| 1 Ephraim feeds on wind and follows burning heat; all day long he multiplies lies and desolation. And he has entered into a pact with the Assyrians, and he has carried oil into Egypt. | 1 Ephraim besieges me with lying, the House of Israel with duplicity. (But Judah stil is on God's side, heis faithful to the Holy One.) |
| 2 Therefore, the judgment of the Lord is with Judah and a visitation is upon Jacob. He will repay him according to his ways and according to his inventions. | 2 Ephraim feeds himself on wind, all day he chases the wind from the East, he heaps up cheating andviolence; they make a treaty with Assyria, at the same time sending oil to Egypt. |
| 3 In the womb, he supplanted his brother; for in his good fortune, he had been guided by an angel. | 3 Yahweh has a case against Judah, he will punish Jacob as his conduct merits, he will repay him as hisdeeds deserve. |
| 4 And he prevailed over an angel, for he had been strengthened. He wept and petitioned him. He found him in Bethel, and there he has spoken to us. | 4 In the very womb he overreached his brother, in maturity he wrestled against God. |
| 5 And the Lord God of hosts, the Lord is his memorial. | 5 He wrestled with the angel and beat him, he wept and pleaded with him. He met him at Bethel andthere God spoke to us- |
| 6 And so, you should convert to your God. Keep mercy and judgment, and have hope in your God always. | 6 yes, Yahweh, God Sabaoth, Yahweh is his title! |
| 7 Canaan, in his hand is a deceitful balance, he has chosen false accusations. | 7 So turn back with God's help, maintain faithful love and loyalty and always put your trust in your God. |
| 8 And Ephraim has said, “Nevertheless, I have become rich; I have found an idol for myself. All of my labors will not reveal to me the iniquity that I have committed.” | 8 Merchants use fraudulent scales. To defraud is his delight. |
| 9 And I, the Lord your God from the land of Egypt, nevertheless will cause you to dwell in tabernacles, just as during the days of the feast. | 9 'How rich I have become!' says Ephraim, 'I have made a fortune.' But of al his gains he wil keepnothing because of the sin of which he is guilty. |
| 10 And I have spoken through the prophets, and I have multiplied visions, and I have used parables through the hands of the prophets. | 10 But I have been Yahweh your God since your days in Egypt and will make you live in tents again asin the days of Meeting. |
| 11 If Gilead is an idol, then they have been sacrificing cattle in Gilgal to no purpose. For even their altars are like clutter on the soil of the field. | 11 I will speak through prophets, I will give vision after vision and through the ministry of prophets wilspeak in parables. |
| 12 Jacob fled into the region of Syria, and Israel served like a wife, and was served by a wife. | 12 Is Gilead a sink of iniquity? Yes, they are a worthless lot! At Gilgal they sacrifice to bulls, that is whytheir altars are like heaps of stones in a ploughed field. |
| 13 Yet by a prophet the Lord led Israel out of Egypt, and he was served by a prophet. | 13 Jacob fled to the countryside of Aram, Israel slaved to win a wife, to win a wife he looked after sheep. |
| 14 Ephraim has provoked me to wrath with his bitterness, and his blood will overcome him, and his Lord will requite him for his shamefulness. | 14 By a prophet Yahweh brought Israel out of Egypt and by a prophet Israel was preserved. |
| 15 Ephraim gave bitter provocation- Yahweh will bring his bloodshed down on him, his Lord wil repayhim for his insult. |
