1 Jephthah the Gileadite was a valiant warrior. He was a prostitute's son. Gilead was Jephthah's father,	1 - In quel tempo viveva Jefte Galaadita, uomo di gran forza e guerriero, figlio di una meretrice e generato da Galaad.
2 but Gilead's wife also bore him sons, and the sons of this wife, when they grew up, drove Jephthahaway, saying, 'No share of the paternal heritage for you, since you are a son of another woman.'	2 Galaad aveva avuto una moglie dalla quale ebbe vari figliuoli. Costoro, cresciuti che furono, cacciarono Jefte, dicendo: «Tu non potrai essere erede nella casa del nostro padre, essendo nato da una madre diversa».
3 Jephthah fled far from his brothers and settled in the territory of Tob. Jephthah enlisted a group ofadventurers who used to go raiding with him.	3 Perciò egli se ne fuggì e li evitò, andando ad abitare nella terra di Tob e si riunirono attorno a lui dei miserabili e dei ladri, che lo seguivano come loro duce.
4 It was some time after this that the Ammonites made war on Israel.	4 In quei giorni i figli di Ammon combattevano contro Israele
5 And when the Ammonites had attacked Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah from theterritory of Tob.	5 e poichè essi lo stringevano da vicino, i maggiorenti di Galaad andarono per prendere in loro soccorso Jefte della terra di Tob
6 'Come', they said, 'and be our commander, so that we can fight the Ammonites.'	6 e gli dissero: «Vieni e sii nostro capo, e combatti contro i figli di Ammon»;
7 Jephthah replied to the elders of Gilead, 'Didn't you hate me and drive me out of my father's house?Why come to me now, when you are in trouble?'	7 e avendo egli risposto: «Non siete voi quelli che mi avete avuto in odio e mi scacciaste dalla casa del padre mio, ed ora ricorrete a me costretti dalla necessità?».
8 The elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, 'That is why we are turning to you now. Come with us; fight theAmmonites and be our chief, chief of al the people living in Gilead.'	8 I principi di Galaad dissero a Jefte: «Appunto per questo noi siamo venuti ora da te, affinchè tu venga con noi e combatta contro i figli di Ammon e sii condottiero di tutti coloro che abitano in Galaad».
9 Jephthah then said to the elders of Gilead, 'If you bring me home to fight the Ammonites and Yahwehdefeats them for me, I am to be your chief?'	9 Jefte soggiunse: «Se siete venuti veramente a me perchè io combatta per voi contro i figli di Ammon, qualora il Signore me li dia nelle mani, sarò io davvero vostro principe?».
10 And the elders of Gilead then said to Jephthah, 'Yahweh be witness between us, if we do not do asyou have said!'	10 Ed essi risposero: «Il Signore che ascolta queste parole sia nostro garante e testimonio che manterremo le nostre promesse».
11 So Jephthah set off with the elders of Gilead. The people put him at their head as chief andcommander; and Jephthah repeated al his conditions at Mizpah in Yahweh's presence.	11 Andò pertanto Jefte cogli anziani di Galaad e il popolo lo costituì suo capo e Jefte ripetè innanzi al Signore in Masfa tutte le sue parole.
12 Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the Ammonites to say to him, 'What do you have against us,for you to come and make war on my country?'	12 Mandò quindi dei messi al re dei figli di Ammon perchè in suo nome gli dicessero: «Che vi ha tra me e te da venirmi incontro per devastare il mio territorio?».
13 The king of the Ammonites replied to Jephthah's messengers, 'The reason is that when Israel cameup from Egypt, they seized my country from the Arnon to the Jabbok and to the Jordan; so now restore it to mepeaceful y.'	13 E avendo egli risposto a loro: «Quando Israele salì dall'Egitto s'impadronì del mio paese dai confini dell'Arnon fino al Jaboc e al Giordano; ora dunque rendimelo con le buone».
14 Jephthah sent messengers back to the king of the Ammonites	14 Jefte mandò di nuovo de' messi, comandando loro di dire al re di Ammon:
15 with this answer, 'Jephthah says this, "Israel seized neither the country of Moab nor the country of theAmmonites.	15 «Questo dice Jefte: - Israele non tolse la terra di Moab nè la terra dei figliuoli di Ammon,
16 When Israel came out of Egypt, they marched through the desert as far as the Sea of Reeds and,having reached Kadesh,	16 ma quando salì dall'Egitto, camminò pel deserto fino al Mar Rosso e giunse a Cades.
17 Israel then sent messengers to the king of Edom to say: Please let me pass through your country, butthe king of Edom would not listen. They sent similarly to the king of Moab, but he refused, and Israel remained atKadesh;	17 Inviò poi dei messi al re di Edom dicendogli: "Permettimi di passare attraverso al tuo territorio"; ma Edom non volle accondiscendere alle sue preghiere. Mandò anche [dei messi] al re di Moab, il quale pure si rifiutò di concedere il transito. Rimase allora in Cades
18 later, moving on through the desert and skirting the countries of Edom and Moab until arriving to theeast of Moabite territory, the people camped on the other side of the Arnon but did not enter Moabite territory,the Arnon being the Moabite frontier.	18 e aggirò di fianco la terra di Edom e la terra di Moab, venendo nella regione orientale del territorio di Moab e accampandosi al di là dell'Arnon senza penetrare entro i confini dei Moabiti. L'Arnon infatti serve di confine alla terra di Moab.
19 Israel then sent messengers to Sihon, king of the Amorites, ruling in Heshbon. Israel's message was:Please let me pass through your country to my destination.	19 Israele mandò altresì dei messi a Seon re degli Amorrei, il quale abitava in Esebon e gli disse: "Permettimi di passare attraverso il tuo territorio per arrivare al fiume".
20 But Sihon would not let Israel pass through his territory; he mustered his whole army; they encampedat Jahaz, and he then joined battle with Israel.	20 Ma anch'egli sprezzò le parole d'Israele, e si rifiutò di lasciarlo passare entro i suoi confini; anzi, radunata una moltitudine innumerevole, mosse contro di lui in Iasa per opporgli forte resistenza.
21 Yahweh, God of Israel, delivered Sihon and his whole army into the power of Israel, who defeatedthem; as the result of which, Israel took possession of the entire territory of the Amorites living in that region.	21 Ma il Signore lo abbandonò nelle mani di Israele insieme al suo esercito che fu sbaragliato. Così Israele possedette tutto il territorio degli Amorrei, che abitavano quella regione,
22 Israel took possession of all the Amorite territory from the Arnon to the Jabbok and from the desert tothe Jordan.	22 e tutti i loro confini dall'Arnon fino al Jaboc e dal deserto fino al Giordano.
23 And now that Yahweh, God of Israel, has dispossessed the Amorites before his people Israel, do youthink you can dispossess us?	23 Adunque il Signore Dio d'Israele debellò gli Amorrei quando gli Israeliti, il popolo di Dio, dovettero combattere contro di lui. Ed ora tu ne vuoi possedere il territorio?
24 Will you not keep as your possession whatever Chemosh, your god, has given you? And, just thesame, we shal keep as ours whatever Yahweh our God has given us, to inherit from those who were before us!	24 Non ti son forse dovute a pieno diritto quelle terre che appartengono al tuo dio Camos? Ebbene anche i territori conquistati dal Signore Dio nostro come vincitore diventeranno nostro possedimento;
25 Are you a better man than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he pick a quarrel with Israel? Didhe make war on them?	25 a meno che io non debba considerarti più forte di Balac, figlio di Sefor, re di Moab, oppure sii in grado di mostrarmi che egli si querelò contro Israele e combattè contro di lui
26 When Israel settled in Heshbon and its dependencies, and in Aroer and its dependencies, or in any ofthe towns on the banks of the Arnon (three hundred years ago), why did you not recover them then?	26 quando questi abitò in Esebon e in tutti i suoi villaggi, come pure in Aroer e in tutte le sue ville e le sue città fino al Giordano per lo spazio di trecent'anni. Perchè in un lasso di tempo così grande non hai fatto nessun tentativo per reclamarle?
27 I for my part have done you no harm, but you are wronging me by making war on me. Let Yahwehthe Judge give judgement today between the Israelites and the king of the Ammonites." '	27 Non io pertanto compio un'ingiustizia verso di te, ma tu agisci male verso di me, dichiarando a me una guerra non giusta. Il Signore, da giusto arbitro, decida oggi tra Israele e i figli di Ammon-».
28 But the king of the Ammonites took no notice of the message that Jephthah sent him.	28 Il re dei figli di Ammon non si lasciò persuadere dalle parole, che Jefte gli aveva fatto dire per mezzo dei suoi messi.
29 The spirit of Yahweh was on Jephthah, who crossed Gilead and Manasseh, crossed by way ofMizpah in Gilead, and from Mizpah in Gilead crossed into Ammonite territory.	29 Jefte allora, investito dallo spirito del Signore, si diede a percorrere Galaad, Manasse, Masfa di Galaad e poi andando alla volta dei figli di Ammon
30 And Jephthah made a vow to Yahweh, 'If you deliver the Ammonites into my grasp,	30 fece al Signore un voto di questa natura: «Se mi darai nelle mani i figli di Ammon,
31 the first thing to come out of the doors of my house to meet me when I return in triumph from fightingthe Ammonites shal belong to Yahweh, and I shal sacrifice it as a burnt offering.'	31 il primo che uscirà e mi verrà incontro alle porte della mia casa, allorquando io ritornerò vincitore dei figli di Ammon, l'offrirò in olocausto al Signore».
32 Jephthah crossed into Ammonite territory to attack them, and Yahweh delivered them into his grasp.	32 Andato Jefte contro i figli di Ammon per combatterli, il Signore glieli diede nelle mani.
33 He beat them from Aroer to the border of Minnith (twenty towns) and to Abel-Keramim. It was a verysevere defeat, and the Ammonites were humbled by the Israelites.	33 Ed egli inflisse loro una grandissima sconfitta da Aroer fino a Mennit, e fino ad Abel, che è piantata di vigne, [prendendo loro] venti città, e così i figli di Ammon furono umiliati dinanzi ai figli d'Israele.
34 As Jephthah returned to his house at Mizpah, his daughter came out to meet him, dancing to thesound of tambourines. She was his only child; apart from her, he had neither son nor daughter.	34 Ritornatosene poi Jefte in Masfa verso la sua casa, gli mosse incontro con cembali e danze l'unica figlia, giacchè egli non avea altri figliuoli.
35 When he saw her, he tore his clothes and exclaimed, 'Oh my daughter, what misery you havebrought upon me! You have joined those who bring misery into my life! I have made a promise before Yahwehwhich I cannot retract.'	35 Al vederla si stracciò le vesti e disse: «Ahimè, figlia mia, tu mi hai ingannato e ti sei ingannata anche tu: ho parlato al Signore e non mi è possibile mancar di parola!».
36 She replied, 'Father, you have made a promise to Yahweh; treat me as the promise that you havemade requires, since Yahweh has granted you vengeance on your enemies the Ammonites.'	36 Essa gli rispose: «Padre mio, se tu hai parlato col Signore fa' tutto ciò che hai promesso, poichè egli ti ha concesso di vendicarti de' tuoi nemici e di averne vittoria».
37 She then said to her father, 'Grant me this! Let me be free for two months. I shal go and wander inthe mountains, and with my companions bewail my virginity.'	37 Poi disse al padre: «Concedimi questa sola cosa di cui ti prego: lasciami andar vagando per due mesi sui monti a piangere colle mie compagne la mia verginità».
38 He replied, 'Go,' and let her go away for two months. So she went away with her companions andbewailed her virginity in the mountains.	38 Le rispose: «Va' pure», e la lasciò [andare] per due mesi. Andatesene colle sue amiche e compagne, piangeva fra le montagne la sua verginità
39 When the two months were over she went back to her father, and he treated her as the vow that hehad uttered bound him. She had remained a virgin. And hence, the custom in Israel	39 e passati i due mesi tornò da suo padre, il quale fece sopra di lei, che non avea ancora conosciuto uomo, quanto avea promesso. Da quel tempo invalse in Israele e venne poi perpetuandosi il costume
40 for the daughters of Israel to leave home year by year and lament over the daughter of Jephthah theGileadite for four days every year.	40 di riunirsi ogni anno le figlie d'Israele a piangere per quattro giorni la figlia di Jefte Galaadita.
