1 And Job, responding, said:	1 - Ma Giobbe rispose e disse:
2 Truly, I know that it is so, and that man cannot be justified compared with God.	2 «Veramente io so che è così, e che l'uomo non può giustificarsi in confronto con Dio;
3 If he chooses to contend with him, he is not able to respond to him once out of a thousand times.	3 se egli volesse contender con lui, non potrebbe rispondergli una volta su mille.
4 He is understanding in heart and mighty in strength; who has resisted him and yet had peace?	4 Sapiente di cuore e gagliardo di forza, chi mai resistè contro lui e rimase tranquillo?
5 He has moved mountains, and those whom he overthrew in his fury did not know it.	5 Sposta egli i monti e non se n'avvedono, e li sconvolge nel furore suo:
6 He shakes the earth out of its place and its pillars tremble.	6 fa traballar la terra dal suo sito, e le colonne di lei ne sono scosse:
7 He commands the sun and it does not rise, and he closes the stars as if under a seal.	7 dà un comando al sole ed esso non spunta, e tien racchiuse le stelle quasi sotto un suggello:
8 He alone extends the heavens, and he walks upon the waves of the sea.	8 i cieli egli stende da solo, incede sopra i flutti del mare:
9 He fashions Arcturus, and Orion, and Hyades, and the interior of the south.	9 egli ha creato Arturo ed Orionele Pleiadi e le Costellazioni dell'Austro:
10 He accomplishes great and incomprehensible and miraculous things, which cannot be numbered.	10 opera egli cose grandi ed incomprensibili, cose mirabili che non hanno numero.
11 If he approaches me, I will not see him; if he departs, I will not understand.	11 Se egli a me viene, io non lo scorgo, se s'allontana, io non me ne avvedo;
12 If he suddenly should question, who will answer him? Or who can say, “Why did you do so?”	12 se di repente interroga, chi potrà rispondergli, ovver chi potrà dirgli: - Perchè fai così? -
13 God, whose wrath no one is able to resist, and under whom they bend who carry the world,	13 Dio, alla cui ira nessuno può resistere, e sotto cui si curvano coloro che sostengono l'orbe,
14 what am I then, that I should answer him and exchange words with him?	14 a costui, che grandezza ho io perchè possa rispondergli, e pronunciar le mie parole avanti a lui?
15 And if I now have any justice, I will not respond, but will beseech my judge.	15 Al quale, ancor che io avessi qualche ragione, non risponderei, ma come a mio giudice chiederei pietà.
16 And if he should listen to me when I call, I would not believe that he had heard my voice.	16 E pur se mi rispondesse quand'io lo chiamassi [a giudizio], non avrei fiducia che ascolterebbe la mia voce:
17 For he will crush me in a whirlwind and multiply my wounds, even without cause.	17 egli invero nella procella mi sfracellerebbe, moltiplicherebbe le mie ferite pur senza ragione.
18 He does not permit my spirit to rest, and he fills me with bitterness.	18 Egli non concede al mio spirito di riposarsi, e mi riempie d'amarezze.
19 If strength is sought, he is most strong; if equity in judgment, no one would dare to give testimony for me.	19 Se si tratta di vigoria, - egli è il fortissimo, se dell'equità di giudizio - nessuno ardirà testimoniare per me.
20 If I wanted to justify myself, my own mouth will condemn me; if I would reveal my innocence, he would prove me depraved.	20 Se mi vorrò giustificare, la mia stessa bocca mi condannerà, se mostrarmi innocente, mi convincerà perverso.
21 And if I now became simple, my soul would be ignorant even of this, and my life would weary me.	21 Quand'anche io sia perfetto, ciò stesso l'anima mia l'ignorerà, e avrò a disdegno la mia vita.
22 There is one thing that I have said: both the innocent and the impious he consumes.	22 Questo solo è ciò ch'io ho detto:Sia l'innocente che l'empio è Lui che li distrugge.
23 If he scourges, let him kill all at once, and not laugh at the punishment of the innocent.	23 Se egli flagella, dia la morte all'istante, e delle pene degli innocenti non s'allieti.
24 Since the earth has been given into the hand of the impious, he covers the face of its judges; for if it is not him, then who is it?	24 La terra è consegnata in mano al malvagio, il volto dei giudici d'essa egli benda; se non è Lui [che fa ciò], chi è dunque?
25 My days have been swifter than a messenger; they have fled and have not seen goodness.	25 E i miei dì furon veloci più che un corriere, fuggiron via e non videro il bene;
26 They have passed by like ships carrying fruits, just like an eagle flying to food.	26 trascorsero oltre come vascelli di canna, come l'aquila che piomba sulla preda!
27 If I say: “By no means will I speak this way.” I change my face and I am tortured with sorrow.	27 Se io esclamo: - Non voglio parlar più così! -mi stravolge il viso e mi strazia il dolore.
28 I have dreaded all my works, knowing that you did not spare the offender.	28 Io temevo di tutte le mie azioni, sapendo che tu non perdoni a chi manca;
29 Yet, if I am also just as impious, why have I labored in vain?	29 chè se pur in tal modo io risulto empio, perchè dovrei travagliarmi senza vantaggio?
30 If I had been washed with snow-like waters, and my hands were shining like the cleanest thing,	30 Se io mi lavassi con acqua di neve, e le mie mani risplendessero per mondezza,
31 yet you would plunge me in filth, and my own garments would abhor me.	31 nella lordura tu m'intingeresti, sì che m'avessero a schifo i miei stessi abiti.
32 For even I would not answer a man who were like myself, nor one who could be heard with me equally in judgment.	32 Egli invero non è un uomo al pari di me, perchè io gli risponda, nè è tale che in giudizio come me possa ascoltarsi;
33 There is no one who could both prevail in argument and in placing his hand between the two.	33 non c'è chi possa far da arbitro fra me e lui, e stender la mano su ambedue.
34 Let him take his staff away from me, and let not the fear of him terrify me.	34 Ritiri egli da sopra a me il suo flagello, e il suo timore non mi sbigottisca:
35 I will speak and I will not fear him, for in fearfulness I am not able to respond.	35 [a tal condizione] parlerei, senza temerlo, poichè intimorito io non posso rispondere.
