The word that Jeremiah the prophet spoke to Baruch, the son of Neriah, when he had written these words in a book, from the mouth of Jeremiah, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim, the son of Josiah, the king of Judah, saying:1 El año cuarto de Joaquim, hijo de Josías, rey de Judá, el profeta Jeremías dirigió estas palabras a Baruc, hijo de Nerías, cuando este escribía en un rollo lo que le dictaba Jeremías:
“Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, to you, Baruch:2 «Esto dice el Señor, Dios de Israel, respecto a ti, Baruc:
You have said: ‘Woe to me, a wretched man! For the Lord has added sorrow to my sorrow. I have labored in my groaning, and I have not found rest.’3 Te lamentas de que eres un desgraciado, de que el Señor añade sufrimiento a tu dolor y de que estás cansado de gemir y no encuentras reposo.
Thus says the Lord: So shall you say to him: Behold, those whom I have built up, I destroy, and those whom I have planted, I uproot, even this entire land.4 Pues me ordena que te diga lo siguiente: Esto dice el Señor: Ya sabes que destruyo lo que he construido y que arranco lo que he plantado, y así en toda la tierra.
And are you seeking great things for yourself? Do not choose to seek them. For behold, I will lead evil over all that is flesh, says the Lord. But I will give your life to you unto salvation, in every place, wherever you may travel.”5 ¿Y vienes ahora a pedir para ti algo extraordinario? ¡Ni se te ocurra!, pues ahora que voy a enviar calamidades a todos los seres vivos —oráculo del Señor— date por satisfecho si salvas tu vida vayas por donde vayas. Ese será el botín que consigas».
