Sirach 11

1 The wisdom of one who is humble will exalt his head, and will cause him to sit down in the midst of great men.	1 La sapienza dell'umile lo innalzerà e lo farà sedere tra i grandi.
2 You should not praise a man for his beauty, and you should not despise a man for his appearances.	2 Non lodare un uomo per la sua bellezza, e non disprezzare una persona per il suo aspetto.
3 The bee is small among flying things, but its fruit holds the summit of sweetness.	3 Piccola cosa tra i volatili è l'ape, eppure il suo frutto ha il primato della dolcezza.
4 You should not glory in clothing at any time, and you should not let yourself be extolled in the day of your honor. For the works of the Most High alone are wondrous; and glorious and hidden and unseen are his works.	4 Non ti gloriar mai del tuo vestito, non t'insuperbire quando sarai onorato; perchè soltanto le opere dell'Altissimo son maravigliose, le opere di lui son gloriose, nascoste, invisibili.
5 Many tyrants have sat upon a throne, and one whom no one would admire has worn a diadem.	5 Sederono sul trono molti tiranni, e portò il diadema colui al quale nessuno pensava.
6 Many powerful men have been powerfully cast down, and the illustrious have been handed over into the hands of others.	6 Molti potenti sono stati profondamente umiliati, e chi era nella gloria fu dato in altrui potere.
7 Before you inquire, you should not place blame on anyone; and when you have inquired, reprove justly.	7 Non biasimare avanti d'esserti informato, quando ti sarai informato riprenderai con giustizia.
8 Before you listen, you should not respond a word; and you should not interrupt in the middle of a discourse.	8 Non rispondere prima d'aver ascoltato, e non interrompere l'altrui discorso.
9 You should not contend in a matter which does not concern you, and you should not sit in judgment together with sinners.	9 Non contendere per cosa che non ti molesta, e non ti mettere a giudicar coi peccatori.
10 Son, you should not be involved in many matters. And if you become rich, you will not be free from transgression. For if you pursue, you will not apprehend; and if you run ahead, you will not escape.	10 Figlio, non t'impicciare in molte cose: se diverrai ricco, non sarai immune da colpa; se andrai dietro (a molte) non ne porterai in fondo (una), ed anche fuggendo, non ti trarrai d'impaccio.
11 There is an impious man who labors and hurries and grieves, but all the more will he be without abundance.	11 C'è chi fatica, s'affretta e patisce, e, essendo empio, tanto meno arricchisce.
12 There is a debilitated man in need of recovery, who is lacking in strength and abundant in poverty.	12 C'è invece un disgraziato bisognoso d'aiuto, privo d'ogni forza e ricco di miseria;
13 Yet the eye of God has looked with favor upon him for his benefit, and he has lifted him up from his humiliation, and he has exalted his head. And many have wondered at him, and they have honored God.	13 ma l'occhio di Dio lo guarda benignamente, lo solleva dalla sua umile condizione, gli fa alzare la testa, e molti ne restano ammirati e glorificano Dio.
14 Good things and misfortune, life and death, poverty and wealth, are from God.	14 I beni e i mali, la vita e la morte, la povertà e la ricchezza vengono da Dio.
15 Wisdom, and discipline, and knowledge of the law are with God. Love and the ways of good things are with him.	15 La sapienza, la disciplina e la scienza della legge son da Dio, son da lui l'amore e le vie del bene.
16 Error and darkness have been created by sinners. And those who exult in evil, grow old in evil.	16 L'errore e le tenebre sono ingenite nei peccatori, e chi esulta nel male invecchia nella malizia.
17 The gift of God remains with the just man, and his advancement will have success unto eternity.	17 Il dono di Dio rimane ai giusti, e il suo progresso avrà dei successi in eterno.
18 There is one who is enriched by spending sparingly, and this is the extent of his reward.	18 C'è chi arricchisce a forza di risparmi, ed ecco la parte che gli tocca in ricompensa:
19 About this, he says: “I have found rest for myself, and now I alone will eat from my goods.”	19 che può dire: « Ho trovato riposo, ed ora mi godrò da solo i miei beni »
20 But he does not know how much time will pass before death approaches, and then he must leave everything behind to others and die.	20 e non sa quanto tempo debba passare avanti che s'avvicini la morte, quando morrà lasciando tutto agli altri.
21 Stand fast in your covenant, and become familiar with it, and grow old in the work of your commandments.	21 Stai al tuo patto, di esso ragiona, e invecchia nell'adempimento di quanto t'è comandato.
22 You should not spend time in the works of sinners. Instead, trust in God and remain in your own place.	22 Non rimanere stupito dell'agire dei peccatori, ma confida in Dio e rimani al tuo posto;
23 For it is easy, in the eyes of God, to make a pauper suddenly rich.	23 perché è facile davanti a Dio arricchire in un momento il povero.
24 The blessing of God hurries to reward the just man, and in a fleeting hour his advancement bears fruit.	24 La benedizione di Dio s'affretta a ricompensare il giusto, e in breve ora fa fruttificare i suoi progressi.
25 You should not say: “What do I need?” or, “What good will there be for me in this?”	25 Non dire: « Di che ho bisogno? E quali beni potrò avere da qui in avanti? »
26 You should not say: “I have enough for myself,” or, “What could be worse than this?”	26 Non dire: « Io basto a me stesso; e qual disgrazia ormai mi potrà, accadere? »
27 In a day of good things, you should not be forgetful of misfortunes. And in a day of misfortunes, you should not be forgetful of good things.	27 Nel giorno della felicità non ti dimenticare della sventura, e nel giorno della sventura non ti dimenticare della felicità.
28 For it is easy, in the sight of God, on the day of one’s passing, to repay each one according to his ways.	28 E' cosa facile a Dio, nel giorno della morte, rendere a ciascuno secondo la sua condotta.
29 The affliction of an hour causes one to forget great delights, and in the end of a man is the uncovering of his works.	29 Il male d'un'ora fa dimenticare i grandi piaceri, e alla fine dell'uomo le sue opere saranno svelate.
30 You should not praise any man before death. For a man is known by his children.	30 Non lodar nessuno avanti la sua morte, perchè l'uomo si conosce dai suoi figlioli.
31 You should not bring every man into your house. For many are the snares of the deceitful.	31 Non menare in casa tua ogni sorta di persone, perchè son molte le insidie dell'ingannatore.
32 For as a stomach with a bad smell vomits, and as a partridge is led into a cage, and like a deer led into a snare, so also is the heart of the arrogant. And it is like a bystander watching his neighbor fall.	32 Come lo stomaco guasto rutta fetidi odori, come la pernice è attirata nella gabbia e il daino nel laccio, così fa il cuore del superbo, e come chi spia per vedere la caduta del prossimo.
33 For it lies in ambush, and then turns good into evil, and it will place the blame on the elect.	33 Infatti, convertendo il bene in male, tende insidie, e alle doti migliori apporrà delle macchie.
34 From one spark, a great fire grows; and from one deceitful man, much blood flows. But a very sinful man lies in ambush for blood.	34 Da una sola scintilla divamperà l'incendio, da un solo ingannatore saran moltiplicate le stragi; e l'uomo perverso attenta alla vita.
35 Pay close attention to yourself before a harmful man, for he fabricates evils. Otherwise, he may lead over you a whispered reproach unceasingly.	35 Guardati dal corruttore, che ordisce guai, affinchè non abbia a tirarti addosso eterno scherno.
36 Receive a stranger to yourself, and he will overthrow you with a whirlwind, and he will alienate you from what is your very own.	36 Metti in casa uno straniero, ed egli ti metterà sottosopra e in tempesta, e ti alienerà dai tuoi.
