1 Jephthah the Gileadite was a valiant warrior. He was a prostitute's son. Gilead was Jephthah's father,	1 Viveva in quel tempo Iefte Galaadita, uomo valorosissimo e guerriero, nato da una donna di mala vita e da Galaad.
2 but Gilead's wife also bore him sons, and the sons of this wife, when they grew up, drove Jephthahaway, saying, 'No share of the paternal heritage for you, since you are a son of another woman.'	2 Or avendo avuto Galaad una moglie che gli aveva dato molti figli, questi, cresciuti in età, cacciarono Iefte dicendogli: « Tu non puoi essere erede nella casa di nostro padre, perchè sei nato da un'altra madre ».
3 Jephthah fled far from his brothers and settled in the territory of Tob. Jephthah enlisted a group ofadventurers who used to go raiding with him.	3 Ed egli, fuggito per star da loro lontano, abitò nella terra di Tob. Presso di lui si radunarono degli uomini miserabili e predoni che lo seguivano come loro capo.
4 It was some time after this that the Ammonites made war on Israel.	4 Or siccome in quei giorni i figli d'Ammon combattevano contro Israele
5 And when the Ammonites had attacked Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah from theterritory of Tob.	5 e gli stavano addosso gli anziani di Galaad andarono nella terra di Tob a prendere Iefte in loro aiuto,
6 'Come', they said, 'and be our commander, so that we can fight the Ammonites.'	6 e gli dissero: « Vieni ad esser nostro capo e a combattere contro i figli d'Ammon ».
7 Jephthah replied to the elders of Gilead, 'Didn't you hate me and drive me out of my father's house?Why come to me now, when you are in trouble?'	7 Ma egli rispose loro: « Non siete quelli che mi hanno odiato e scacciato dalla casa di mio padre, voi che ora venite da me costretti dal bisogno? »
8 The elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, 'That is why we are turning to you now. Come with us; fight theAmmonites and be our chief, chief of al the people living in Gilead.'	8 E i principi di Galaad a lui: « Ma ora siam venuti da te, affinchè tu venga con noi a combattere contro i figli d'Ammon e ad essere capo di tutti coloro che abitano in Galaad».
9 Jephthah then said to the elders of Gilead, 'If you bring me home to fight the Ammonites and Yahwehdefeats them for me, I am to be your chief?'	9 E Iefte disse loro; « Voi è vero, siete venuti da me, affinchè io per voi combatta contro i figli d'Ammon, ma dato che il Signore li dia nelle mie mani, sarò il vostro capo? »
10 And the elders of Gilead then said to Jephthah, 'Yahweh be witness between us, if we do not do asyou have said!'	10 Gli risposero: « Il Signore, che ascolta queste cose, egli stesso è mediatore e testimone che noi adempiremo le nostre promesse ».
11 So Jephthah set off with the elders of Gilead. The people put him at their head as chief andcommander; and Jephthah repeated al his conditions at Mizpah in Yahweh's presence.	11 Allora Iefte andò coi principi di Galaad, e tutto il popolo lo creò suo capo. Ripetute tutte queste parole dinanzi al Signore in Masfa,
12 Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the Ammonites to say to him, 'What do you have against us,for you to come and make war on my country?'	12 Iefte mandò al re dei figli d'Ammon ambasciatori che gli dissero da parte sua: « Che vi è fra me e te che mi sei venuto contro a devastare il mio paese? »
13 The king of the Ammonites replied to Jephthah's messengers, 'The reason is that when Israel cameup from Egypt, they seized my country from the Arnon to the Jabbok and to the Jordan; so now restore it to mepeaceful y.'	13 Il re rispose loro: « Perchè Israele quando salì dall'Egitto, prese il mio territorio dai confini dell'Arnon fino al Iaboc e al Giordano. Or dunque rendimelo in pace ».
14 Jephthah sent messengers back to the king of the Ammonites	14 Iefte mandò di nuovo gli stessi ambasciatori coll'incarico di dire al re di Ammon:
15 with this answer, 'Jephthah says this, "Israel seized neither the country of Moab nor the country of theAmmonites.	15 « Queste cose dice Iefte: Israele non prese la terra di Moab, nè la terra dei figli d'Ammon;
16 When Israel came out of Egypt, they marched through the desert as far as the Sea of Reeds and,having reached Kadesh,	16 perchè, quando uscì dall'Egitto, camminò pel deserto fino al Mar Rosso, e, giunto a Cades,
17 Israel then sent messengers to the king of Edom to say: Please let me pass through your country, butthe king of Edom would not listen. They sent similarly to the king of Moab, but he refused, and Israel remained atKadesh;	17 mandò ambasciatori al re di Edom, dicendo: Lasciami passare per la tua terra. Ma egli non volle accondiscendere a queste preghiere. Mandò pure ambasciatori al re di Moab, che rifiutò sdegnosamente il passaggio. Per questo Israele dimorò in Cades,
18 later, moving on through the desert and skirting the countries of Edom and Moab until arriving to theeast of Moabite territory, the people camped on the other side of the Arnon but did not enter Moabite territory,the Arnon being the Moabite frontier.	18 e poi, girando attorno alla terra di Edom e a quella di Moab, arrivò ad oriente della terra di Moab, e pose il campo di là dell'Arnon, senza volere entrare nel territorio di Moab, di cui l'Arnon è il confine,
19 Israel then sent messengers to Sihon, king of the Amorites, ruling in Heshbon. Israel's message was:Please let me pass through your country to my destination.	19 Israele poi mandò ambasciatori a Sehon, re degli Amorrei, che abitava in Esebon e gli fece dire: Lasciami passare pel tuo paese fino al fiume.
20 But Sihon would not let Israel pass through his territory; he mustered his whole army; they encampedat Jahaz, and he then joined battle with Israel.	20 Ma anche lui, disprezzando le parole d'Israele, non lo lasciò passare pel suo territorio, anzi, radunata innumerevole moltitudine, si mosse contro di lui a Iasa e gli resistè tenacemente.
21 Yahweh, God of Israel, delivered Sihon and his whole army into the power of Israel, who defeatedthem; as the result of which, Israel took possession of the entire territory of the Amorites living in that region.	21 Ma il Signore diede lui e tutto il suo esercito nelle mani d'Israele, che lo sconfìsse e conquistò tutta la terra dell'Amorreo che abitava in quella regione,
22 Israel took possession of all the Amorite territory from the Arnon to the Jabbok and from the desert tothe Jordan.	22 e tutti i suoi confini: dall0Arnon al Iaboc; dal deserto al Giordano.
23 And now that Yahweh, God of Israel, has dispossessed the Amorites before his people Israel, do youthink you can dispossess us?	23 Fu dunque il Signore Dio d'Israele colui che abbattè gli Amorrei contro dei quali combattè Israele suo popolo; e tu vuoi ora posseder la loro terra?
24 Will you not keep as your possession whatever Chemosh, your god, has given you? And, just thesame, we shal keep as ours whatever Yahweh our God has given us, to inherit from those who were before us!	24 Ciò che possiede il tuo dio Camos non ti appartiene forse legittimamente? Così ciò che il Signore nostro Dio ottenne colla vittoria apparterrà a noi;
25 Are you a better man than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he pick a quarrel with Israel? Didhe make war on them?	25 a meno che tu non sia qualche cosa di più di Balac, figlio di Sefor, re di Moab, o tu possa dimostrar che egli mosse querela contro Israele e lo attaccò,
26 When Israel settled in Heshbon and its dependencies, and in Aroer and its dependencies, or in any ofthe towns on the banks of the Arnon (three hundred years ago), why did you not recover them then?	26 quando Israele abitò in Esebon e nei suoi borghi, in Aroer e nei suoi borghi, e in tutte le città presso il Giordano, per trecento anni. Perchè in tanto tempo non tentaste alcun reclamo?
27 I for my part have done you no harm, but you are wronging me by making war on me. Let Yahwehthe Judge give judgement today between the Israelites and the king of the Ammonites." '	27 Non son dunque io che ti fo torto, ma sei tu che agisci male contro di me, intimandomi una guerra ingiusta. Il Signore, arbitro di questo giorno, giudichi lui tra Israele e i figli di Ammon ».
28 But the king of the Ammonites took no notice of the message that Jephthah sent him.	28 Ma il re dei figli d'Ammon non volle accondiscendere alle parole che Iefte gli aveva mandato a dire per mezzo degli ambasciatori.
29 The spirit of Yahweh was on Jephthah, who crossed Gilead and Manasseh, crossed by way ofMizpah in Gilead, and from Mizpah in Gilead crossed into Ammonite territory.	29 Lo spirito del Signore fu sopra Iefte, che, percorso Galaad, Manasse e anche Masfa di Galaad, di là si avanzò contro i figli d'Ammon.
30 And Jephthah made a vow to Yahweh, 'If you deliver the Ammonites into my grasp,	30 Egli fece un voto al Signore dicendo: « Se darai nelle mie mani i figli d'Ammon,
31 the first thing to come out of the doors of my house to meet me when I return in triumph from fightingthe Ammonites shal belong to Yahweh, and I shal sacrifice it as a burnt offering.'	31 il primo che uscirà dalle porte di casa mia e mi verrà incontro quando tornerò in pace dai figli d'Ammon, chiunque sia, l'offrirò in olocausto al Signore ».
32 Jephthah crossed into Ammonite territory to attack them, and Yahweh delivered them into his grasp.	32 Avanzatosi poi contro i figli d'Ammon, per combattere contro di loro, il Signore li diede nelle sue mani.
33 He beat them from Aroer to the border of Minnith (twenty towns) and to Abel-Keramim. It was a verysevere defeat, and the Ammonites were humbled by the Israelites.	33 Egli li percosse da Aroer sino a Menni, venti città, e fino ad Abel che è tra le vigne: diede loro una grande sconfitta, e così i figli di Ammon furono umiliati dai figli d'Israele.
34 As Jephthah returned to his house at Mizpah, his daughter came out to meet him, dancing to thesound of tambourines. She was his only child; apart from her, he had neither son nor daughter.	34 Or mentre Iefte ritornava a casa sua in Masfa, ecco l'unica sua figlia (non aveva altri figli) venirgli incontro con timpani e danze.
35 When he saw her, he tore his clothes and exclaimed, 'Oh my daughter, what misery you havebrought upon me! You have joined those who bring misery into my life! I have made a promise before Yahwehwhich I cannot retract.'	35 Appena l'ebbe veduta, esclamò, stracciandosi le vesti: « Ah! mia figlia, tu mi hai ingannato e ti sei ingannata, perchè io ho aperto la mia bocca al Signore e non potrò fare altrimenti ».
36 She replied, 'Father, you have made a promise to Yahweh; treat me as the promise that you havemade requires, since Yahweh has granted you vengeance on your enemies the Ammonites.'	36 La figlia rispose: « Padre mio, se tu hai aperta la tua bocca al Signore, fammi quanto hai promesso, giacché la vendetta e la vittoria dei tuoi nemici ti è stata accordata».
37 She then said to her father, 'Grant me this! Let me be free for two months. I shal go and wander inthe mountains, and with my companions bewail my virginity.'	37 Poi aggiunse: «Mi sia accordata soltanto questa grazia: permetti che per due mesi io vada girando pei monti, a piangere la mia verginità colle mie compagne! »
38 He replied, 'Go,' and let her go away for two months. So she went away with her companions andbewailed her virginity in the mountains.	38 E il padre le rispose: « Va pure ». E la lasciò andare per due mesi. Ed essa, partita colle sue compagne e amiche, andò a piangere la sua verginità su per i monti.
39 When the two months were over she went back to her father, and he treated her as the vow that hehad uttered bound him. She had remained a virgin. And hence, the custom in Israel	39 Passati poi due mesi, se ne tornò al padre suo, che le fece secondo il voto da lui emesso. Essa non aveva conosciuto uomo. Di qui venne in Israele quest'usanza ancora conservata:
40 for the daughters of Israel to leave home year by year and lament over the daughter of Jephthah theGileadite for four days every year.	40 ogni anno le figlie d'Israele si radunano a piangere per quattro giorni la figlia di Iefte Galaadita.
