Sirach 11

1 The wisdom of one who is humble will exalt his head, and will cause him to sit down in the midst of great men.	1 La saggezza dell'umile lo innalzerà, e farallo sedere nel consesso de' magnati.
2 You should not praise a man for his beauty, and you should not despise a man for his appearances.	2 Non lodare un uomo per la sua avvenenza, e non disprezzare alcuno per quel, che di lui apparisce:
3 The bee is small among flying things, but its fruit holds the summit of sweetness.	3 Piccola cosa trai volatili è l'ape, ma il suo frutto ogni dolcezza sorpassa.
4 You should not glory in clothing at any time, and you should not let yourself be extolled in the day of your honor. For the works of the Most High alone are wondrous; and glorious and hidden and unseen are his works.	4 Non ti gloriare delle vestimenta, e non ti invanire quando sarai innalzato agli onori; perocché solo dell'Altissimo son mirabili le opere; e le opere di lui sono gloriose, e segrete, e non conosciute.
5 Many tyrants have sat upon a throne, and one whom no one would admire has worn a diadem.	5 Sederono in trono molti tiranni: e tal portò il diadema, a cui nissuno pensava.
6 Many powerful men have been powerfully cast down, and the illustrious have been handed over into the hands of others.	6 Molti potenti caddero in grande oppressione; e i magnati furon dati in potere altrui.
7 Before you inquire, you should not place blame on anyone; and when you have inquired, reprove justly.	7 Non biasimare nissuno prima di informarti; e quando sarai informato, riprenderai con giustizia.
8 Before you listen, you should not respond a word; and you should not interrupt in the middle of a discourse.	8 Non risponder parola prima di aver sentito; e non interrompere l'altrui discorso.
9 You should not contend in a matter which does not concern you, and you should not sit in judgment together with sinners.	9 Non contendere per cosa, che nulla a te importa; e non unirti a giudicare con quei, che peccano.
10 Son, you should not be involved in many matters. And if you become rich, you will not be free from transgression. For if you pursue, you will not apprehend; and if you run ahead, you will not escape.	10 Figliuolo non impicciarti in molte cose; perocché se diverai ricco, non sarai esente da colpa. E andando dietro (a molte cose) non verrai a capo di alcuna; e qualunque diligenza tu facci, non potrai trarti fuora.
11 There is an impious man who labors and hurries and grieves, but all the more will he be without abundance.	11 Taluno si affanna, e si da da fare, e patisce, essendo privo di pietà, e tanto meno arricchisce:
12 There is a debilitated man in need of recovery, who is lacking in strength and abundant in poverty.	12 Tal altro è languido, e bisognoso di ajuto, e privo di forze, e ricco di miseria:
13 Yet the eye of God has looked with favor upon him for his benefit, and he has lifted him up from his humiliation, and he has exalted his head. And many have wondered at him, and they have honored God.	13 E l'occhio di Dio mira costui benignamente, e lo solleva dal suo abbattimento, e gli fa alzare la testa, e molti ne restano ammirati, e a Dio ne rendono onore.
14 Good things and misfortune, life and death, poverty and wealth, are from God.	14 I beni, e i mali, la vita, e la morte, la povertà, e la ricchezza vengon da Dio.
15 Wisdom, and discipline, and knowledge of the law are with God. Love and the ways of good things are with him.	15 La sapienza, e la disciplina, e la scienza della legge sono da Dio: la carità, e le opere de' buoni sono da lui.
16 Error and darkness have been created by sinners. And those who exult in evil, grow old in evil.	16 L'errore, e le tenebre sono ingenite ai peccatori: e quelli, che esultano nel male, invecchiano nella malizia.
17 The gift of God remains with the just man, and his advancement will have success unto eternity.	17 Il dono di Dio rimane presso de' giusti, e con vantaggiosi progressi anderà crescendo continuamente.
18 There is one who is enriched by spending sparingly, and this is the extent of his reward.	18 Taluno si fa ricco colla parsimonia, e questo sol frutto ha per sua mercede,
19 About this, he says: “I have found rest for myself, and now I alone will eat from my goods.”	19 Che dice: Io son contento, e adesso mangerò de' miei beni io solo.
20 But he does not know how much time will pass before death approaches, and then he must leave everything behind to others and die.	20 Ma egli non sa quanto tempo vi sia, perché la morte si accosti, ed egli lasci ad altri ogni cosa, e si muoja.
21 Stand fast in your covenant, and become familiar with it, and grow old in the work of your commandments.	21 Tienti costante al tuo patto, e sopra di questo ragiona, e invecchia nell'adempiere quel, che ti è comandato.
22 You should not spend time in the works of sinners. Instead, trust in God and remain in your own place.	22 Non ti abbagli il fare de' peccatori; ma confida in Dio, e sta al tuo posto;
23 For it is easy, in the eyes of God, to make a pauper suddenly rich.	23 Perocché è cosa facile dinanzi a Dio l'arricchire il povero in un momento.
24 The blessing of God hurries to reward the just man, and in a fleeting hour his advancement bears fruit.	24 La benedizione di Dio corre a rimunerare il giusto, e in brev'ora fa, che egli cresca, e fruttifichi.
25 You should not say: “What do I need?” or, “What good will there be for me in this?”	25 Non dire: Che ho io da fare? e qual bene omai avrò io?
26 You should not say: “I have enough for myself,” or, “What could be worse than this?”	26 Non dire: io basto a me stesso: e qual male può mai venirmi?
27 In a day of good things, you should not be forgetful of misfortunes. And in a day of misfortunes, you should not be forgetful of good things.	27 Nel dì felice non ti scordare de' cattivi giorni, e nel giorno cattivo non ti scordare del giorno felice:
28 For it is easy, in the sight of God, on the day of one’s passing, to repay each one according to his ways.	28 Ed è cosa facile a Dio il rendere a ciascheduno secondo le opere sue nel dì della morte.
29 The affliction of an hour causes one to forget great delights, and in the end of a man is the uncovering of his works.	29 Il male di un'ora fa dimenticare le grandi delizie; perché nella fine dell'uomo si manifestano le sue operazioni.
30 You should not praise any man before death. For a man is known by his children.	30 Non lodar verun uomo prima della sua morte; perocché l'uomo si riconosce da' suoi figliuoli.
31 You should not bring every man into your house. For many are the snares of the deceitful.	31 Non introdurre in casa tua ogni sorta di persone; perocché molte sono le insidie degli ingannatori;
32 For as a stomach with a bad smell vomits, and as a partridge is led into a cage, and like a deer led into a snare, so also is the heart of the arrogant. And it is like a bystander watching his neighbor fall.	32 Perocché come uno stomaco fetido getta dei rutti, e come la pernice è condotta alla gabbia, e il daino al laccio, cosi va la cosa riguardo al cuor del superbo, che osserva come da una vedetta la caduta del suo prossimo.
33 For it lies in ambush, and then turns good into evil, and it will place the blame on the elect.	33 Perocché egli il bene convertendo in male sta tendendo insidie, e agli eletti stessi apporrà delle macchie.
34 From one spark, a great fire grows; and from one deceitful man, much blood flows. But a very sinful man lies in ambush for blood.	34 Da una sola scintilla divampa il fuoco: e un solo ingannatore moltiplica le stragi; perché l'uom peccatore tende a spargere il sangue.
35 Pay close attention to yourself before a harmful man, for he fabricates evils. Otherwise, he may lead over you a whispered reproach unceasingly.	35 Guardati dall'uomo malizioso macchinatore di guai, affinchè egli non abbia a tirarti addosso infamia per petua.
36 Receive a stranger to yourself, and he will overthrow you with a whirlwind, and he will alienate you from what is your very own.	36 Ricevi in tua casa lo straniero, ed egli la metterà sottosopra, e ti rovinerà, e ti spoglierà anche del tuo.
