NEW JERUSALEMBIBLES DES PEUPLES
Only faith can guarantee the blessings that we hope for, or prove the existence of realities that areunseen.1 La foi, c’est s’accrocher à ce qu’on espère, c’est la certitude de choses qu’on ne voit pas.
It is for their faith that our ancestors are acknowledged.2 C’est cela même qu’on donne en exemple chez nos aînés.
It is by faith that we understand that the ages were created by a word from God, so that from theinvisible the visible world came to be.3 C’est la foi lorsque nous croyons que les étapes de la création ont été agencées par une parole de Dieu, et que les choses visibles proviennent de réalités invisibles.
It was because of his faith that Abel offered God a better sacrifice than Cain, and for that he wasacknowledged as upright when God himself made acknowledgement of his offerings.
It was because of his faith that Enoch was taken up and did not experience death: he was no more, because God took him; because before his assumption he was acknowledged to have pleased God.5 C’est la foi encore lorsque Hénok est enlevé au lieu de passer par la mort: on ne le vit plus car Dieu l’avait enlevé.
Now it is impossible to please God without faith, since anyone who comes to him must believe that heexists and rewards those who seek him.6 et sans la foi il est impossible de lui plaire.
It was through his faith that Noah, when he had been warned by God of something that had neverbeen seen before, took care to build an ark to save his family. His faith was a judgement on the world, and hewas able to claim the uprightness which comes from faith.7 Quand Noé fut averti d’événements qu’on ne pouvait prévoir, c’est sa foi qui lui fit construire l’Arche où il devait se sauver avec sa famille.
It was by faith that Abraham obeyed the cal to set out for a country that was the inheritance given tohim and his descendants, and that he set out without knowing where he was going.8 Quand Abraham fut appelé, c’est la foi qui le fit obéir et partir vers le lieu qu’il devait recevoir en héritage, car il partit sans savoir où il allait.
By faith he sojourned in the Promised Land as though it were not his, living in tents with Isaac andJacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise.9 C’est la foi qui l’a amené à rester sur cette terre promise qui n’était pas encore sienne, et il a vécu là sous la tente, de même qu’Isaac et Jacob, héritiers de la même promesse.
He looked forward to the wel -founded city, designed and built by God.10 C’est qu’ils attendaient la cité aux solides fondations dont Dieu est l’architecte et le réalisateur.
It was equal y by faith that Sarah, in spite of being past the age, was made able to conceive, because she believed that he who had made the promise was faithful to it.11 Par la foi il fut capable d’avoir un fils alors qu’il avait déjà passé l’âge, et que Sara était stérile; car il eut confiance en celui qui promettait.
Because of this, there came from one man, and one who already had the mark of death on him, descendants as numerous as the stars of heaven and the grains of sand on the seashore which cannot becounted.12 C’est ainsi que d’un seul homme, et déjà impuissant, est sortie une multitude nombreuse comme les étoiles des cieux, semblable aux grains de sable sur le rivage.
Al these died in faith, before receiving any of the things that had been promised, but they saw themin the far distance and welcomed them, recognising that they were only strangers and nomads on earth.13 Tous sont morts en croyants.
People who use such terms about themselves make it quite plain that they are in search of ahomeland.14 Cette façon de parler montre qu’ils cherchaient une patrie.
If they had meant the country they came from, they would have had the opportunity to return to it;15 Car s’ils regrettaient leur patrie d’origine, ils pouvaient y retourner.
but in fact they were longing for a better homeland, their heavenly homeland. That is why God is notashamed to be cal ed their God, since he has founded the city for them.16 Mais non, c’est une autre meilleure qu’ils désiraient, celle du ciel.
It was by faith that Abraham, when put to the test, offered up Isaac. He offered to sacrifice his onlyson even though he had yet to receive what had been promised,17 Quand Abraham fut mis à l’épreuve, c’est la foi qui lui fit sacrifier Isaac, car il s’agissait d’offrir son fils unique, celui qui devait jouir de la promesse.
and he had been told: Isaac is the one through whom your name will be carried on.18 Il lui avait bien été dit: Les enfants d’Isaac seront ta vraie descendance.
He was confident that God had the power even to raise the dead; and so, figuratively speaking, hewas given back Isaac from the dead.19 Mais il pensa que Dieu était capable même de ressusciter les morts, et il retrouva ce fils, ce qui avait un sens pour l’avenir.
It was by faith that this same Isaac gave his blessing to Jacob and Esau for the stil distant future.20 La foi dans l’avenir était là lorsque Isaac bénit Jacob et Ésaü.
By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of Joseph's sons, bowed in reverence, as he leanton his staff.21 La foi était encore là lorsque Jacob mourant bénit séparément les fils de Joseph; on dit qu’il s’appuya sur son bâton pour adorer.
It was by faith that, when he was about to die, Joseph mentioned the Exodus of the Israelites andgave instructions about his own remains.22 La foi était là lorsque Joseph annonça aux enfants d’Israël leur sortie d’Égypte et donna des ordres pour ses propres ossements.
It was by faith that Moses, when he was born, was kept hidden by his parents for three months;because they saw that he was a fine child; they were not afraid of the royal edict.23 À la naissance de Moïse, c’est la foi de ses parents qui leur fit cacher le bébé durant trois mois: ils virent que l’enfant était beau, et ils ne craignirent pas l’ordre du roi.
It was by faith that, when he was grown up, Moses refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh'sdaughter24 C’est la foi encore lorsque Moïse devenu grand refuse de passer pour un fils de la fille du Pharaon,
and chose to be ill-treated in company with God's people rather than to enjoy the transitory pleasuresof sin.25 et il préfère souffrir avec le peuple de Dieu plutôt que de rester avec la joie bien courte du péché.
He considered that the humiliations offered to the Anointed were something more precious than althe treasures of Egypt, because he had his eyes fixed on the reward.26 Car il sait qu’il y aura une récompense, et il comprend que l’humiliation avec le Christ a plus de valeur que les richesses de l’Égypte.
It was by faith that he left Egypt without fear of the king's anger; he held to his purpose like someonewho could see the Invisible.27 C’est la foi encore lorsqu’il quitte l’Égypte.
It was by faith that he kept the Passover and sprinkled the blood to prevent the Destroyer fromtouching any of their first-born sons.28 C’est la foi lorsqu’il sacrifie la Pâque et fait l’aspersion du sang pour empêcher l’Exterminateur de toucher à leurs premiers-nés.
It was by faith they crossed the Red Sea as easily as dry land, while the Egyptians, trying to do thesame, were drowned.29 C’est la foi lorsqu’ils traversent la Mer Rouge comme un terrain sec, alors que les Égyptiens se noient en essayant d’y passer.
It was through faith that the wal s of Jericho fel down when the people had marched round them forseven days.30 Grâce à la foi les murailles de Jéricho s’écroulent après qu’on en a fait le tour sept jours de suite.
It was by faith that Rahab the prostitute welcomed the spies and so was not killed with theunbelievers.31 Et c’est grâce à sa foi que Rahab, la prostituée, échappe au destin des incrédules après avoir bien accueilli les espions.
What more shal I say? There is not time for me to give an account of Gideon, Barak, Samson,Jephthah, or of David, Samuel and the prophets.32 Que dirai-je de plus?
These were men who through faith conquered kingdoms, did what was upright and earned thepromises. They could keep a lion's mouth shut,33 C’est par la foi qu’ils l’emportent sur les autres nations, qu’ils imposent la justice et voient se réaliser les promesses. Ils ferment la gueule des lions,
put out blazing fires and emerge unscathed from battle. They were weak people who were givenstrength to be brave in war and drive back foreign invaders.34 font tomber la chaleur du feu, échappent à l’épée, sortent guéris de leurs maladies.
Some returned to their wives from the dead by resurrection; and others submitted to torture, refusingrelease so that they would rise again to a better life.35 Des femmes ont retrouvé leurs morts, rendus à la vie, mais il en est d’autres qui n’ont pas cherché à sauver leur vie quand ils étaient torturés, parce qu’ils voulaient bénéficier d’une résurrection bien supérieure.
Some had to bear being pil oried and flogged, or even chained up in prison.36 Certains ont subi les outrages et les fouets, d’autres ont été enchaînés et mis en prison,
They were stoned, or sawn in half, or kil ed by the sword; they were homeless, and wore only theskins of sheep and goats; they were in want and hardship, and maltreated.37 ou tués à coups de pierres, ou sciés en deux ou tués par l’épée.
These al won acknowledgement through their faith, but they did not receive what was promised,39 Tous ces hommes dont on donne la foi en exemple n’ont pas bénéficié de la promesse.
since God had made provision for us to have something better, and they were not to reach perfectionexcept with us.40 Mais c’est que Dieu voyait plus loin et pensait à nous: ils ne devaient pas atteindre le but sans nous.
