NEW JERUSALEMBIBLIA
Only faith can guarantee the blessings that we hope for, or prove the existence of realities that areunseen.1 La fe es garantía de lo que se espera; la prueba de las realidades que no se ven.
It is for their faith that our ancestors are acknowledged.2 Por ella fueron alabados nuestros mayores.
It is by faith that we understand that the ages were created by a word from God, so that from theinvisible the visible world came to be.3 Por la fe, sabemos que el universo fue formado por la palabra de Dios, de manera que lo que se ve resultase de lo que no aparece.
It was because of his faith that Abel offered God a better sacrifice than Cain, and for that he wasacknowledged as upright when God himself made acknowledgement of his offerings. Though he is dead, he stillspeaks by faith.4 Por la fe, ofreció Abel a Dios un sacrificio más excelente que Caín, por ella fue declarado justo, con la aprobación que dio Dios a sus ofrendas; y por ella, aun muerto, habla todavía.
It was because of his faith that Enoch was taken up and did not experience death: he was no more,because God took him; because before his assumption he was acknowledged to have pleased God.5 Por la fe, Henoc fue trasladado, de modo que no vio la muerte y no se le halló, porque le trasladó Dios. Porque antes de contar su traslado, la Escritura da en su favor testimonio de haber agradado a Dios.
Now it is impossible to please God without faith, since anyone who comes to him must believe that heexists and rewards those who seek him.6 Ahora bien, sin fe es imposible agradarle, pues el que se acerca a Dios ha de creer que existe y que recompensa a los que le buscan.
It was through his faith that Noah, when he had been warned by God of something that had neverbeen seen before, took care to build an ark to save his family. His faith was a judgement on the world, and hewas able to claim the uprightness which comes from faith.7 Por la fe, Noé, advertido por Dios de lo que aún no se veía, con religioso temor construyó un arca para salvar a su familia; por la fe, condenó al mundo y llegó a ser heredero de la justicia según la fe.
It was by faith that Abraham obeyed the cal to set out for a country that was the inheritance given tohim and his descendants, and that he set out without knowing where he was going.8 Por la fe, Abraham, al ser llamado por Dios, obedeció y salió para el lugar que había de recibir en herencia, y salió sin saber a dónde iba.
By faith he sojourned in the Promised Land as though it were not his, living in tents with Isaac andJacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise.9 Por la fe, peregrinó por la Tierra Prometida como en tierra extraña, habitando en tiendas, lo mismo que Isaac y Jacob, coherederos de las mismas promesas.
He looked forward to the wel -founded city, designed and built by God.10 Pues esperaba la ciudad asentada sobre cimientos, cuyo arquitecto y constructor es Dios.
It was equal y by faith that Sarah, in spite of being past the age, was made able to conceive,because she believed that he who had made the promise was faithful to it.11 Por la fe, también Sara recibió, aun fuera de la edad apropiada, vigor para ser madre, pues tuvo como digno de fe al que se lo prometía.
Because of this, there came from one man, and one who already had the mark of death on him,descendants as numerous as the stars of heaven and the grains of sand on the seashore which cannot becounted.12 Por lo cual también de uno solo y ya gastado nacieron hijos, numerosos como las estrellas del cielo, incontables como las arenas de las orillas del mar.
Al these died in faith, before receiving any of the things that had been promised, but they saw themin the far distance and welcomed them, recognising that they were only strangers and nomads on earth.13 En la fe murieron todos ellos, sin haber conseguido el objeto de las promesas: viéndolas y saludándolas desde lejos y confesándose extraños y forasteros sobre la tierra.
People who use such terms about themselves make it quite plain that they are in search of ahomeland.14 Los que tal dicen, claramente dan a entender que van en busca de una patria;
If they had meant the country they came from, they would have had the opportunity to return to it;15 pues si hubiesen pensado en la tierra de la que habían salido, habrían tenido ocasión de retornar a ella.
but in fact they were longing for a better homeland, their heavenly homeland. That is why God is notashamed to be cal ed their God, since he has founded the city for them.16 Más bien aspiran a una mejor, a la celestial. Por eso Dios no se avergüenza de ellos, de ser llamado Dios suyo, pues les tiene preparada una ciudad...
It was by faith that Abraham, when put to the test, offered up Isaac. He offered to sacrifice his onlyson even though he had yet to receive what had been promised,17 Por la fe, Abraham, sometido a la prueba, presentó a Isaac como ofrenda, y el que había recibido las promesas, ofrecía a su unigénito,
and he had been told: Isaac is the one through whom your name will be carried on.18 respecto del cual se le había dicho: Por Isaac tendrás descendencia.
He was confident that God had the power even to raise the dead; and so, figuratively speaking, hewas given back Isaac from the dead.19 Pensaba que poderoso era Dios aun para resucitar de entre los muertos. Por eso lo recobró para que Isaac fuera también figura.
It was by faith that this same Isaac gave his blessing to Jacob and Esau for the stil distant future.20 Por la fe, bendijo Isaac a Jacob y Esaú en orden al futuro.
By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of Joseph's sons, bowed in reverence, as he leanton his staff.21 Por la fe, Jacob, moribundo, bendijo a cada uno de los hijos de José, y se inclinó apoyado en la cabeza de su bastón.
It was by faith that, when he was about to die, Joseph mentioned the Exodus of the Israelites andgave instructions about his own remains.22 Por la fe, José, moribundo, evocó el éxodo de los hijos de Israel, y dio órdenes respecto de sus huesos.
It was by faith that Moses, when he was born, was kept hidden by his parents for three months;because they saw that he was a fine child; they were not afraid of the royal edict.23 Por la fe, Moisés, recién nacido, fue durante tres meses ocultado por sus padres, pues vieron que el niño era hermoso y no temieron el edicto del rey.
It was by faith that, when he was grown up, Moses refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh'sdaughter24 Por la fe, Moisés, ya adulto, rehusó ser llamado hijo de una hija de Faraón,
and chose to be ill-treated in company with God's people rather than to enjoy the transitory pleasuresof sin.25 prefiriendo ser maltratado con el pueblo de Dios a disfrutar el efímero goce del pecado,
He considered that the humiliations offered to the Anointed were something more precious than althe treasures of Egypt, because he had his eyes fixed on the reward.26 estimando como riqueza mayor que los tesoros de Egipto el oprobio de Cristo, porque tenía los ojos puestos en la recompensa.
It was by faith that he left Egypt without fear of the king's anger; he held to his purpose like someonewho could see the Invisible.27 Por la fe, salió de Egipto sin temer la ira del rey; se mantuvo firme como si viera al invisible.
It was by faith that he kept the Passover and sprinkled the blood to prevent the Destroyer fromtouching any of their first-born sons.28 Por la fe, celebró la Pascua e hizo la aspersión de sangre para que el Exterminador no tocase a los primogénitos de Israel.
It was by faith they crossed the Red Sea as easily as dry land, while the Egyptians, trying to do thesame, were drowned.29 Por la fe, atravesaron el mar Rojo como por una tierra seca; mientras que los egipcios intentando lo mismo, fueron tragados.
It was through faith that the wal s of Jericho fel down when the people had marched round them forseven days.30 Por la fe, se derrumbaron los muros de Jericó, después de ser rodeados durante siete días.
It was by faith that Rahab the prostitute welcomed the spies and so was not killed with theunbelievers.31 Por la fe, la ramera Rajab no pereció con los incrédulos, por haber acogido amistosamente a los exploradores.
What more shal I say? There is not time for me to give an account of Gideon, Barak, Samson,Jephthah, or of David, Samuel and the prophets.32 Y ¿a qué continuar? Pues me faltaría el tiempo si hubiera de hablar sobre Gedeón, Barac, Sansón, Jefté, David, Samuel y los profetas.
These were men who through faith conquered kingdoms, did what was upright and earned thepromises. They could keep a lion's mouth shut,33 Estos, por la fe, sometieron reinos, hicieron justicia, alcanzaron las promesas, cerraron la boca a los leones;
put out blazing fires and emerge unscathed from battle. They were weak people who were givenstrength to be brave in war and drive back foreign invaders.34 apagaron la violencia del fuego, escaparon del filo de la espada, curaron de sus infermedades, fueron valientes en la guerra, rechazando ejércitos extranjeros;
Some returned to their wives from the dead by resurrection; and others submitted to torture, refusingrelease so that they would rise again to a better life.35 las mujeres recobraban resucitados a sus muertos. Unos fueron torturados, rehusando la liberación por conseguir una resurrección mejor;
Some had to bear being pil oried and flogged, or even chained up in prison.36 otros soportaron burlas y azotes, y hasta cadenas y prisiones;
They were stoned, or sawn in half, or kil ed by the sword; they were homeless, and wore only theskins of sheep and goats; they were in want and hardship, and maltreated.37 apedreados, torturados, aserrados, muertos a espada; anduvieron errantes cubiertos de pieles de oveja y de cabras; faltos de todo; oprimidos y maltratados,
They were too good for the world and they wandered in deserts and mountains and in caves andravines.38 ¡hombres de los que no era digno el mundo!, errantes por desiertos y montañas, por cavernas y antros de la tierra.
These al won acknowledgement through their faith, but they did not receive what was promised,39 Y todos ellos, aunque alabados por su fe, no consiguieron el objeto de las promesas.
since God had made provision for us to have something better, and they were not to reach perfectionexcept with us.40 Dios tenía ya dispuesto algo mejor para nosotros, de modo que no llegaran ellos sin nosotros a la perfección.
