1 There was a man of Ramathaim, a Zuphite from the highlands of Ephraim whose name was Elkanahson of Jeroham, son of Elihu, son of Tohu, son of Zuph, an Ephraimite.	1 Il y avait un homme de Ramataïm, un Soufite de la montagne d’Éphraïm, qui s’appelait Elkana. Il était fils de Yéroham, fils d’Élihou, fils de Tohou, fils de Souf, de la tribu d’Éphraïm.
2 He had two wives, one called Hannah, the other Peninnah; Peninnah had children but Hannah hadnone.	2 Il avait deux femmes, l’une s’appelait Anne, l’autre Pénina. Pénina avait des enfants mais Anne n’en avait pas.
3 Every year this man used to go up from his town to worship, and to sacrifice to Yahweh Sabaoth atShiloh. (The two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there as priests of Yahweh.)	3 Cet homme montait chaque année de sa ville pour adorer et pour offrir des sacrifices à Yahvé Sabaot, au sanctuaire de Silo; les deux fils d’Héli, Hofni et Pinhas, servaient comme prêtres de Yahvé en cet endroit.
4 One day Elkanah offered a sacrifice. Now he used to give portions to Peninnah and to al her sons anddaughters;	4 Un jour Elkana offrait un sacrifice; il donna des portions à sa femme Pénina ainsi qu’à ses fils et à ses filles;
5 to Hannah, however, he would give only one portion: for, although he loved Hannah more, Yahweh hadmade her barren.	5 il servit une double portion à Anne car il aimait Anne, mais Yahvé l’avait rendue stérile.
6 Furthermore, her rival would taunt and provoke her, because Yahweh had made her womb barren.	6 Sa rivale ne faisait qu’augmenter sa peine: elle l’humiliait parce que Yahvé l’avait rendue stérile.
7 And this went on year after year; every time they went up to the temple of Yahweh she used to taunther. On that day she wept and would not eat anything;	7 Chaque année c’était pareil quand elle montait à la maison de Yahvé: l’autre ravivait sa peine, Anne pleurait et ne mangeait plus.
8 so her husband Elkanah said, 'Hannah, why are you crying? Why are you not eating anything? Why areyou so sad? Am I not more to you than ten sons?'	8 Elkana, son mari, lui dit: “Anne, pourquoi pleures-tu, pourquoi ne manges-tu pas, pourquoi es-tu si triste, est-ce que je ne vaux pas mieux pour toi que dix fils?”
9 When they had finished eating in the room, Hannah got up and stood before Yahweh. Eli the priest wassitting on his seat by the doorpost of the temple of Yahweh.	9 Ce jour-là, après qu’on eut mangé et bu à Silo, Anne se leva alors que le prêtre Héli était assis sur son siège contre un des montants de la porte du sanctuaire de Yahvé.
10 In the bitterness of her soul she prayed to Yahweh with many tears,	10 Dans sa peine elle se tourna vers Yahvé et le pria sans cesser de pleurer;
11 and she made this vow, 'Yahweh Sabaoth! Should you condescend to notice the humiliation of yourservant and keep her in mind instead of disregarding your servant, and give her a boy, I wil give him to Yahwehfor the whole of his life and no razor shal ever touch his head.'	11 elle fit ce vœu: “Yahvé des armées, regarde avec bonté la peine de ta servante, souviens-toi de moi, n’oublie pas ta servante. Si tu donnes à ta servante un petit garçon, je le consacrerai à Yahvé pour le restant de ses jours et le rasoir ne passera pas sur sa tête.”
12 While she went on praying to Yahweh, Eli was watching her mouth,	12 Elle priait là longuement devant Yahvé et Héli la regardait.
13 for Hannah was speaking under her breath; her lips were moving but her voice could not be heard,and Eli thought that she was drunk.	13 Anne priait dans le fond de son cœur, elle remuait à peine les lèvres et l’on n’entendait pas sa voix.
14 Eli said, 'How much longer are you going to stay drunk? Get rid of your wine.'	14 Héli pensa donc qu’elle était ivre, il lui dit: “Combien de temps vas-tu rester dans cet état? Va cuver ton vin.”
15 'No, my lord,' Hannah replied, 'I am a woman in great trouble; I have not been drinking wine or strongdrink -- I am pouring out my soul before Yahweh.	15 Anne répondit: “Non, mon seigneur, je ne suis qu’une femme en peine; je n’ai bu ni vin, ni boisson alcoolisée, mais j’épanche mon cœur devant Yahvé.
16 Do not take your servant for a worthless woman; al this time I have been speaking from the depth ofmy grief and my resentment.'	16 Ne prends pas ta servante pour une femme de rien: si je me suis tellement attardée à prier, c’est parce que ma souffrance et mon chagrin sont grands.”
17 Eli then replied, 'Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant what you have asked of him.'	17 Héli reprit la parole et lui dit: “Va en paix, et que le Dieu d’Israël exauce la prière que tu lui as faite.”
18 To which she said, 'May your servant find favour in your sight.' With that, the woman went away; shebegan eating and was dejected no longer.	18 Elle lui dit à son tour: “Que ta servante trouve grâce à tes yeux!” Elle se leva, mangea, mais son visage n’était plus le même.
19 They got up early in the morning and, after worshipping Yahweh, set out and went home to Ramah.Elkanah lay with his wife Hannah, and Yahweh remembered her.	19 De bon matin on se leva et, après s’être prosternés devant Yahvé, ils s’en retournèrent pour regagner leur maison à Rama.
20 Hannah conceived and, in due course, gave birth to a son, whom she named Samuel, 'since', shesaid, 'I asked Yahweh for him.'	20 Elkana eut des relations avec sa femme Anne et Yahvé se souvint d’elle. Lorsque le temps fut accompli, Anne enfanta un fils et lui donna le nom de Samuel, car, dit-elle: “Je l’ai demandé à Yahvé.”
21 Elkanah, the husband, went up with all his family to offer the annual sacrifice to Yahweh and to fulfilhis vow.	21 Elkana, son mari, monta avec toute sa maison pour offrir à Yahvé le sacrifice comme chaque année et s’acquitter de son vœu.
22 However, Hannah did not go up, having said to her husband, 'Not before the child has been weaned.Then I shal bring him and present him before Yahweh and he will stay there for ever.'	22 Anne ne monta pas, mais elle dit à son mari: “Lorsque l’enfant sera sevré, je le conduirai devant Yahvé et il y restera pour toujours.”
23 Elkanah her husband then said to her, 'Do what you think fit; wait until you have weaned him. MayYahweh bring about what he has said.' So the woman stayed behind and nursed her child until she weaned him.	23 Elkana lui répondit: “Fais comme il te semble bon. Reste ici jusqu’à ce que tu l’aies sevré, et que Yahvé fasse comme tu viens de dire.” La femme resta donc, elle allaita son fils jusqu’au jour où il fut sevré.
24 When she had weaned him, she took him up with her, as wel as a three-year-old bul , an ephah offlour and a skin of wine, and took him into the temple of Yahweh at Shiloh; the child was very young.	24 Après qu’elle l’eut sevré, elle le fit monter avec elle à la maison de Yahvé à Silo; elle menait un taureau de trois ans avec une mesure de farine et une outre de vin. L’enfant était encore tout jeune.
25 They sacrificed the bul and led the child to Eli.	25 Ils sacrifièrent le taureau et ils amenèrent l’enfant à Héli.
26 She said, 'If you please, my lord! As you live, my lord, I am the woman who stood beside you here,praying to Yahweh.	26 Anne lui dit: “Pardon, mon seigneur! Aussi vrai que tu vis, mon seigneur, c’est moi la femme qui se tenait ici près de toi pour prier Yahvé.
27 This is the child for which I was praying, and Yahweh has granted me what I asked of him.	27 C’est pour cet enfant que j’ai prié et Yahvé m’a donné ce que je lui demandais.
28 Now I make him over to Yahweh for the whole of his life. He is made over to Yahweh.' They thenworshipped Yahweh there.	28 À mon tour je le cède à Yahvé pour le restant de ses jours: il sera donné à Yahvé.” C’est ainsi qu’il resta là au service de Yahvé.
