Sirach 11

1 The wisdom of one who is humble will exalt his head, and will cause him to sit down in the midst of great men.	1 A sabedoria do humilde levantará a sua cabeça e o fará sentar-se no meio dos grandes.
2 You should not praise a man for his beauty, and you should not despise a man for his appearances.	2 Não avalies um homem pela sua aparência, não desprezes um homem pelo seu aspecto.
3 The bee is small among flying things, but its fruit holds the summit of sweetness.	3 Pequena é a abelha entre os seres alados: o que produz, entretanto, é o que há de mais doce.
4 You should not glory in clothing at any time, and you should not let yourself be extolled in the day of your honor. For the works of the Most High alone are wondrous; and glorious and hidden and unseen are his works.	4 Não te glories nunca de tuas vestes, não te engrandeças no dia em que fores homenageado, pois só as obras do Altíssimo são admiráveis, dignas de glória, misteriosas e invisíveis.
5 Many tyrants have sat upon a throne, and one whom no one would admire has worn a diadem.	5 Muitos príncipes ocuparam o trono, e alguém, em quem se não pensava, usou o diadema.
6 Many powerful men have been powerfully cast down, and the illustrious have been handed over into the hands of others.	6 Muitos poderosos foram grandemente oprimidos, e homens ilustres foram entregues às mãos de outrem.
7 Before you inquire, you should not place blame on anyone; and when you have inquired, reprove justly.	7 Não censures ninguém antes de estares bem informado; e quando te tiveres informado, repreende com eqüidade;
8 Before you listen, you should not respond a word; and you should not interrupt in the middle of a discourse.	8 nada respondas antes de ter ouvido, não interrompas ninguém no meio do seu discurso.
9 You should not contend in a matter which does not concern you, and you should not sit in judgment together with sinners.	9 Não indagues das coisas que não te dizem respeito; não te assentes com os maus para julgar.
10 Son, you should not be involved in many matters. And if you become rich, you will not be free from transgression. For if you pursue, you will not apprehend; and if you run ahead, you will not escape.	10 Meu filho, não empreendas coisas em demasia, porque, se adquirires riquezas, não ficarás isento de culpa; se empreenderes muitos negócios, não poderás abrangê-los; se te antecipares, não te sairás bem deles.
11 There is an impious man who labors and hurries and grieves, but all the more will he be without abundance.	11 Há ímpio que trabalha, se apressa e se queixa, porém só se torna menos rico.
12 There is a debilitated man in need of recovery, who is lacking in strength and abundant in poverty.	12 Há homem esgotado e em grande necessidade de alívio, pobre de energia e rico em necessidades,
13 Yet the eye of God has looked with favor upon him for his benefit, and he has lifted him up from his humiliation, and he has exalted his head. And many have wondered at him, and they have honored God.	13 que o olhar de Deus considera com benevolência, e tira do desalento para lhe dar ânimo; muitos, ao verem isso, ficam surpreendidos e dão glória a Deus.
14 Good things and misfortune, life and death, poverty and wealth, are from God.	14 Bens e males, vida e morte, pobreza e riqueza vêm de Deus.
15 Wisdom, and discipline, and knowledge of the law are with God. Love and the ways of good things are with him.	15 Em Deus se encontram a sabedoria, o conhecimento e a ciência da lei; nele residem a caridade e as boas obras.
16 Error and darkness have been created by sinners. And those who exult in evil, grow old in evil.	16 O erro e as trevas foram criados com os pecadores; aqueles que se comprazem no mal, envelhecerão no mal.
17 The gift of God remains with the just man, and his advancement will have success unto eternity.	17 O dom de Deus permanece nos justos, e seu aproveitamento assegura um triunfo eterno.
18 There is one who is enriched by spending sparingly, and this is the extent of his reward.	18 Há homem que enriquece, vivendo com economia, e a única recompensa que dela usufrui é a
19 About this, he says: “I have found rest for myself, and now I alone will eat from my goods.”	19 de poder dizer: Achei o repouso, vou agora desfrutar meus haveres sozinho.
20 But he does not know how much time will pass before death approaches, and then he must leave everything behind to others and die.	20 E ele não considera que o tempo passa, que vem a morte, e que, ao morrer, tudo deixará para os outros.
21 Stand fast in your covenant, and become familiar with it, and grow old in the work of your commandments.	21 Permanece firme em tua aliança com Deus; que isto seja sempre o assunto de tuas conversas. E envelhece praticando os mandamentos.
22 You should not spend time in the works of sinners. Instead, trust in God and remain in your own place.	22 Não prestes atenção ao que fazem os pecadores; põe tua confiança em Deus, e limita-te ao que fazes.
23 For it is easy, in the eyes of God, to make a pauper suddenly rich.	23 É, com efeito, coisa fácil aos olhos de Deus enriquecer repentinamente o pobre.
24 The blessing of God hurries to reward the just man, and in a fleeting hour his advancement bears fruit.	24 A bênção divina não se faz esperar para recompensar o justo. Em pouco tempo ele o faz crescer e dar fruto.
25 You should not say: “What do I need?” or, “What good will there be for me in this?”	25 Não digas: De que preciso eu? Que tenho a esperar doravante?
26 You should not say: “I have enough for myself,” or, “What could be worse than this?”	26 Não digas tampouco: Eu me basto a mim mesmo; que mal posso temer para o futuro?
27 In a day of good things, you should not be forgetful of misfortunes. And in a day of misfortunes, you should not be forgetful of good things.	27 No dia feliz não percas a recordação dos males, nem a recordação do bem no dia infeliz.
28 For it is easy, in the sight of God, on the day of one’s passing, to repay each one according to his ways.	28 Pois no dia da morte é fácil para Deus dar a cada um conforme o seu comportamento.
29 The affliction of an hour causes one to forget great delights, and in the end of a man is the uncovering of his works.	29 A dor de um instante faz esquecer os maiores prazeres; com a morte do homem, todos os seus atos serão desvendados.
30 You should not praise any man before death. For a man is known by his children.	30 Não louves a homem algum antes de sua morte, pois é em seus filhos que se reconhece um homem.
31 You should not bring every man into your house. For many are the snares of the deceitful.	31 Não tragas um homem qualquer à tua casa, pois numerosas são as armadilhas do que engana.
32 For as a stomach with a bad smell vomits, and as a partridge is led into a cage, and like a deer led into a snare, so also is the heart of the arrogant. And it is like a bystander watching his neighbor fall.	32 Assim como sai um hálito fétido de um estômago estragado, assim como a perdiz atrai para a armadilha, e o cabrito para os laços, assim é o coração dos soberbos, e daquele que está à espreita para ver a ruína do próximo.
33 For it lies in ambush, and then turns good into evil, and it will place the blame on the elect.	33 Transformando o bem em mal, ele arma ciladas, e põe nódoas nas coisas mais puras.
34 From one spark, a great fire grows; and from one deceitful man, much blood flows. But a very sinful man lies in ambush for blood.	34 Uma centelha basta para acender uma grande fogueira; um só rebanho é causa de múltiplos morticínios, e o pecador procura traiçoeiramente derramar sangue.
35 Pay close attention to yourself before a harmful man, for he fabricates evils. Otherwise, he may lead over you a whispered reproach unceasingly.	35 Acautela-te contra o corruptor que trama a iniqüidade, para não acontecer que ele faça de ti um eterno objeto de mofa.
36 Receive a stranger to yourself, and he will overthrow you with a whirlwind, and he will alienate you from what is your very own.	36 Dás entrada em tua casa ao estrangeiro? Ele aí suscitará uma discórdia que te derrubará, e te tornará inimigo das pessoas de tua própria casa.
