CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINDOUAI-RHEIMS
And Job, responding, said:1 And Job answered, and said:
Truly, I know that it is so, and that man cannot be justified compared with God.2 Indeed I know it is so, and that man cannot be justified compared with
If he chooses to contend with him, he is not able to respond to him once out of a thousand times.3 If he will contend with him, he cannot answer him one for a thousand.
He is understanding in heart and mighty in strength; who has resisted him and yet had peace?4 He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength: who hath resisted him, and hath had peace ?
He has moved mountains, and those whom he overthrew in his fury did not know it.5 Who hath removed mountains, and they whom he overthrew in his wrath, knew it not.
He shakes the earth out of its place and its pillars tremble.6 Who shaketh the earth out of her place, and the pillars thereof tremble.
He commands the sun and it does not rise, and he closes the stars as if under a seal.7 Who commandeth tile sun and it riseth not: and shutteth up the stars as it were under a seal:
He alone extends the heavens, and he walks upon the waves of the sea.8 Who alone spreadeth out the heavens, and walketh upon the waves of the sea.
He fashions Arcturus, and Orion, and Hyades, and the interior of the south.9 Who maketh Arcturus, and Orion, and Hyades, and the inner parts of the south.
He accomplishes great and incomprehensible and miraculous things, which cannot be numbered.10 Who doth things great and incomprehensible, and wonderful, of which there is no number.
If he approaches me, I will not see him; if he departs, I will not understand.11 If he come to me, I shall not see him: if he depart I shall not understand.
If he suddenly should question, who will answer him? Or who can say, “Why did you do so?”12 If he examine on a sudden, who shall answer him? or who can say: Why dost thou so?
God, whose wrath no one is able to resist, and under whom they bend who carry the world,13 God, whose wrath no mall can resist, and under whom they stoop that bear up the world.
what am I then, that I should answer him and exchange words with him?14 What am I then, that I should answer him, and have words with him?
And if I now have any justice, I will not respond, but will beseech my judge.15 I, who although I should have any just thing, would not answer, but would make supplication to my judge.
And if he should listen to me when I call, I would not believe that he had heard my voice.16 And if he should hear me when I call, I should not believe that he had heard my voice.
For he will crush me in a whirlwind and multiply my wounds, even without cause.17 For he shall crush me in a whirlwind, and multiply my wounds even without cause.
He does not permit my spirit to rest, and he fills me with bitterness.18 He alloweth not my spirit to rest, and he filleth me with bitterness.
If strength is sought, he is most strong; if equity in judgment, no one would dare to give testimony for me.19 If strength be demanded, he is most strong: if equity of judgment, no man dare bear witness for me.
If I wanted to justify myself, my own mouth will condemn me; if I would reveal my innocence, he would prove me depraved.20 If I would justify myself, my own mouth shall condemn me: if I would shew myself innocent, he shall prove me wicked.
And if I now became simple, my soul would be ignorant even of this, and my life would weary me.21 Although I should be simple, even this my soul shall be ignorant of, and I shall be weary of my life.
There is one thing that I have said: both the innocent and the impious he consumes.22 One thing there is that I have spoken, both the innocent and the wicked he consumeth.
If he scourges, let him kill all at once, and not laugh at the punishment of the innocent.23 If he scourge, let him kill at once, and not laugh at the pains of the innocent.
Since the earth has been given into the hand of the impious, he covers the face of its judges; for if it is not him, then who is it?24 The earth is given into the hand of the wicked, he covereth the face of the judges thereof: and if it be not he, who is it then?
My days have been swifter than a messenger; they have fled and have not seen goodness.25 My days have been swifter than a post: they have fled away and have not seen good.
They have passed by like ships carrying fruits, just like an eagle flying to food.26 They have passed by as ships carrying fruits, as an eagle flying to the prey.
If I say: “By no means will I speak this way.” I change my face and I am tortured with sorrow.27 If I say: I will not speak so: I change my face, and am tormented with sorrow.
I have dreaded all my works, knowing that you did not spare the offender.28 I feared all my works, knowing that thou didst not spare the offender.
Yet, if I am also just as impious, why have I labored in vain?29 But if so also I am wicked, why have I laboured in vain?
If I had been washed with snow-like waters, and my hands were shining like the cleanest thing,30 If I be washed as it were with snow waters, and my hands shall shine ever so clean :
yet you would plunge me in filth, and my own garments would abhor me.31 Yet thou shalt plunge me in filth, and my garments shall abhor me,
For even I would not answer a man who were like myself, nor one who could be heard with me equally in judgment.32 For I shall not answer a man that is like myself: nor one that may be heard with me equally in judgment.
There is no one who could both prevail in argument and in placing his hand between the two.33 There is none that may be able to reprove both, and to put his hand between both.
Let him take his staff away from me, and let not the fear of him terrify me.34 Let him take his rod away from me, and let not his fear terrify me.
I will speak and I will not fear him, for in fearfulness I am not able to respond.35 I will speak, and will not fear him: for I cannot answer while I am in fear.
