Deuteronomy 4

1 “And now, O Israel, listen to the precepts and judgments which I am teaching to you, so that, by doing these, you may live, and you may enter and possess the land, which the Lord, the God of your fathers, will give to you.	1 «Ascolta, ora, Israele, gli statuti e i decreti che sto per insegnarvi affinché li mettiate in pratica: in tale modo vivrete, entrerete e prenderete possesso della terra che Jahvè, Dio dei vostri padri, sta per darvi.
2 You shall not add to the word which I speak to you, neither shall you take away from it. Preserve the commandments of the Lord your God which I am teaching to you.	2 Non aggiungerete nulla a quanto vi sto ordinando e non sottrarrete nulla, ma osserverete i precetti di Jahvè vostro Dio, che vi sto ordinando.
3 Your eyes have seen all that the Lord has done against Baal-peor, in what manner he has crushed all of his worshippers from among you.	3 I vostri occhi vedono quanto ha fatto Jahvè vostro Dio a Baal-Peor: Jahvè tuo Dio ha sterminato da te chiunque ha seguito Baal-Peor.
4 But you who adhere to the Lord your God are all still alive, to the present day.	4 Ma voi, fedeli a Jahvè vostro Dio, oggi siete tutti vivi.
5 You know that I have taught you precepts as well as justices, just as the Lord my God has commanded me. And so shall you do in the land that you will possess.	5 Vedi, come mi ha ordinato Jahvè mio Dio, vi ho insegnato statuti e decreti affinché li mettiate in pratica nella terra dove state per entrare e prendere possesso.
6 And you shall observe and fulfill these in practice. For this is your wisdom and understanding in the sight of the peoples, so that, upon hearing all these precepts, they may say: ‘Lo, a wise and understanding people, a great nation.’	6 Osservateli ed eseguiteli: in essi, infatti, sta la vostra saggezza e il vostro senno agli occhi dei popoli. Quando udranno tutti questi statuti, esclameranno: “Non c’è alcun popolo così saggio e assennato; questa è realmente una grande nazione”.
7 Neither is there any other nation so great, which has its gods so near to them, as our God is present to all our petitions.	7 Difatti, qual è quella grande nazione che abbia gli dèi così vicini a sé, come è vicino a noi Jahvè nostro Dio quando lo invochiamo?
8 For what other nation is there so renowned as to have ceremonies, and just judgments, and the entire law that I will set forth today before your eyes?	8 Qual è quella grande nazione che abbia statuti e decreti così giusti come tutta questa legge che oggi vi presento?
9 And so, guard yourself and your soul carefully. You should not forget the words that your eyes have seen, and do not let them be cut away from your heart, throughout all the days of your life. You shall teach them to your sons and to your grandsons,	9 Ma sta attento, guardati bene dal dimenticare gli avvenimenti che i tuoi occhi hanno visto, e non permettere che escano dal tuo cuore in nessun giorno della tua vita; insegnali, anzi, ai tuoi figli e ai figli dei tuoi figli.
10 from the day on which you stood before the Lord your God at Horeb, when the Lord spoke to me, saying: ‘Gather the people to me, so that they may listen to my words, and may learn to fear me, throughout all the time that they are alive on earth, and so that they may teach their children.’	10 Il giorno in cui all’Horeb sei stato alla presenza di Jahvè tuo Dio, quando Jahvè mi ha detto: “Radunami il popolo e farò sentire loro le mie parole, affinché imparino a temermi per tutti i giorni della loro vita sulla terra e le insegnino ai loro figli”,
11 And you approached the base of the mountain, which was burning even toward heaven. And there was a darkness upon it, and a cloud, and a mist.	11 voi vi siete avvicinati, mantenendovi alle falde della montagna: il monte avvampava di fiamme che salivano verso il centro del cielo con tenebre, nuvole e nembi.
12 And the Lord spoke to you from the midst of fire. You heard the voice of his words, but you did not see any form at all.	12 In mezzo al fuoco, Jahvè vi ha parlato: udivate il suono delle parole senza vedere nessuna figura. Si udiva soltanto una voce.
13 And he revealed his covenant to you, which he instructed you to carry out, and the ten words which he wrote on two tablets of stone.	13 Jahvè vi ha rivelato la sua alleanza ordinandovi di eseguirla: le dieci parole che aveva scritto su due tavole di pietra.
14 And he commanded me, at that time, that I should teach you the ceremonies and judgments which you must carry out, in the land that you shall possess.	14 Nello stesso tempo, mi ha ordinato di insegnarvi statuti e decreti che dovrete eseguire nella terra dove state per entrare e prendere possesso.
15 And so, guard your souls carefully. You saw no likeness on the day that the Lord God spoke to you on Horeb from the midst of fire.	15 Riflettete bene in voi stessi: nel giorno in cui Jahvè, all’Horeb, vi ha parlato in mezzo al fuoco, non avete visto nessuna figura;
16 Otherwise, perhaps being deceived, you might have made a graven image, or an image of male or female,	16 state attenti quindi a non prevaricare facendovi una figura scolpita di qualsiasi genere: immagine di maschio o di femmina,
17 a likeness of any of the beasts, which are upon the earth, or of birds, which fly under heaven,	17 immagine di un qualsiasi animale terrestre, immagine di un qualsiasi uccello che vola nel cielo,
18 or of reptiles, which move across the earth, or of fish, which abide in the waters under the earth.	18 immagine di un qualsiasi rettile che striscia sul suolo, immagine di un qualsiasi pesce che si trova nell’acqua, sotto la terra.
19 Otherwise, perhaps lifting up your eyes to heaven, you might look upon the sun and the moon and all the stars of heaven, and being deceived by error, you might adore and worship these things, which the Lord your God created for the service of all the nations, which are under heaven.	19 Quando alzerai gli occhi verso il cielo e vedrai il sole, la luna, le stelle, cioè tutto l’esercito del cielo, non lasciarti trascinare, non prostrarti innanzi a essi e non rendere loro un culto: Jahvè tuo Dio li diede in sorte a tutti i popoli che sono sotto il cielo.
20 But the Lord has taken you up, and led you away from the iron furnaces of Egypt, in order to have a people of inheritance, just as it is to the present day.	20 Ma voi siete stati presi da Jahvè e fatti uscire dal crogiuolo di ferro, dall’Egitto, affinché diveniste un popolo di sua speciale proprietà, come siete oggi.
21 And the Lord became angry against me because of your words, and he swore that I would not cross over the Jordan, nor enter into the excellent land, which he will give to you.	21 Per vostra causa, Jahvè si è irritato contro di me: ha giurato che io non passerò il Giordano né entrerò nella buona terra che egli tuo Dio sta per darti in eredità.
22 Behold, I shall die on this soil. I shall not cross over the Jordan. You shall cross it, and you shall possess the singular land.	22 Sì, io morirò nella terra in cui siamo, non passerò il Giordano. Voi, invece, state per passare e prendere possesso di quella buona terra.
23 Be careful, lest you at sometime forget the covenant of the Lord your God, which he has formed with you, and lest you make for yourselves a graven likeness of those things which the Lord has prohibited to be made.	23 Guardatevi dal dimenticare l’alleanza che Jahvè vostro Dio ha stretto con voi, e dal farvi una figura scolpita di qualsiasi genere, contrariamente a quanto ti ha ordinato Jahvè tuo Dio.
24 For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.	24 Poiché Jahvè tuo Dio è un fuoco divoratore, un Dio geloso.
25 When you will have conceived sons and grandsons while abiding in the land, and if, having been deceived, you make for yourselves any likeness, accomplishing evil in the sight of the Lord your God, so as to provoke him to wrath,	25 Per quando avrete avuto figli e nipoti e sarete invecchiati sulla terra, per quando avrete prevaricato, per quando vi farete una figura scolpita di qualsiasi genere, per quando farete ciò che è male agli occhi di Jahvè tuo Dio, rattristandolo,
26 I call heaven and earth as witnesses this day, that you shall quickly perish from the land, which, when you have crossed over the Jordan, you will possess. You will not live in it for a long time; instead, the Lord will destroy you.	26 oggi prendo il cielo e la terra a testimoni contro di voi: è certo che scomparirete rapidamente dalla terra di cui state per prendere possesso attraversando il Giordano. Non avrete più lunghi giorni su di essa, sarete completamente annientati.
27 And he will scatter you among all the nations, and few of you will remain among those nations, to which the Lord will lead you.	27 Jahvè vi disperderà tra le nazioni; in mezzo a quelle nazioni tra le quali Jahvè vi avrà condotto, di voi non resterà che un piccolo numero.
28 And there, you will serve gods which were fabricated by the hands of men: gods of wood and of stone, who neither see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell.	28 Là renderete un culto a divinità che sono opera di mani umane, divinità di legno e di pietra che non vedono, non odono, non mangiano, non fiutano.
29 And when you will seek the Lord your God in that place, you shall find him, if only you seek him with all your heart, and in all the tribulation of your soul.	29 Di là tu cercherai Jahvè tuo Dio e lo troverai; purché ti rivolga a lui con tutto il cuore e con tutta l’anima.
30 After all these things which have been foretold have found you, in the end time, you shall return to the Lord your God, and you will hear his voice.	30 Nella tua miseria, ti colpiranno tutte queste cose, ma negli ultimi giorni ritornerai a Jahvè tuo Dio e ascolterai la sua voce.
31 For the Lord your God is a merciful God. He will not abandon you, nor will he entirely destroy you, nor will he forget the covenant, which he swore to your fathers.	31 Poiché Jahvè tuo Dio è un Dio misericordioso; non ti abbandonerà, non ti distruggerà né dimenticherà l’alleanza che ha giurato ai tuoi padri.
32 Inquire concerning the days of antiquity, which were before you, from the day when God created man upon the earth, from one end of heaven to another, if anything similar has ever occurred, or whether any such thing has ever been known,	32 Interroga, infatti, i tempi antichi che ti precedettero dal giorno in cui Dio creò l’uomo sulla terra: da un’estremità del cielo all’altra è mai avvenuta una cosa grande come questa? Si è sentito mai qualcosa di simile?
33 that a people would hear the voice of God, speaking from the midst of fire, just as you have heard it, and live,	33 C’è forse un popolo che abbia udito la voce del Dio vivo che parla di mezzo al fuoco, come hai udito tu, e sia rimasto in vita?
34 whether God has acted so as to enter and take for himself a nation from the midst of the nations, by means of tests, signs, and wonders, by means of fighting, and a strong hand, and an outstretched arm, and terrible visions, in accord with all the things which the Lord your God has accomplished for you in Egypt, in the sight of your eyes.	34 Ha mai provato un Dio a venire a prendersi una nazione in mezzo a un’altra nazione, con prove, segni, prodigi, lotte, con mano forte, braccio teso e grandi terrori, tutte cose che Jahvè vostro Dio ha compiuto per voi in Egitto innanzi ai vostri occhi?
35 So may you know that the Lord himself is God, and there is no other beside him.	35 A te è stato concesso di vedere tutto ciò affinché sappia che Jahvè è il vero Dio: all’infuori di lui non ce né altri.
36 He has caused you to hear his voice from heaven, so that he might teach you. And he showed you his exceedingly great fire on earth, and you heard his words from the midst of the fire.	36 Dal cielo ti ha fatto sentire la voce per formarti; sulla terra ti ha mostrato il suo grande fuoco e di mezzo al fuoco hai udito le sue parole.
37 For he loved your fathers, and he chose their offspring after them. And he led you away from Egypt, advancing before you with his great power,	37 Perché ha amato i tuoi padri ha scelto dopo di essi la loro posterità; ti ha fatto uscire dall’Egitto manifestando la sua presenza e il suo grande potere,
38 so as to wipe away, upon your arrival, nations, very great and stronger than you, and so as to lead you in, and to present to you their land as a possession, just as you discern in the present day.	38 per cacciare innanzi a te nazioni più grandi e potenti di te, per farti entrare e concederti la loro terra in eredità, come è ancora oggi.
39 Therefore, know on this day and consider in your heart, that the Lord himself is God in heaven above, and on earth below, and there is no other.	39 Oggi dunque devi conoscere e meditare in cuor tuo che Jahvè è il vero Dio nell’alto dei cieli e, qui, in basso sulla terra; nessun altro.
40 Keep his precepts and commandments, which I am teaching to you, so that it may be well with you, and with your sons after you, and so that you may remain for a long time upon the land, which the Lord your God will give to you.”	40 Osserva i suoi statuti e i suoi ordinamenti che oggi ti prescrivo e sarai felice tu e i tuoi figli dopo di te e avrai lunga vita sul suolo che Jahvè tuo Dio ti concede per sempre».
41 Then Moses set aside three cities, across the Jordan toward the eastern region,	41 Allora Mosè scelse tre città al di là del Giordano, a oriente,
42 so that anyone might flee to these if he has killed his neighbor unwillingly, who was not his enemy a day or two earlier, and so that he would be able to escape to one of these cities:	42 dove potesse trovare rifugio l’omicida che aveva ucciso il suo prossimo inavvertitamente, senza che prima avesse avuto odio contro di lui, affinché rifugiandosi in una di queste città potesse salvare la vita.
43 Bezer in the wilderness, which is situated in the plains of the tribe of Ruben; and Ramoth in Gilead, which is in the tribe of Gad; and Golan in Bashan, which is in the tribe of Manasseh.	43 Esse sono per i Rubeniti, Bezer, nel deserto, nella regione dell’Altipiano; Ramot di Galaad per i Gaditi; Golan, in Bashan, per i Manassiti.
44 This is the law, which Moses set forth before the sons of Israel.	44 Questa è la legge che Mosè diede ai figli di Israele.
45 And these are the testimonies and ceremonies as well as judgments, which he spoke to the sons of Israel, when they departed from Egypt,	45 Queste le istruzioni, gli statuti e i decreti che Mosè espose ai figli di Israele quando uscirono dall’Egitto,
46 across the Jordan, in the valley opposite the shrine of Peor, in the land of Sihon, the king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon, whom Moses struck down. Accordingly, the sons of Israel, having departed from Egypt,	46 al di là del Giordano, nella valle di fronte a Bet-Peor, nella terra di Sikhon re degli Amorrei, che abitava a Kheshbon e che Mosè e i figli di Israele avevano battuto quando uscirono dall’Egitto.
47 possessed his land, and the land of Og, the king of Bashan, the land of the two kings of the Amorites, who were beyond the Jordan, toward the rising of the sun:	47 Si impadronirono così della sua terra come pure della terra di Og re di Bashan. Due re degli Amorrei che erano al di là del Giordano, a oriente:
48 from Aroer, which is situated above the bank of the torrent Arnon, as far as Mount Zion, which is also called Hermon,	48 da Aroer, sul margine superiore del torrente Arnon fino al monte Sion, cioè l’Hermon,
49 the entire plain across the Jordan, from its eastern region, as far as the sea of the wilderness, and even to the base of Mount Pisgah.	49 e tutta l’Araba al di là del Giordano, a oriente, fino al Mare dell’Araba sotto le falde del Pisga.
