she returned into the city and showed it to her mother-in-law. Moreover, she offered it to her and even gave her the leftovers of her food, with which she had been satisfied.18 Carregando com eles, voltou para a cidade o mostrou-os a sua sogra; além disso, tirou para fora, e deu-lhe dos sobejos da sua comida, de que ela se tinha saciado.
And her mother-in-law said to her, “Where have you gathered today, and where have you found work? Blessed is he who took pity on you!” And she informed her with whom she had been working, and she said the man’s name, that he was called Boaz.19 Sua sogra disse-lhe: Onde respigaste hoje, onde trabalhaste? Abençoado seja quem se compadeceu de ti. Ela declarou-lhe em que propriedade tinha trabalhado, dizendo-lhe que o dono se chamava Booz.
Naomi answered her, “May he be blessed by the Lord, because the same kindness which he provided for the living, he also kept for the dead.” And again she said: “This man is our near relative.”20 Noemi respondeu-lhe: Abençoado seja ele do Senhor, porque a mesma bondade que teve pelos vivos, a conservou também pelos mortos. E acrescentou: Este homem é nosso parente.
And Ruth said, “He charged me with this also, that from now on I should join with his reapers until all the crop has been reaped.”21 Rute disse: Ele deu-me também ordem de me juntar aos seus segadores, até que se acabasse toda a ceifa.
And her mother-in-law said to her, “It is better, my daughter, to go out reaping with his young women, lest in a stranger’s field someone may confront you.”22 A sogra respondeu-lhe: É melhor minha filha que vás cegar entre as moças desse homem, para que noutro campo ninguém te moleste.
And so, she joined with the young women of Boaz, and from then on reaped with them, until the barley and the wheat were stored in the barns.23 Ela pois incorporou-se com as moças de Booz, e respigou entre elas, até que a cevada e o trigo se recolheram nos celtiros.
