1 A Canticle in steps. Those who trust in the Lord will be like the mountain of Zion. He will not be disturbed for eternity, who dwells1 [Song of Ascents Of David] If Yahweh had not been on our side -- let Israel repeat it-
2 in Jerusalem. Mountains surround it. And the Lord surrounds his people, from this time forward and even forever.2 if Yahweh had not been on our side when people attacked us,
3 For the Lord will not allow the rod of sinners to remain over the lot of the just, so that the just may not extend their hands toward iniquity.3 they would have swal owed us alive in the heat of their anger.
4 Do good, O Lord, to the good and to the upright of heart.4 Then water was washing us away, a torrent running right over us;
5 But those who turn away into obligation, the Lord will lead away with the workers of iniquity. Peace be upon Israel.5 running right over us then were turbulent waters.
6 Blessed be Yahweh for not letting us fall a prey to their teeth!
7 We escaped like a bird from the fowlers' net. The net was broken and we escaped;
8 our help is in the name of Yahweh, who made heaven and earth.
