Luke 13

1 And there were present, at that very time, some who were reporting about the Galileans, whose blood Pilate mixed with their sacrifices.	1 It was just about this time that some people arrived and told him about the Galileans whose bloodPilate had mingled with that of their sacrifices. At this he said to them,
2 And responding, he said to them: “Do you think that these Galileans must have sinned more than all other Galileans, because they suffered so much?	2 'Do you suppose that these Galileans were worse sinners than any others, that this should havehappened to them?
3 No, I tell you. But unless you repent, you will all perish similarly.	3 They were not, I tel you. No; but unless you repent you wil al perish as they did.
4 And those eighteen upon whom the tower of Siloam fell and killed them, do you think that they also were greater transgressors than all the men living in Jerusalem?	4 Or those eighteen on whom the tower at Siloam fel , kil ing them al ? Do you suppose that they weremore guilty than al the other people living in Jerusalem?
5 No, I tell you. But if you do not repent, you will all perish similarly.”	5 They were not, I tel you. No; but unless you repent you wil al perish as they did.'
6 And he also told this parable: “A certain man had a fig tree, which was planted in his vineyard. And he came seeking fruit on it, but found none.	6 He told this parable, 'A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came looking for fruit on itbut found none.
7 Then he said to the cultivator of the vineyard: ‘Behold, for these three years I came seeking fruit on this fig tree, and I have found none. Therefore, cut it down. For why should it even occupy the land?’	7 He said to his vinedresser, "For three years now I have been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree andfinding none. Cut it down: why should it be taking up the ground?"
8 But in response, he said to him: ‘Lord, let it be for this year also, during which time I will dig around it and add fertilizer.	8 "Sir," the man replied, "leave it one more year and give me time to dig round it and manure it:
9 And, indeed, it should bear fruit. But if not, in the future, you shall cut it down.’ ”	9 it may bear fruit next year; if not, then you can cut it down." '
10 Now he was teaching in their synagogue on the Sabbaths.	10 One Sabbath day he was teaching in one of the synagogues,
11 And behold, there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity for eighteen years. And she was bent over; and she was unable to look upwards at all.	11 and there before him was a woman who for eighteen years had been possessed by a spirit thatcrippled her; she was bent double and quite unable to stand upright.
12 And when Jesus saw her, he called her to himself, and he said to her, “Woman, you are released from your infirmity.”	12 When Jesus saw her he cal ed her over and said, 'Woman, you are freed from your disability,'
13 And he laid his hands upon her, and immediately she was straightened, and she glorified God.	13 and he laid his hands on her. And at once she straightened up, and she glorified God.
14 Then, as a result, the ruler of the synagogue became angry that Jesus had cured on the Sabbath, and he said to the crowd: “There are six days on which you ought to work. Therefore, come and be cured on those, and not on the day of the Sabbath.”	14 But the president of the synagogue was indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, and headdressed all those present saying, 'There are six days when work is to be done. Come and be healed on one ofthose days and not on the Sabbath.'
15 Then the Lord said to him in response: “You hypocrites! Does not each one of you, on the Sabbath, release his ox or donkey from the stall, and lead it to water?	15 But the Lord answered him and said, 'Hypocrites! Is there one of you who does not untie his ox or hisdonkey from the manger on the Sabbath and take it out for watering?
16 So then, should not this daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound for lo these eighteen years, be released from this restraint on the day of the Sabbath?”	16 And this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan has held bound these eighteen years -- was itnot right to untie this bond on the Sabbath day?'
17 And as he was saying these things, all his adversaries were ashamed. And all the people rejoiced in everything that was being done gloriously by him.	17 When he said this, all his adversaries were covered with confusion, and al the people were overjoyedat al the wonders he worked.
18 And so he said: “To what is the kingdom of God similar, and to what figure shall I compare it?	18 He went on to say, 'What is the kingdom of God like? What shall I compare it with?
19 It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took and cast into his garden. And it grew, and it became a great tree, and the birds of the air rested in its branches.”	19 It is like a mustard seed which a man took and threw into his garden: it grew and became a tree, andthe birds of the air sheltered in its branches.'
20 And again, he said: “To what figure shall I compare the kingdom of God?	20 Again he said, 'What shall I compare the kingdom of God with?
21 It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of fine wheat flour, until it was entirely leavened.”	21 It is like the yeast a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour til it was leavened althrough.'
22 And he was traveling through the cities and towns, teaching and making his way to Jerusalem.	22 Through towns and vil ages he went teaching, making his way to Jerusalem.
23 And someone said to him, “Lord, are they few who are saved?” But he said to them:	23 Someone said to him, 'Sir, wil there be only a few saved?' He said to them,
24 “Strive to enter through the narrow gate. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and not be able.	24 'Try your hardest to enter by the narrow door, because, I tell you, many wil try to enter and wil notsucceed.
25 Then, when the father of the family will have entered and shut the door, you will begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, ‘Lord, open to us.’ And in response, he will say to you, ‘I do not know where you are from.’	25 'Once the master of the house has got up and locked the door, you may find yourself standingoutside knocking on the door, saying, "Lord, open to us," but he will answer, "I do not know where you comefrom."
26 Then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets.’	26 Then you wil start saying, "We once ate and drank in your company; you taught in our streets,"
27 And he will say to you: ‘I do not know where you are from. Depart from me, all you workers of iniquity!’	27 but he wil reply, "I do not know where you come from; away from me, al evil doers!"
28 In that place, there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, yet you yourselves are expelled outside.	28 'Then there wil be weeping and grinding of teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob andal the prophets in the kingdom of God, and yourselves thrown out.
29 And they will arrive from the East, and the West, and the North, and the South; and they will recline at table in the kingdom of God.	29 And people from east and west, from north and south, wil come and sit down at the feast in thekingdom of God.
30 And behold, those who are last will be first, and those who are first will be last.”	30 'Look, there are those now last who will be first, and those now first who wil be last.'
31 On the same day, some of the Pharisees approached, saying to him: “Depart, and go away from here. For Herod wishes to kill you.”	31 Just at this time some Pharisees came up. 'Go away,' they said. 'Leave this place, because Herodmeans to kill you.'
32 And he said to them: “Go and tell that fox: ‘Behold, I cast out demons and accomplish healings, today and tomorrow. And on the third day I reach the end.’	32 He replied, 'You may go and give that fox this message: Look! Today and tomorrow I drive out devilsand heal, and on the third day I attain my end.
33 Yet truly, it is necessary for me to walk today and tomorrow and the following day. For it does not fall to a prophet to perish beyond Jerusalem.	33 But for today and tomorrow and the next day I must go on, since it would not be right for a prophet todie outside Jerusalem.
34 Jerusalem, Jerusalem! You kill the prophets, and you stone those who are sent to you. Daily, I wanted to gather together your children, in the manner of a bird with her nest under her wings, but you were not willing!	34 'Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you that kil the prophets and stone those who are sent to you! How oftenhave I longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you refused!
35 Behold, your house will be left desolate for you. But I say to you, that you shall not see me, until it happens that you say: ‘Blessed is he who has arrived in the name of the Lord.’ ”	35 Look! Your house wil be left to you. Yes, I promise you, you shal not see me till the time comeswhen you are saying: Blessed is he who is coming in the name of the Lord!'
