1 Yahweh then said to Joshua, 'Be fearless and undaunted. Take all your fighting men with you. Up!March against Ai. Look, I have put the king of Ai, his people, his town and his territory at your mercy.	1 E il Signore disse a Giosuè: Non temere, e non ti sbigottire: prendi teco tutta la moltitudine de' combattenti, e levati su, e va alla città di Hai: ecco che io ho dato in tuo potere il suo re, e il popolo, e la città, e il paese.
2 You must treat Ai and its king as you treated Jericho and its king. The only booty you wil take are thespoils and the cattle. Take up a concealed position by the town, to the rear of it.'	2 E farai alla città di Hai, e al suo re, come facesti a Gerico, e al suo re: ma vi prenderete tutta la preda, e tutti gli animali: metti gente in aguato dietro alla città.
3 Joshua set out to march against Ai with all the fighting men. Joshua chose thirty thousand of the bravestand sent them out under cover of dark,	3 E Giosuè si mosse e dietro a lui tutte le schiere dei combattenti per andare ad Hai: e la notte mandò trenta mila scelti combattenti;
4 having given them these orders, 'Pay attention! You must take up a concealed position by the town, atthe rear, not very far from the town, and be sure you all keep alert!	4 E ordinò, e disse loro: Mettetevi in aguato dietro alla città, e non vi allontanate troppo, e state tutti in ordine:
5 I, and the whole people with me, shal advance on the town, and when the people of Ai come out toengage us as they did the first time, we shal run away from them.	5 Io poi, e tutta l'altra gente che è meco, ci accosteremo scopertamente alla città. E quando quegli usciran fuora a combatterci, noi, come facemmo prima, fuggiremo voltando le spalle:
6 They wil then give chase, and we shal draw them away from the town, since they wil think, "They arerunning away from us as they did the first time."	6 Perfino a tanto che inseguendoci siensi allontanati molto dalla città, credendo che fuggiam come prima.
7 You wil then burst out of your concealed position and seize the town; Yahweh your God wil put it atyour mercy.	7 Mentre adunque noi fuggiremo, e quelli ci terran dietro, voi uscirete dall'imboscata, ed espugnerete la città, e daralla il Signore Dio vostro in vostro potere.
8 When you have captured the town, set fire to it, in obedience to Yahweh's command. Wel then, theseare my orders.'	8 E quando l'avrete presa, le appiccherete il fuoco, e ogni cosa farete, come io vi ho comandato.
9 Joshua sent them off, and they made their way to the place of ambush and took up position betweenBethel and Ai, to the west of Ai. Joshua spent the night with the people,	9 E li licenziò, ed eglino andarono al luogo dell'imboscata, e si piantarono tra Bethel, e Hai dalla parte occidentale della città di Hai. Giosuè poi quella notte si stette in mezzo all'esercito.
10 then, getting up early next morning, reviewed the people and, with the elders of Israel, marched on Aiat their head.	10 E alzatosi di grandissimo mattino fece la rassegna della sua gente, e si mise insieme co' seniori a fronte dell’esercito, essendo egli cinto da una guardia di buoni soldati:
11 All the warriors marching with him advanced on the front of the town and pitched camp north of Ai, withthe val ey between them and the town.	11 Ma quando furono arrivati, e saliti dirimpetto alla città si fermarono dalla parte settentrionale della città, tra la quale, ed essi era di mezzo una valle.
12 Joshua took about five thousand men and concealed these between Bethel and Ai, to the west of thetown.	12 Or egli avea fatto scelta di cinque mila uomini, e gli avea messi in aguato tra Bethel e Hai all'occidente della stessa città.
13 The people pitched the main camp to the north of the town and set up its ambush to the west of thetown. Joshua went that night into the middle of the plain.	13 E tutto il rimanente dell'esercito era ordinato in battaglia dalla parte di settentrione, in tal guisa che le ultime file dell'armata toccavano il lato occidentale della città. Giosuè adunque si mosse quella notte, e andò a porsi nel mezzo della valle.
14 The king of Ai had seen this; the people of the town got up early and hurried out, so that he and al hispeople could engage Israel in battle on the slope facing the Arabah; but he did not know that an ambush hadbeen laid for him to the rear of the town.	14 Lo che avendo veduto il re di Hai, uscì la mattina in fretta con tutto l'esercito della città, e dispose le schiere verso il deserto, non sapendo dell'imboscata, che gli stava alle spalle.
15 Joshua and al Israel pretended to be beaten by them and took to their heels along the road to thedesert.	15 Ma Giosuè, e tutto Israele si ritirarono fingendo di aver paura, e fuggivano per la strada del deserto.
16 All the people in the town joined in the pursuit and, in pursuing Joshua, were drawn away from thetown.	16 E quegli, alzate tutti insieme le grida, e animandosi l’un l'altro gl’inseguivano, ed essendosi allontanati dalla città,
17 Not a man was left in Ai (nor in Bethel), who had not gone in pursuit of Israel; and in pursuing Israelthey left the town undefended.	17 E non essendo rimaso neppur uno nella città di Hai, e di Bethel, che non inseguisse Israele, avendo lasciate aperte le porte, per cui erano usciti alla rinfusa.
18 Yahweh then said to Joshua, 'Point the sabre in your hand at Ai; for I am about to put the town at yourmercy.' Joshua pointed the sabre in his hand towards the town.	18 Il Signore disse a Giosuè: Alza lo scudo che hai in mano verso la città di Hai, poiché io la darò in tuo potere.
19 No sooner had he stretched out his hand than the men in ambush burst from their position, ranforward, entered the town, captured it and quickly set it on fire.	19 E alzato ch'egli ebbe lo scudo incontro alla città, si alzaron subito quelli che erano in imboscata: e andarono alla città, e la presero, e vi misero il fuoco.
20 When the men of Ai looked back, they saw smoke rising from the town into the sky. None of them hadthe courage to run in any direction, for the people fleeing towards the desert turned back on their pursuers.	20 Ma gli uomini della città, i quali inseguivano Giosuè, volgendosi indietro, e veggendo il fumo che si alzava dalla città fino al cielo, non ebbero più il modo di fuggire in veruna parte, particolarmente quando quelli che facean vista di fuggire, e correvano verso il deserto, con gran valore si azzuffarono con quelli che gli incalzavano.
21 For, once Joshua and al Israel saw that the town had been seized by the men in ambush, and thatsmoke was rising from the town, they turned about and attacked the men of Ai.	21 E veggendo Giosuè, e tutto Israele, come la città era già presa, e il fumo andava in alto, tornato indietro mise a fil di spada la gente di Hai.
22 The others came out from the town to engage them too, and the men of Ai were thus surrounded byIsraelites, some on this side and some on that. The Israelites struck them down until not one was left alive andnone to flee;	22 Imperocché e quelli che avevan presa e data alle fiamme la città usciti da questa incontro alle loro genti, cominciarono a offendere i nemici, che erano messi in mezzo. Essendo adunque gli avversarii trucidati dall'una e dall'altra parte in tal guisa che nissuno di tanta moltitudine potè salvarsi,
23 but the king of Ai was taken alive, and brought to Joshua.	23 Lo stesso re della città di Hai fu preso vivo, e presentato a Giosuè.
24 When Israel had finished kil ing al the inhabitants of Ai in the open ground, and in the desert wherethey had pursued them, and when every single one had fal en to the sword, al Israel returned to Ai andslaughtered its remaining population.	24 Uccisi adunque tutti quelli che avevano inseguito gl’Israeliti fuggenti verso il deserto e fattone nello stesso luogo un macello, tornarono i figliuoli d'Israele a sterminar la città.
25 The number of those who fel that day, men and women together, was twelve thousand, al people ofAi.	25 Or il numero di quelli che perirono in quella giornata uomini e donne, fu di dodici mila, tutti della città di Hai.
26 Joshua did not draw back the hand with which he had pointed the sabre until he had subjected al theinhabitants of Ai to the curse of destruction.	26 E Giosuè non ritirò la mano che aveva alzata in alto, tenendo lo scudo, fino a tanto che tutti gli abitanti di Hai non furono uccisi.
27 For booty, Israel took only the cattle and the spoils of this town, in accordance with the order thatYahweh had given to Joshua.	27 I bestiami poi, e la preda della città se la spartiron tra loro i figliuoli d'Israele, come il Signore aveva ordinato a Giosuè.
28 Joshua then burned Ai, making it a ruin for evermore, a desolate place even today.	28 E questi diede alle fiamme la città, e ne fece un cimitero eterno.
29 He hanged the king of Ai from a tree til evening; but at sunset Joshua ordered his body to be takendown from the tree. It was then thrown down at the entrance to the town gate and on top of it was raised a greatmound of stones, which is stil there today.	29 E attaccò alla forca il suo re fino alla sera sul tramontar del sole; quando Giosuè ordinò, che levassero il cadavere di lui dalla croce; e lo gettarono all'entrata stessa della città, avendo ammassato sopra di lui un gran mucchio di sassi, che rimane anche al dì d’oggi.
30 Joshua then built an altar to Yahweh, God of Israel, on Mount Ebal,	30 Allora Giosuè edificò un altare al Signore Dio d'Israele sul monte HebaI:
31 as Moses, servant of Yahweh, had ordered the Israelites, as is written in the law of Moses: an altar ofundressed stones, on which no iron has been used. On this they presented burnt offerings to Yahweh andcommunion sacrifices as wel .	31 (Come avea comandato Mosè servo di Dio a' figliuoli d'Israele, e conforme sta scritto nel libro della legge di Mosè). E l'altare fu di pietre rozze non tocche col ferro: e offerse sopra di esso olocausti al Signore, e immolò ostie pacifiche.
32 There, Joshua wrote on the stones a copy of the Law of Moses, which Moses had written in thepresence of the Israelites.	32 E sopra delle pietre scrisse il Deuteronomio della legge di Mosè, che questi aveva spiegato dinanzi a' figliuoli d'Israele.
33 All Israel, with their elders, their officials and their judges, stood on either side of the ark, facing thelevitical priests who were carrying the ark of the covenant of Yahweh, foreigners with the native-born, half ofthem on the upper slopes of Mount Gerizim, and half of them on the upper slopes of Mount Ebal, as Moses,servant of Yahweh, had originally ordered for the blessing of the people of Israel.	33 E tutto il popolo, e i seniori, e i capitani, e i giudici stavan dall’una e dall'altra parte dell'arca al cospetto de' sacerdoti che, portavan l’arca del testamento del Signore: eranvi e i nazionali, e i forestieri. La metà stava presso il monte Garizim, e l’altra metà presso il monte Hebal, come avea ordinato Mosè servo del Signore. E in primo luogo (Giosuè) benedisse il popolo d'Israele.
34 After this, Joshua read al the words of the Law -- the blessing and the cursing -- exactly as it standswritten in the Book of the Law.	34 E di poi lesse tutte le parole di benedizione, e di maledizione, e tutto quel che era scritto nel libro della legge.
35 Of every word laid down by Moses, not one was left unread by Joshua in the presence of the wholeassembly of Israel, including the women and children, and the foreigners living with them.	35 Non trascurò alcuna delle cose ordinate da Mosè; ma tutte le rinovellò dinanzi a tutta la moltitudine d'Israele, e delle donne, e fanciulli, e forestieri che dimoravan con essi.
