1 Jephthah the Gileadite was a valiant warrior. He was a prostitute's son. Gilead was Jephthah's father,	1 Or Jephté de Galaad était un courageux guerrier. Il était fils d’une prostituée, mais son père était Galaad.
2 but Gilead's wife also bore him sons, and the sons of this wife, when they grew up, drove Jephthahaway, saying, 'No share of the paternal heritage for you, since you are a son of another woman.'	2 La femme de Galaad lui avait donné des fils, et quand ils furent grands ils chassèrent Jephté: “Tu n’auras pas de part d’héritage, lui dirent-ils, dans la maison de notre père, tu n’es que le fils d’une étrangère.”
3 Jephthah fled far from his brothers and settled in the territory of Tob. Jephthah enlisted a group ofadventurers who used to go raiding with him.	3 Jephté s’éloigna donc de ses frères et s’installa au pays de Tob. Des gens de rien se rassemblèrent autour de Jephté et firent campagne avec lui.
4 It was some time after this that the Ammonites made war on Israel.	4 C’est à ce moment-là que les Ammonites attaquèrent Israël.
5 And when the Ammonites had attacked Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah from theterritory of Tob.	5 Les anciens de Galaad allèrent alors chercher Jephté au pays de Tob
6 'Come', they said, 'and be our commander, so that we can fight the Ammonites.'	6 et ils lui dirent: “Viens! Tu seras notre chef et nous combattrons contre les Ammonites.”
7 Jephthah replied to the elders of Gilead, 'Didn't you hate me and drive me out of my father's house?Why come to me now, when you are in trouble?'	7 Mais Jephté répondit aux anciens de Galaad: “N’est-ce pas vous qui m’avez méprisé et chassé de la maison de mon père? Et maintenant vous venez me trouver parce que vous êtes en danger!”
8 The elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, 'That is why we are turning to you now. Come with us; fight theAmmonites and be our chief, chief of al the people living in Gilead.'	8 Les anciens de Galaad dirent à Jephté: “C’est bien pour cela que nous sommes revenus vers toi aujourd’hui, pour que tu marches à notre tête et que tu combattes contre les Ammonites; nous voulons te faire chef de tous les habitants de Galaad.”
9 Jephthah then said to the elders of Gilead, 'If you bring me home to fight the Ammonites and Yahwehdefeats them for me, I am to be your chief?'	9 Jephté répondit aux anciens de Galaad: “Si vous me faites revenir pour combattre les Ammonites et que Yahvé les livre entre mes mains, je serai votre chef.”
10 And the elders of Gilead then said to Jephthah, 'Yahweh be witness between us, if we do not do asyou have said!'	10 Les anciens de Galaad dirent à Jephté: “Yahvé sera témoin contre nous si nous n’agissons pas comme tu viens de dire.”
11 So Jephthah set off with the elders of Gilead. The people put him at their head as chief andcommander; and Jephthah repeated al his conditions at Mizpah in Yahweh's presence.	11 Jephté partit donc avec les anciens de Galaad, et le peuple le mit à sa tête comme son chef et son général. Puis à Mispa, en présence de Yahvé, Jephté répéta toutes ses conditions.
12 Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the Ammonites to say to him, 'What do you have against us,for you to come and make war on my country?'	12 Jephté envoya des hommes au roi des Ammonites avec ce message: “Pourquoi viens-tu te mêler de mes affaires et me faire la guerre dans mon pays?”
13 The king of the Ammonites replied to Jephthah's messengers, 'The reason is that when Israel cameup from Egypt, they seized my country from the Arnon to the Jabbok and to the Jordan; so now restore it to mepeaceful y.'	13 Le roi des Ammonites répondit aux messagers de Jephté: “C’est parce que les Israélites se sont emparés de mon territoire depuis l’Arnon jusqu’au Yabok et au Jourdain lorsqu’ils sont arrivés d’Égypte. Maintenant donc, rends-le de bon gré.”
14 Jephthah sent messengers back to the king of the Ammonites	14 De nouveau, Jephté envoya des messagers au roi des Ammonites.
15 with this answer, 'Jephthah says this, "Israel seized neither the country of Moab nor the country of theAmmonites.	15 Il lui fit dire de sa part: “Israël ne s’est pas emparé du pays de Moab, ni du pays des Ammonites.
16 When Israel came out of Egypt, they marched through the desert as far as the Sea of Reeds and,having reached Kadesh,	16 Lorsque les Israélites sont montés d’Égypte, ils ont marché dans le désert jusqu’à la mer des Roseaux et ils sont arrivés à Qadesh.
17 Israel then sent messengers to the king of Edom to say: Please let me pass through your country, butthe king of Edom would not listen. They sent similarly to the king of Moab, but he refused, and Israel remained atKadesh;	17 Alors Israël envoya des messagers au roi d’Édom pour lui dire: ‘Laisse-moi traverser ton pays.’ Mais le roi d’Édom refusa. Ils envoya de même des messagers au roi de Moab qui refusa aussi. Alors Israël séjourna à Qadesh.
18 later, moving on through the desert and skirting the countries of Edom and Moab until arriving to theeast of Moabite territory, the people camped on the other side of the Arnon but did not enter Moabite territory,the Arnon being the Moabite frontier.	18 “Il marcha ensuite dans le désert, contourna le pays d’Édom et le pays de Moab, et arriva par l’est du pays de Moab. Il installa son camp au-delà de l’Arnon, mais il n’entra pas dans le territoire de Moab, puisque sa frontière c’est l’Arnon.
19 Israel then sent messengers to Sihon, king of the Amorites, ruling in Heshbon. Israel's message was:Please let me pass through your country to my destination.	19 “Ensuite Israël envoya des messagers à Sihon, roi des Amorites, qui régnait à Heshbon. Israël lui dit: ‘Laisse-nous traverser ton pays jusqu’au lieu où je vais.’
20 But Sihon would not let Israel pass through his territory; he mustered his whole army; they encampedat Jahaz, and he then joined battle with Israel.	20 Mais Sihon refusa de laisser Israël traverser son pays. Sihon rassembla même tous ses gens, ils montèrent leur camp à Yahas et engagèrent le combat contre Israël.
21 Yahweh, God of Israel, delivered Sihon and his whole army into the power of Israel, who defeatedthem; as the result of which, Israel took possession of the entire territory of the Amorites living in that region.	21 Yahvé, le Dieu d’Israël, livra Sihon et toute son armée entre les mains d’Israël qui les écrasa. Et Israël s’empara de tout le pays des Amorites qui habitaient la région.
22 Israel took possession of all the Amorite territory from the Arnon to the Jabbok and from the desert tothe Jordan.	22 Ensuite, il conquit tout le territoire des Amorites, depuis l’Arnon jusqu’au Yabok, et depuis le désert jusqu’au Jourdain.
23 And now that Yahweh, God of Israel, has dispossessed the Amorites before his people Israel, do youthink you can dispossess us?	23 “Maintenant que Yahvé, le Dieu d’Israël, a dépossédé les Amorites en faveur de son peuple, tu voudrais à ton tour déposséder Israël?
24 Will you not keep as your possession whatever Chemosh, your god, has given you? And, just thesame, we shal keep as ours whatever Yahweh our God has given us, to inherit from those who were before us!	24 Si tu te considères propriétaire de ce que Kémoch, ton dieu, t’a donné, pourquoi veux-tu nous prendre ce que Yahvé notre Dieu nous a donné?
25 Are you a better man than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he pick a quarrel with Israel? Didhe make war on them?	25 Te crois-tu plus fort que Balak, fils de Sipor, le roi de Moab? A-t-il pu résister à Israël? A-t-il pu triompher de lui?
26 When Israel settled in Heshbon and its dependencies, and in Aroer and its dependencies, or in any ofthe towns on the banks of the Arnon (three hundred years ago), why did you not recover them then?	26 Voici plus de 300 ans qu’Israël habite à Heshbon et dans ses dépendances, dans Aroër et ses dépendances et dans toutes les villes qui sont sur les bords de l’Arnon. Pourquoi ne les avez-vous pas libérées durant tout ce temps?
27 I for my part have done you no harm, but you are wronging me by making war on me. Let Yahwehthe Judge give judgement today between the Israelites and the king of the Ammonites." '	27 Je ne t’ai pas fait de tort, c’est toi qui as mal agi envers moi en me faisant la guerre. Que Yahvé, le Juge, juge aujourd’hui entre les Israélites et les Ammonites.”
28 But the king of the Ammonites took no notice of the message that Jephthah sent him.	28 Mais le roi des Ammonites n’écouta pas les paroles que Jephté lui adressait.
29 The spirit of Yahweh was on Jephthah, who crossed Gilead and Manasseh, crossed by way ofMizpah in Gilead, and from Mizpah in Gilead crossed into Ammonite territory.	29 L’esprit de Yahvé s’empara de Jephté. Il traversa Galaad et Manassé, puis il passa par Mispa-de-Galaad et, de Mispa-de-Galaad, arriva chez les Ammonites.
30 And Jephthah made a vow to Yahweh, 'If you deliver the Ammonites into my grasp,	30 Il fit ce vœu à Yahvé: “Si tu livres les Ammonites entre mes mains,
31 the first thing to come out of the doors of my house to meet me when I return in triumph from fightingthe Ammonites shal belong to Yahweh, and I shal sacrifice it as a burnt offering.'	31 le premier qui passera la porte de ma maison pour venir à ma rencontre après ma victoire sur les Ammonites, il sera pour Yahvé et je le sacrifierai par le feu.”
32 Jephthah crossed into Ammonite territory to attack them, and Yahweh delivered them into his grasp.	32 Jephté passa donc sur les terres des Ammonites pour les combattre, et Yahvé les livra entre ses mains.
33 He beat them from Aroer to the border of Minnith (twenty towns) and to Abel-Keramim. It was a verysevere defeat, and the Ammonites were humbled by the Israelites.	33 Il les battit depuis Aroër jusqu’aux environs de Minnit (il s’empara donc de 20 villes) et jusqu’à Abel-Kéramim. Ce fut une très grande défaite pour les Ammonites, ils furent dès lors soumis aux Israélites.
34 As Jephthah returned to his house at Mizpah, his daughter came out to meet him, dancing to thesound of tambourines. She was his only child; apart from her, he had neither son nor daughter.	34 Or, lorsque Jephté regagnait sa maison à Mispa, sa fille sortit à sa rencontre avec des tambourins et des chœurs. Elle était son unique enfant; en dehors d’elle il n’avait ni fils ni fille.
35 When he saw her, he tore his clothes and exclaimed, 'Oh my daughter, what misery you havebrought upon me! You have joined those who bring misery into my life! I have made a promise before Yahwehwhich I cannot retract.'	35 Quand il l’aperçut, il déchira ses vêtements et dit: “Ah, ma fille, tu me mets par terre! Et c’est toi qui viens m’apporter le malheur! J’ai promis à Yahvé sans réfléchir, et maintenant je ne puis revenir en arrière.”
36 She replied, 'Father, you have made a promise to Yahweh; treat me as the promise that you havemade requires, since Yahweh has granted you vengeance on your enemies the Ammonites.'	36 Elle lui répondit: “Mon père, puisque Yahvé a tiré vengeance de tes ennemis, les Ammonites, même si tu as promis trop vite à Yahvé, tu dois agir envers moi selon la parole qui est sortie de ta bouche.”
37 She then said to her father, 'Grant me this! Let me be free for two months. I shal go and wander inthe mountains, and with my companions bewail my virginity.'	37 Et elle dit à son père: “Accorde-moi ceci: Laisse-moi un délai de deux mois pour que j’aille errer sur les monts avec mes compagnes et pleurer cette mort quand je suis encore vierge.”
38 He replied, 'Go,' and let her go away for two months. So she went away with her companions andbewailed her virginity in the mountains.	38 Il lui répondit: “Va!” et il la laissa partir pour deux mois. Elle s’en alla donc avec ses compagnes pour pleurer sur les monts cette mort quand elle était encore vierge.
39 When the two months were over she went back to her father, and he treated her as the vow that hehad uttered bound him. She had remained a virgin. And hence, the custom in Israel	39 Au bout de deux mois elle revint vers son père, et il accomplit envers elle le vœu qu’il avait fait. Elle n’avait pas connu d’homme. Depuis c’est une coutume en Israël
40 for the daughters of Israel to leave home year by year and lament over the daughter of Jephthah theGileadite for four days every year.	40 que chaque année les filles d’Israël aillent se lamenter sur la fille de Jephté de Galaad.
