1 Samson then went to Gaza and, seeing a prostitute there, went in to her.	1 Samson descendit à Gaza. Il y rencontra une prostituée et entra chez elle.
2 The men of Gaza being told, 'Samson has arrived,' surrounded the place and kept watch for him thewhole night at the town gate. Al that night they were going to make no move, thinking, 'Let us wait untildaybreak, and then kil him.'	2 On le dit aux gens de Gaza: “Samson est venu ici!” Ils organisèrent des rondes et restèrent à l’affût toute la nuit à la porte de la ville. Ils ne bougèrent pas de toute la nuit car ils disaient: “Attendons-le jusqu’au matin, et alors nous le tuerons.”
3 Til midnight, however, Samson stayed in bed, and then at midnight he got up, seized the doors of thetown gate and the two posts as wel ; he tore them up, bar and al , hoisted them on to his shoulders and carriedthem to the top of the hill overlooking Hebron.	3 Samson resta couché jusqu’à minuit. Au milieu de la nuit il se leva, saisit les battants de la porte de la ville avec leurs montants et les arracha avec la traverse. Il les mit sur son épaule et les emmena au sommet de la montagne en face d’Hébron.
4 After this, he fell in love with a woman in the Vale of Sorek; she was called Delilah.	4 Après cela, il s’attacha à une femme de la vallée de Sorek qui s’appelait Dalila.
5 The Philistine chiefs visited her and said, 'Cajole him and find out where his great strength comesfrom, and how we can master him, so that we can bind him and subdue him. In return we shall each give youeleven hundred silver shekels.'	5 Les chefs des Philistins vinrent la trouver et lui dirent: “Fais-lui du charme et tâche de savoir d’où lui vient cette grande force et comment nous pourrions nous rendre maîtres de lui, le ligoter et le dompter. Chacun de nous est prêt à te donner 1 100 sicles d’argent.”
6 Delilah said to Samson, 'Please tel me where your great strength comes from, and what would beneeded to bind and subdue you.'	6 Dalila demanda à Samson: “Dis-moi, je te prie, d’où vient ta force extraordinaire? Ne serait-il pas possible de te ligoter et de te dompter?”
7 Samson replied, 'If I were bound with seven new bowstrings which had not yet been dried, I shouldlose my strength and become like any other man.'	7 Samson lui dit: “Si l’on me liait avec sept cordes neuves qui ne sont pas encore sèches, je perdrais ma force et je serais comme un homme quelconque.”
8 The Philistine chiefs brought Delilah seven new bowstrings which had not yet been dried and she tookthem and bound him with them.	8 Les chefs des Philistins lui apportèrent sept cordes neuves qui n’étaient pas encore sèches, et elle le ligota;
9 She had men concealed in her room, and she shouted, 'The Philistines are on you, Samson!' Then hesnapped the bowstrings as a strand of tow snaps at a touch of the fire. So the secret of his strength remainedunknown.	9 elle avait caché des hommes dans sa chambre. Elle lui cria: “Les Philistins sont sur toi, Samson!” D’un coup, il rompit les cordes comme se rompt le fil d’étoupe quand il sent le brûlé: on n’eut donc pas le secret de sa force.
10 Delilah then said to Samson, 'You have been laughing at me and tel ing me lies. But now please telme what would be needed to bind you.'	10 Dalila dit à Samson: “Tu t’es moqué de moi et tu m’as raconté des mensonges. Tu devrais bien me dire avec quoi il faudrait te lier.”
11 He replied, 'If I were bound tightly with new ropes which have never been used, I should lose mystrength and become like any other man.'	11 Il lui dit: “Si on me liait avec des cordes neuves qui n’ont jamais servi, je perdrais ma force et je serais comme un homme quelconque.”
12 Delilah then took new ropes and bound him with them, and she shouted, 'The Philistines are on you,Samson!' She had men concealed in her room, but he snapped the ropes round his arms like thread.	12 Dalila le lia avec des cordes neuves, puis elle dit: “Les Philistins sont sur toi, Samson!” L’embuscade était prête dans la chambre, mais lui rompit les cordes comme du fil.
13 Delilah then said to Samson, 'Up to now you have been laughing at me and tel ing me lies. Tell mewhat would be needed to bind you.' He replied, 'If you wove the seven locks of my hair into the warp of a clothand beat them together tight with the reed, I should lose my strength and become like any other man.'	13 Dalila dit à Samson: “Maintenant encore tu t’es moqué de moi et tu m’as raconté des mensonges. Dis-moi donc avec quoi il faudrait te lier.” Il répondit: “Si tu tissais les sept tresses de ma chevelure dans la chaîne d’un tissu, si tu les serrais à l’aide d’un peigne de tisserand, je perdrais ma force et je serais comme un homme quelconque.”
14 She lul ed him to sleep, then wove the seven locks of his hair into the warp, beat them together tightwith the reed and shouted, 'The Philistines are on you, Samson!' He woke from his sleep and pul ed out bothreed and warp. So the secret of his strength remained unknown.	14 Elle l’endormit donc, tissa les sept tresses de sa chevelure avec la chaîne d’un tissu, elle les serra à l’aide d’un peigne de tisserand et lui dit: “Les Philistins sont sur toi, Samson!” Il se réveilla de son sommeil, arracha le peigne, la navette et la chaîne.
15 Delilah said to him, 'How can you say that you love me, when your heart is not with me? Three timesnow you have laughed at me and have not told me where your great strength comes from.'	15 Alors elle lui dit: “Comment peux-tu dire que tu m’aimes? Ton cœur n’est pas avec moi, puisque par trois fois tu t’es moqué de moi et tu ne m’as pas dit d’où venait ta grande force.”
16 And day after day she pestered him with her talk, nagging him til he grew sick to death of it.	16 Comme tous les jours elle le fatiguait et le harcelait avec les mêmes questions, il crut qu’il allait en mourir.
17 At last he confided everything to her; he said to her, 'A razor has never touched my head, because Ihave been God's nazirite from my mother's womb. If my head were shorn, then my power would leave me and Ishould lose my strength and become like any other man.'	17 Alors il lui ouvrit le plus secret de son cœur. Il lui dit: “Je suis consacré à Dieu depuis le sein de ma mère, et le rasoir n’est jamais passé sur ma tête. Si j’étais rasé, ma force se retirerait de moi et je deviendrais aussi faible que n’importe qui.”
18 Delilah then realized that he had real y confided in her; she sent for the Philistine princes with themessage, 'Come just once more: he has confided everything to me.' And the Philistine chiefs came to her withthe money in their hands.	18 Cette fois, Dalila vit qu’il lui avait dévoilé les secrets de son cœur. Elle envoya chercher les chefs des Philistins et leur dit: “Venez cette fois, car il m’a dévoilé le plus secret de son cœur.” Les chefs des Philistins se rendirent chez elle et ils avaient en main l’argent.
19 She lul ed Samson to sleep in her lap, summoned a man and had him shear off the seven locks fromhis head. Thus for the first time she got control over him, and his strength left him.	19 Après avoir endormi Samson sur ses genoux, elle appela un homme qui rasa les sept tresses de sa tête et il commença à perdre ses forces: sa force s’était retirée de lui.
20 She cried, 'The Philistines are on you, Samson!' He awoke from sleep, thinking, 'I shal break free as I have done time after time and shake myself clear.' But he did not know that Yahweh had left him.	20 Alors elle dit: “Les Philistins sont sur toi, Samson!” Il se réveilla de son sommeil et il se dit: “Je m’en sortirai comme les autres fois et je me dégagerai.” Mais il ne savait pas que Yahvé s’était retiré loin de lui.
21 The Philistines seized him, put out his eyes and took him down to Gaza. They fettered him with adouble chain of bronze and he spent his time turning the mil in the prison.	21 Les Philistins le saisirent et lui crevèrent les yeux. Ils le firent descendre à Gaza, le lièrent avec une double chaîne de bronze et le mirent à tourner la meule dans la prison.
22 But his hair began to grow again when it had been cut off.	22 Cependant, après qu’il eût été rasé, sa chevelure se mit à repousser.
23 The Philistine chiefs assembled to offer a great sacrifice to Dagon their god. And amid their festivitiesthey said: Into our hands our god has delivered Samson our enemy.	23 C’est alors que les chefs des Philistins se rassemblèrent pour offrir un grand sacrifice à Dagon leur dieu, et on fit la fête. Ils disaient: “Notre dieu a livré entre nos mains notre ennemi Samson.”
24 And as soon as the people saw their god, they acclaimed him, shouting his praises: Into our handsour god has delivered Samson our enemy, the man who laid our country waste and kil ed so many of us.	24 Les gens du peuple le virent et ils louèrent leur dieu en disant: “Notre dieu a livré entre nos mains notre ennemi, qui ravageait le pays et qui faisait tant de morts parmi nous.”
25 And as their hearts were full of joy, they shouted, 'Summon Samson out to amuse us.' So Samsonwas summoned from prison, and he performed feats in front of them; then he was put to stand between thepil ars.	25 Quand ils furent tous bien joyeux, ils dirent: “Appelez Samson et qu’il nous amuse!” On alla chercher Samson dans la prison et il fit des tours sous leurs yeux, puis on le plaça entre les colonnes.
26 Samson then said to the boy who was leading him by the hand, 'Lead me where I can touch thepil ars supporting the building, so that I can lean against them.'	26 Samson dit alors au jeune homme qui le tenait par la main: “Tu devrais me conduire: fais-moi toucher les colonnes sur lesquelles le temple est construit, que je puisse m’appuyer contre elles.”
27 Now the building was crowded with men and women. Al the Philistine chiefs were there, while aboutthree thousand men and women were watching Samson's feats from the terrace.	27 Or le temple était rempli d’hommes et de femmes. Tous les chefs des Philistins étaient là, et sur la terrasse se tenaient environ 3 000 hommes et femmes qui regardaient les jeux donnés par Samson.
28 Samson cal ed on Yahweh and cried out, 'Lord Yahweh, I beg you, remember me; give me strengthagain this once, O God, and let me be revenged on the Philistines at one blow for my two eyes.'	28 Alors Samson invoqua Yahvé et dit: “Je t’en prie, Seigneur Yahvé! Souviens-toi de moi et rends-moi fort une dernière fois. Je voudrais d’un seul coup faire payer aux Philistins mes deux yeux!”
29 And Samson took hold of the two central pil ars supporting the building, and braced himself with hisright arm round one and his left round the other;	29 Samson toucha les deux colonnes du milieu, sur lesquelles le temple était construit, et il s’appuya sur elles: sur l’une de son bras droit, et sur l’autre de son bras gauche.
30 and he shouted, 'Let me die with the Philistines!' He then heaved with al his might, and the buildingfel on the chiefs and on all the people there. Those whom he brought to their death by his death outnumberedthose whom he had done to death during his life.	30 Alors Samson s’écria: “Que je meure avec les Philistins!” Puis de toute sa force il se raidit, et le temple s’effondra sur les chefs et sur tout le peuple qui s’y trouvait. Ceux qu’il entraîna avec lui dans la mort furent plus nombreux que ceux qu’il avait fait mourir durant toute sa vie.
31 His brothers and the whole of his father's family came down and carried him away. They took himback and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the tomb of Manoah his father. He had judged Israel fortwenty years.	31 Ses frères et toute la famille de son père descendirent et l’emportèrent. Ils le remontèrent et l’enterrèrent entre Soréa et Echtaol, dans le tombeau de Manoa son père. Pendant 20 ans il avait jugé Israël.
