For I do not want you to be ignorant, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and they all went across the sea.1 I want you to be quite certain, brothers, that our ancestors al had the cloud over them and al passedthrough the sea.
And in Moses, they all were baptized, in the cloud and in the sea.2 In the cloud and in the sea they were all baptised into Moses;
And they all ate of the same spiritual food.3 al ate the same spiritual food
And they all drank of the same spiritual drink. And so, they all were drinking of the spiritual rock seeking to obtain them; and that rock was Christ.4 and al drank the same spiritual drink, since they drank from the spiritual rock which fol owed them,and that rock was Christ.
But with most of them, God was not well-pleased. For they were struck down in the desert.5 In spite of this, God was not pleased with most of them, and their corpses were scattered over thedesert.
Now these things were done as an example for us, so that we might not desire evil things, just as they desired.6 Now these happenings were examples, for our benefit, so that we should never set our hearts, as theydid, on evil things;
And so, do not take part in idolatry, as some of them did, just as it was written: “The people sat down to eat and to drink, and then they rose up to amuse themselves.”7 nor are you to worship false gods, as some of them did, as it says in scripture: The people sat down toeat and drink, and afterwards got up to amuse themselves.
And let us not commit fornication, as some of them fornicated, and so twenty-three thousand fell on one day.8 Nor, again, are we to fall into sexual immorality; some of them did this, and twenty-three thousand mettheir downfal in one day.
And let us not tempt Christ, as some of them tempted, and so they perished by serpents.9 And we are not to put the Lord to the test; some of them put him to the test, and they were killed bysnakes.
And you should not murmur, as some of them murmured, and so they perished by the destroyer.10 Never complain; some of them complained, and they were killed by the Destroyer.
Now all of these things happened to them as an example, and so they have been written for our correction, because the final age has fallen upon us.11 Now all these things happened to them by way of example, and they were described in writing to bea lesson for us, to whom it has fallen to live in the last days of the ages.
And so, whosoever considers himself to be standing, let him be careful not to fall.12 Everyone, no matter how firmly he thinks he is standing, must be careful he does not fall.
Temptation should not take hold of you, except what is human. For God is faithful, and he will not permit you to be tempted beyond your ability. Instead, he will effect his Providence, even during temptation, so that you may be able to bear it.13 None of the trials which have come upon you is more than a human being can stand. You can trustthat God wil not let you be put to the test beyond your strength, but with any trial will also provide a way out byenabling you to put up with it.
Because of this, most beloved of mine, flee from the worship of idols.14 For that reason, my dear friends, have nothing to do with the worship of false gods.
Since I am speaking to those who are prudent, judge what I say for yourselves.15 I am talking to you as sensible people; weigh up for yourselves what I have to say.
The cup of benediction that we bless, is it not a communion in the Blood of Christ? And the bread that we break, is it not a participation in the Body of the Lord?16 The blessing-cup, which we bless, is it not a sharing in the blood of Christ; and the loaf of bread which we break, is it not a sharing in the body of Christ?
Through the one bread, we, though many, are one body: all of us who are partakers of the one bread.17 And as there is one loaf, so we, although there are many of us, are one single body, for we all sharein the one loaf.
Consider Israel, according to the flesh. Are not those who eat from the sacrifices partakers of the altar?18 Now compare the natural people of Israel: is it not true that those who eat the sacrifices share thealtar?
What is next? Should I say that what is immolated to idols is anything? Or that the idol is anything?19 What does this mean? That the dedication of food to false gods amounts to anything? Or that falsegods themselves amount to anything?
But the things that the Gentiles immolate, they immolate to demons, and not to God. And I do not want you to become partakers with demons.20 No, it does not; simply that when pagans sacrifice, what is sacrificed by them is sacrificed to demonswho are not God. I do not want you to share with demons.
You cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of demons. You cannot be partakers of the table of the Lord, and partakers of the table of demons.21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons as wel ; you cannot have a share at theLord's table and the demons' table as wel .
Or should we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he is? All is lawful to me, but not all is expedient.22 Do we real y want to arouse the Lord's jealousy; are we stronger than he is?
All is lawful to me, but not all is edifying.23 'Everything is permissible'; maybe so, but not everything does good. True, everything is permissible,but not everything builds people up.
Let no one seek for himself, but for others.24 Nobody should be looking for selfish advantage, but everybody for someone else's.
Whatever is sold in the market, you may eat, without asking questions for the sake of conscience.25 Eat anything that is sold in butchers' shops; there is no need to ask questions for conscience's sake,
“The earth and all its fullness belong to the Lord.”26 since To the Lord belong the earth and all it contains.
If you are invited by any unbelievers, and you are willing to go, you may eat whatever is set before you, without asking questions for the sake of conscience.27 If an unbeliever invites you to a meal, go if you want to, and eat whatever is put before you; you neednot ask questions of conscience first.
But if anyone says, “This has been sacrificed to idols,” do not eat it, for the sake of the one who told you, and for the sake of conscience.28 But if someone says to you, 'This food has been offered in sacrifice,' do not eat it, out ofconsideration for the person that told you, for conscience's sake-
But I am referring to the conscience of the other person, not to yours. For why should my liberty be judged by the conscience of another?29 not your own conscience, I mean, but the other person's. Why should my freedom be governed bysomebody else's conscience?
If I partake with thanksgiving, why should I be slandered over that for which I give thanks?30 Provided that I accept it with gratitude, why should I be blamed for eating food for which I givethanks?
Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever else you may do, do everything for the glory of God.31 Whatever you eat, then, or drink, and whatever else you do, do it al for the glory of God.
Be without offense toward the Jews, and toward the Gentiles, and toward the Church of God,32 Never be a cause of offence, either to Jews or to Greeks or to the Church of God,
just as I also, in all things, please everyone, not seeking what is best for myself, but what is best for many others, so that they may be saved.33 just as I try to accommodate everybody in everything, not looking for my own advantage, but for theadvantage of everybody else, so that they may be saved.
