But there was a man related to Elimelech, a powerful man, and very wealthy, named Boaz.1 Tenía Noemí por parte de su marido un pariente de buena posición, de la familia de Elimélek, llamado Booz.
And Ruth, the Moabite, said to her mother-in-law, “If you order, I will go into the field and gather the ears of grain which escape the reaping hand, wherever I will find favor with the father of a family, who will be compassionate to me.” She answered her, “Go, my daughter.”2 Rut la moabita dijo a Noemí: «Déjame ir al campo a espigar detrás de aquél a cuyos ojos halle gracia»; ella respondió: «Vete, hija mía».
And so she went and gathered the ears of grain after the completion of the reaping. But it happened that this field was owned by Boaz, who was of the kindred of Elimelech.3 Fue ella y se puso a espigar en el campo detrás de los segadores, y quiso su suerte que fuera a dar en una parcela de Booz, el de la familia de Elimélek.
And behold, he came out of Bethlehem and said to the reapers, “The Lord be with you.” They answered him, “May the Lord bless you.”4 Llegaba entonces Booz de Belén y dijo a los segadores: «Yahveh con vosotros». Le respondieron: «Que Yahveh te bendiga».
And Boaz said to the young man who was in charge of the reapers, “Whose young woman is this?”5 Preguntó Booz al criado que estaba al frente de los segadores: «¿De quién es esta muchacha?»
He answered him, “This is the Moabite woman, who came with Naomi, from the land of the Moabites,6 El criado que estaba al frente de los segadores dijo: «Es la joven moabita que vino con Noemí de los campos de Moab.
and she asked to gather the remnants of the ears of grain, following the steps of the reapers, and from morning until now she has remained in the field, and, indeed, not for one moment has she returned home.”7 Ella dijo: “Permitidme, por favor, espigar y recoger detrás de los segadores.” Ha venido y ha permanecido en pie desde la mañana hasta ahora».
And Boaz said to Ruth, “Listen to me, daughter. Do not go to gather in any other field, nor depart from this place, but join with my young women,8 Booz dijo a Rut: «¿Me oyes, hija mía? No vayas a espigar a otro campo ni te alejes de aquí; quédate junto a mis criados.
and follow where they reap. For I given orders to my young men, so that no one is to harass you. And so, whenever you are thirsty, go to the vessels, and drink from the waters that the young men also drink.”9 Fíjate en la parcela que sieguen y vete detrás de ellos. ¿No he mandado a mis criados que no te molesten? Si tienes sed vete a las vasijas y bebe de lo que saquen del pozo los criados».
She, falling on her face and paying homage on the ground, said to him: “How did this happen to me, that I should find favor before your eyes, and that you would condescend to accept me, a foreign woman?”10 Cayó ella sobre su rostro y se postró en tierra y le dijo: «¿Cómo he hallado gracia a tus ojos para que te fijes en mí, que no soy más que una extranjera?»
He answered her, “Everything has been reported to me, what things you have done for your mother-in-law after the death of your husband, and how you left your parents, and the land in which you were born, and came to a people you did not know before.11 Booz le respondió: «Me han contado al detalle todo lo que hiciste con tu suegra después de la muerte de tu marido, y cómo has dejado a tu padre y a tu madre y la tierra en que naciste, y has venido a un pueblo que no conocías ni ayer ni anteayer.
May the Lord repay you for your work, and may you receive a full reward from the Lord, the God of Israel, to whom you have come, and under whose wings you have taken refuge.”12 Que Yahveh te recompense tu obra y que tu recompensa sea colmada de parte de Yahveh, Dios de Israel, bajo cuyas alas has venido a refugiarte».
She said, “I have found favor before your eyes, my lord, who has consoled me, and you have spoken to the heart of your handmaid, who is unlike one of your young women.”13 Ella dijo: «Halle yo gracia a tus ojos, mi señor, pues me has consolado y has hablado al corazón de tu sierva, cuando yo no soy ni siquiera como una de tus siervas».
And Boaz said to her, “When mealtime begins, come here, and eat bread, and dip your morsel in the vinegar.” And so she sat beside the reapers, and she piled up parched grain for herself, and she ate and was satisfied, and carried off the leftovers.14 A la hora de la comida, Booz le dijo: «Acércate aquí, puedes comer pan y mojar tu bocado en el vinagre». Ella se sentó junto a los segadores, y él le ofreció un puñado de grano tostado. Comió ella hasta saciarse y aun le sobró.
And then she arose from there, so as to gather the ears of grain, according to the custom. But Boaz commanded his servants, saying, “If she is even willing to reap with you, do not prevent her,15 Cuando se levantó ella para seguir espigando, Booz ordenó a sus criados: «Dejadla espigar también entre las gavillas y no la molestéis.
and purposely let fall some from your bundles, and allow them to remain, so that she may gather without blushing, and let no one rebuke her gathering.”16 Sacad incluso para ella espigas de las gavillas y dejadlas caer para que las espigue, y no la riñáis».
And so she gathered in the field until evening. And striking and threshing with a staff what she had gathered, she found about the measure of an ephah of barley, that is, three measures.17 Estuvo espigando en el campo hasta el atardecer y, cuando desgranó lo que había espigado, había como una medida de cebada.
Carrying this, she returned into the city and showed it to her mother-in-law. Moreover, she offered it to her and even gave her the leftovers of her food, with which she had been satisfied.18 Ella se lo llevó y entró en la ciudad, y su suegra vio lo que había espigado. Sacó lo que le había sobrado después de haberse saciado y se lo dio.
And her mother-in-law said to her, “Where have you gathered today, and where have you found work? Blessed is he who took pity on you!” And she informed her with whom she had been working, and she said the man’s name, that he was called Boaz.19 Su suegra le dijo: «¿Dónde has estado espigando hoy y qué has hecho? ¡Bendito sea el que se ha fijado en ti!» Ella contó a su suegra con quién había estado trabajando y añadió: «El hombre con quien he trabajado hoy se llama Booz».
Naomi answered her, “May he be blessed by the Lord, because the same kindness which he provided for the living, he also kept for the dead.” And again she said: “This man is our near relative.”20 Noemí dijo a su nuera: «Bendito sea Yahveh que no deja de mostrar su bondad hacia los vivos y los muertos». Le dijo Noemí: «Ese hombre es nuestro pariente, es uno de los que tienen derecho de rescate sobre nosotros».
And Ruth said, “He charged me with this also, that from now on I should join with his reapers until all the crop has been reaped.”21 Dijo Rut a su suegra: «Hasta me ha dicho: Quédate con mis criados hasta que hayan acabado toda mi cosecha».
And her mother-in-law said to her, “It is better, my daughter, to go out reaping with his young women, lest in a stranger’s field someone may confront you.”22 Dijo Noemí a Rut su nuera: «Es mejor que salgas con sus criados, hija mía, así no te molestarán en otro campo».
And so, she joined with the young women of Boaz, and from then on reaped with them, until the barley and the wheat were stored in the barns.23 Se quedó, pues, con los criados de Booz para espigar hasta que acabó la recolección de la cebada y la recolección del trigo, y siguió viviendo con su suegra.
