1 And Job, responding, said:	1 Giobbe prese la parola e disse:
2 Truly, I know that it is so, and that man cannot be justified compared with God.	2 "Certo, so che è così; come può un uomo essere giusto davanti a Dio?
3 If he chooses to contend with him, he is not able to respond to him once out of a thousand times.	3 Se uno volesse disputare con lui, non gli risponderebbe una volta su mille.
4 He is understanding in heart and mighty in strength; who has resisted him and yet had peace?	4 Chi, saggio di mente e potente per la forza, gli si è opposto ed è rimasto illeso?
5 He has moved mountains, and those whom he overthrew in his fury did not know it.	5 Egli sposta le montagne senza che se ne avvedano e le sconvolge nella sua collera.
6 He shakes the earth out of its place and its pillars tremble.	6 Egli scuote la terra dal suo posto e le sue colonne vacillano.
7 He commands the sun and it does not rise, and he closes the stars as if under a seal.	7 Ordina al sole di non sorgere e mette un sigillo alle stelle.
8 He alone extends the heavens, and he walks upon the waves of the sea.	8 Egli da solo dispiega i cieli e cammina sulle onde del mare.
9 He fashions Arcturus, and Orion, and Hyades, and the interior of the south.	9 Egli forma l'Orsa e l'Orione, le Pleiadi e le Costellazioni del sud.
10 He accomplishes great and incomprehensible and miraculous things, which cannot be numbered.	10 Compie prodigi insondabili e meraviglie senza numero.
11 If he approaches me, I will not see him; if he departs, I will not understand.	11 Ecco, mi passa vicino e non lo vedo, se ne va, e di lui non mi accorgo.
12 If he suddenly should question, who will answer him? Or who can say, “Why did you do so?”	12 Se rapisce qualcosa, chi lo può impedire? Chi può dirgli: "Che cosa fai?".
13 God, whose wrath no one is able to resist, and under whom they bend who carry the world,	13 Dio non ritira la sua collera, sotto di lui si curvano le legioni di Raab.
14 what am I then, that I should answer him and exchange words with him?	14 Tanto meno potrei io rispondergli o scegliere argomenti contro di lui.
15 And if I now have any justice, I will not respond, but will beseech my judge.	15 Anche se avessi ragione non riceverei risposta, dovrei chiedere grazia al mio avversario.
16 And if he should listen to me when I call, I would not believe that he had heard my voice.	16 Anche se rispondesse al mio appello, non crederei che ha ascoltato la mia voce,
17 For he will crush me in a whirlwind and multiply my wounds, even without cause.	17 lui, che mi schiaccia nell'uragano e moltiplica senza ragione le mie ferite.
18 He does not permit my spirit to rest, and he fills me with bitterness.	18 Non mi lascia riprendere fiato, anzi mi sazia di amarezze.
19 If strength is sought, he is most strong; if equity in judgment, no one would dare to give testimony for me.	19 Se si tratta di forza, è lui il vigoroso; se si tratta di giudizio, chi lo farà comparire?
20 If I wanted to justify myself, my own mouth will condemn me; if I would reveal my innocence, he would prove me depraved.	20 Anche se fossi innocente, il mio parlare mi condannerebbe; se fossi giusto, mi dichiarerebbe perverso.
21 And if I now became simple, my soul would be ignorant even of this, and my life would weary me.	21 Sono innocente? Non lo so neppure io; detesto la mia vita.
22 There is one thing that I have said: both the innocent and the impious he consumes.	22 Però è lo stesso, ve lo assicuro, egli fa perire l'innocente e il reo!
23 If he scourges, let him kill all at once, and not laugh at the punishment of the innocent.	23 Se una calamità miete vittime in un istante, egli se ne ride della disgrazia degl'innocenti.
24 Since the earth has been given into the hand of the impious, he covers the face of its judges; for if it is not him, then who is it?	24 Lascia la terra nel potere dei malvagi, egli vela il volto dei suoi governanti. Se non è lui, chi dunque può essere?
25 My days have been swifter than a messenger; they have fled and have not seen goodness.	25 I miei giorni passano più veloci di un corriere, fuggono senza gustare felicità.
26 They have passed by like ships carrying fruits, just like an eagle flying to food.	26 Scorrono veloci come barche di giunco, come aquila che piomba sulla preda.
27 If I say: “By no means will I speak this way.” I change my face and I am tortured with sorrow.	27 Se dico: "Voglio dimenticare la mia afflizione, cambiare il mio volto ed essere lieto",
28 I have dreaded all my works, knowing that you did not spare the offender.	28 mi spavento per tutte le sofferenze; e poi so che tu non mi assolverai.
29 Yet, if I am also just as impious, why have I labored in vain?	29 Se sono colpevole, perché affaticarmi invano?
30 If I had been washed with snow-like waters, and my hands were shining like the cleanest thing,	30 Anche se mi lavassi con la neve e pulissi le mie mani con la potassa,
31 yet you would plunge me in filth, and my own garments would abhor me.	31 tu mi tufferesti nel fango e le mie vesti mi avrebbero in orrore.
32 For even I would not answer a man who were like myself, nor one who could be heard with me equally in judgment.	32 Egli, infatti, non è un uomo come me, cui possa replicare, e che insieme compariamo in giudizio.
33 There is no one who could both prevail in argument and in placing his hand between the two.	33 Non c'è un giudice tra noi che ponga la mano su noi due,
34 Let him take his staff away from me, and let not the fear of him terrify me.	34 che allontani da me la sua verga, in modo che il suo terrore non mi spaventi.
35 I will speak and I will not fear him, for in fearfulness I am not able to respond.	35 Allora potrei parlare senza temerlo; poiché non è così, sono solo con me stesso.
