And there were present, at that very time, some who were reporting about the Galileans, whose blood Pilate mixed with their sacrifices.1 At that time some people who were present there told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with the blood of their sacrifices.
And responding, he said to them: “Do you think that these Galileans must have sinned more than all other Galileans, because they suffered so much?2 He said to them in reply, "Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way they were greater sinners than all other Galileans?
No, I tell you. But unless you repent, you will all perish similarly.3 By no means! But I tell you, if you do not repent, you will all perish as they did!
And those eighteen upon whom the tower of Siloam fell and killed them, do you think that they also were greater transgressors than all the men living in Jerusalem?4 Or those eighteen people who were killed when the tower at Siloam fell on them --do you think they were more guilty than everyone else who lived in Jerusalem?
No, I tell you. But if you do not repent, you will all perish similarly.”5 By no means! But I tell you, if you do not repent, you will all perish as they did!"
And he also told this parable: “A certain man had a fig tree, which was planted in his vineyard. And he came seeking fruit on it, but found none.6 And he told them this parable: "There once was a person who had a fig tree planted in his orchard, and when he came in search of fruit on it but found none,
Then he said to the cultivator of the vineyard: ‘Behold, for these three years I came seeking fruit on this fig tree, and I have found none. Therefore, cut it down. For why should it even occupy the land?’7 he said to the gardener, 'For three years now I have come in search of fruit on this fig tree but have found none. (So) cut it down. Why should it exhaust the soil?'
But in response, he said to him: ‘Lord, let it be for this year also, during which time I will dig around it and add fertilizer.8 He said to him in reply, 'Sir, leave it for this year also, and I shall cultivate the ground around it and fertilize it;
And, indeed, it should bear fruit. But if not, in the future, you shall cut it down.’ ”9 it may bear fruit in the future. If not you can cut it down.'"
Now he was teaching in their synagogue on the Sabbaths.10 He was teaching in a synagogue on the sabbath.
And behold, there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity for eighteen years. And she was bent over; and she was unable to look upwards at all.11 And a woman was there who for eighteen years had been crippled by a spirit; she was bent over, completely incapable of standing erect.
And when Jesus saw her, he called her to himself, and he said to her, “Woman, you are released from your infirmity.”12 When Jesus saw her, he called to her and said, "Woman, you are set free of your infirmity."
And he laid his hands upon her, and immediately she was straightened, and she glorified God.13 He laid his hands on her, and she at once stood up straight and glorified God.
Then, as a result, the ruler of the synagogue became angry that Jesus had cured on the Sabbath, and he said to the crowd: “There are six days on which you ought to work. Therefore, come and be cured on those, and not on the day of the Sabbath.”14 But the leader of the synagogue, indignant that Jesus had cured on the sabbath, said to the crowd in reply, "There are six days when work should be done. Come on those days to be cured, not on the sabbath day."
Then the Lord said to him in response: “You hypocrites! Does not each one of you, on the Sabbath, release his ox or donkey from the stall, and lead it to water?15 The Lord said to him in reply, "Hypocrites! Does not each one of you on the sabbath untie his ox or his ass from the manger and lead it out for watering?
So then, should not this daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound for lo these eighteen years, be released from this restraint on the day of the Sabbath?”16 This daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound for eighteen years now, ought she not to have been set free on the sabbath day from this bondage?"
And as he was saying these things, all his adversaries were ashamed. And all the people rejoiced in everything that was being done gloriously by him.17 When he said this, all his adversaries were humiliated; and the whole crowd rejoiced at all the splendid deeds done by him.
And so he said: “To what is the kingdom of God similar, and to what figure shall I compare it?18 Then he said, "What is the kingdom of God like? To what can I compare it?
It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took and cast into his garden. And it grew, and it became a great tree, and the birds of the air rested in its branches.”19 It is like a mustard seed that a person took and planted in the garden. When it was fully grown, it became a large bush and 'the birds of the sky dwelt in its branches.'"
And again, he said: “To what figure shall I compare the kingdom of God?20 Again he said, "To what shall I compare the kingdom of God?
It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of fine wheat flour, until it was entirely leavened.”21 It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed (in) with three measures of wheat flour until the whole batch of dough was leavened."
And he was traveling through the cities and towns, teaching and making his way to Jerusalem.22 He passed through towns and villages, teaching as he went and making his way to Jerusalem.
And someone said to him, “Lord, are they few who are saved?” But he said to them:23 Someone asked him, "Lord, will only a few people be saved?" He answered them,
“Strive to enter through the narrow gate. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and not be able.24 "Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I tell you, will attempt to enter but will not be strong enough.
Then, when the father of the family will have entered and shut the door, you will begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, ‘Lord, open to us.’ And in response, he will say to you, ‘I do not know where you are from.’25 After the master of the house has arisen and locked the door, then will you stand outside knocking and saying, 'Lord, open the door for us.' He will say to you in reply, 'I do not know where you are from.'
Then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets.’26 And you will say, 'We ate and drank in your company and you taught in our streets.'
And he will say to you: ‘I do not know where you are from. Depart from me, all you workers of iniquity!’27 Then he will say to you, 'I do not know where (you) are from. Depart from me, all you evildoers!'
In that place, there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, yet you yourselves are expelled outside.28 And there will be wailing and grinding of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God and you yourselves cast out.
And they will arrive from the East, and the West, and the North, and the South; and they will recline at table in the kingdom of God.29 And people will come from the east and the west and from the north and the south and will recline at table in the kingdom of God.
And behold, those who are last will be first, and those who are first will be last.”30 For behold, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last."
On the same day, some of the Pharisees approached, saying to him: “Depart, and go away from here. For Herod wishes to kill you.”31 At that time some Pharisees came to him and said, "Go away, leave this area because Herod wants to kill you."
And he said to them: “Go and tell that fox: ‘Behold, I cast out demons and accomplish healings, today and tomorrow. And on the third day I reach the end.’32 He replied, "Go and tell that fox, 'Behold, I cast out demons and I perform healings today and tomorrow, and on the third day I accomplish my purpose.
Yet truly, it is necessary for me to walk today and tomorrow and the following day. For it does not fall to a prophet to perish beyond Jerusalem.33 Yet I must continue on my way today, tomorrow, and the following day, for it is impossible that a prophet should die outside of Jerusalem.'
Jerusalem, Jerusalem! You kill the prophets, and you stone those who are sent to you. Daily, I wanted to gather together your children, in the manner of a bird with her nest under her wings, but you were not willing!34 "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how many times I yearned to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you were unwilling!
Behold, your house will be left desolate for you. But I say to you, that you shall not see me, until it happens that you say: ‘Blessed is he who has arrived in the name of the Lord.’ ”35 Behold, your house will be abandoned. (But) I tell you, you will not see me until (the time comes when) you say, 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.'"
