Joshua 8

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 Yahweh then said to Joshua, 'Be fearless and undaunted. Take all your fighting men with you. Up!March against Ai. Look, I have put the king of Ai, his people, his town and his territory at your mercy.	1 El Señor dijo a Josué: «¡No temas ni te acobardes! Reúne a todos los combatientes y prepárate para subir contra Ai. Yo te entrego al rey de Ai, a su pueblo, su ciudad y su territorio.
2 You must treat Ai and its king as you treated Jericho and its king. The only booty you wil take are thespoils and the cattle. Take up a concealed position by the town, to the rear of it.'	2 Trátalos como trataste a Jericó y a su rey. Sin embargo, ustedes podrán retener como botín los despojos y el ganado. Además, tiende una emboscada detrás de la ciudad.
3 Joshua set out to march against Ai with all the fighting men. Joshua chose thirty thousand of the bravestand sent them out under cover of dark,	3 Josué se preparó con todos los combatientes, para subir contra Ai. Eligió treinta mil guerreros valerosos y los hizo salir de noche,
4 having given them these orders, 'Pay attention! You must take up a concealed position by the town, atthe rear, not very far from the town, and be sure you all keep alert!	4 dándoles esta orden: «¡Presten atención! Ustedes estarán emboscados detrás de la ciudad. No se alejen demasiado de ella y manténgase alerta.
5 I, and the whole people with me, shal advance on the town, and when the people of Ai come out toengage us as they did the first time, we shal run away from them.	5 Yo y toda la gente que irá conmigo nos acercaremos a la ciudad y cuando ellos salgan contra nosotros, como lo hicieron la primera vez, nosotros huiremos.
6 They wil then give chase, and we shal draw them away from the town, since they wil think, "They arerunning away from us as they did the first time."	6 Ellos nos seguirán, porque pensarán que huimos como la vez anterior, y así los apartaremos de la ciudad: Nosotros huiremos delante de ellos.
7 You wil then burst out of your concealed position and seize the town; Yahweh your God wil put it atyour mercy.	7 Entonces ustedes saldrán del lugar donde estaban emboscados y ocuparán la ciudad. El Señor, nuestro Dios, la pondrá en sus manos.
8 When you have captured the town, set fire to it, in obedience to Yahweh's command. Wel then, theseare my orders.'	8 Y apenas la tomen, la incendiarán. Ustedes actuarán conforme a la palabra del Señor, y tengan en cuenta que les he dado una orden».
9 Joshua sent them off, and they made their way to the place of ambush and took up position betweenBethel and Ai, to the west of Ai. Joshua spent the night with the people,	9 Josué los envió, y ellos fueron a apostarse en el lugar de la emboscada, entre Betel y Ai, al oeste de Ai. Josué, por su parte, pasó aquella noche en medio de la tropa.
10 then, getting up early next morning, reviewed the people and, with the elders of Israel, marched on Aiat their head.	10 A la madrugada del día siguiente, revistó a la tropa y subió contra Ai, al frente del pueblo, junto con los ancianos de Israel.
11 All the warriors marching with him advanced on the front of the town and pitched camp north of Ai, withthe val ey between them and the town.	11 Todos los combatientes que subieron con él avanzaron hasta llegar frente a la ciudad, y acamparon al norte de Ai. Solamente el valle separaba a Josué de Ai.
12 Joshua took about five thousand men and concealed these between Bethel and Ai, to the west of thetown.	12 El escogió unos cinco mil hombres para tender una emboscada entre Betel y Ai, al oeste de Ai.
13 The people pitched the main camp to the north of the town and set up its ambush to the west of thetown. Joshua went that night into the middle of the plain.	13 Así el pueblo estableció todo su campamento al norte de la ciudad, mientras la retaguardia permanecía al oeste. Aquella noche Josué se dirigió al medio del valle.
14 The king of Ai had seen this; the people of the town got up early and hurried out, so that he and al hispeople could engage Israel in battle on the slope facing the Arabah; but he did not know that an ambush hadbeen laid for him to the rear of the town.	14 El ver esto, el rey de Ai se apresuró a salir con toda su gente para combatir contra Israel en la bajada, frente a la Arabá, sin saber que le habían tendido una emboscada detrás de la ciudad.
15 Joshua and al Israel pretended to be beaten by them and took to their heels along the road to thedesert.	15 Josué y todo Israel fingieron caer derrotados delante de ellos y huyeron por el camino del desierto.
16 All the people in the town joined in the pursuit and, in pursuing Joshua, were drawn away from thetown.	16 Entonces se convocó a toda la gente que estaba en la ciudad para que saliera a perseguirlos, y todos persiguieron a Josué, alejándose de la ciudad.
17 Not a man was left in Ai (nor in Bethel), who had not gone in pursuit of Israel; and in pursuing Israelthey left the town undefended.	17 No hubo un solo hombre en Ai o en Betel que no saliera en persecución de Israel. Y cuando lo hicieron, dejaron abiertas las puertas de la ciudad.
18 Yahweh then said to Joshua, 'Point the sabre in your hand at Ai; for I am about to put the town at yourmercy.' Joshua pointed the sabre in his hand towards the town.	18 Entonces el Señor dijo a Josué: «Apunta hacia Ai con la jabalina que tienes en la mano, porque yo te entrego la ciudad». Josué apuntó contra la ciudad con la jabalina que tenía en la mano;
19 No sooner had he stretched out his hand than the men in ambush burst from their position, ranforward, entered the town, captured it and quickly set it on fire.	19 y tan pronto como extendió su brazo, los hombres que estaban emboscados salieron rápidamente de su escondite, entraron a la carrera en la ciudad, la tomaron y la incendiaron sin perder un instante.
20 When the men of Ai looked back, they saw smoke rising from the town into the sky. None of them hadthe courage to run in any direction, for the people fleeing towards the desert turned back on their pursuers.	20 Cuando los hombres de Ai volvieron la vista hacia atrás y vieron la humareda que subía de la ciudad hacia el cielo, ya no pudieron escapar ni por un lado ni por el otro, porque la gente que huía hacia el desierto se volvió contra sus perseguidores.
21 For, once Joshua and al Israel saw that the town had been seized by the men in ambush, and thatsmoke was rising from the town, they turned about and attacked the men of Ai.	21 En efecto, al ver que los hombres emboscados habían tomado la ciudad y que el humo subía de ella, Josué y todo Israel volvieron atrás y acometieron contra los hombres de Ai.
22 The others came out from the town to engage them too, and the men of Ai were thus surrounded byIsraelites, some on this side and some on that. The Israelites struck them down until not one was left alive andnone to flee;	22 Los que habían tendido la emboscada también salieron de la ciudad para atacarlos, de manera que la gente de Ai quedó atrapada en medio de los israelitas, que avanzaban unos por un lado y otros por el otro. Así los derrotaron sin dejar ningún sobreviviente o fugitivo.
23 but the king of Ai was taken alive, and brought to Joshua.	23 Al rey de Ai, en cambio, lo capturaron vivo y lo condujeron ante Josué.
24 When Israel had finished kil ing al the inhabitants of Ai in the open ground, and in the desert wherethey had pursued them, and when every single one had fal en to the sword, al Israel returned to Ai andslaughtered its remaining population.	24 Cuando Israel terminó de matar a los habitantes de Ai en campo abierto, en el desierto donde los habían perseguido, y cuando cayó hasta el último de ellos bajo los golpes de las espadas, todo Israel se volvió contra Ai y la pasó al filo de la espada.
25 The number of those who fel that day, men and women together, was twelve thousand, al people ofAi.	25 Los que murieron aquel día, entre hombres y mujeres, fueron doce mil, o sea, todos los habitantes de Ai.
26 Joshua did not draw back the hand with which he had pointed the sabre until he had subjected al theinhabitants of Ai to the curse of destruction.	26 Y Josué no retiró la mano con que sostenía la jabalina hasta que consagró al exterminio a todos los habitantes de Ai.
27 For booty, Israel took only the cattle and the spoils of this town, in accordance with the order thatYahweh had given to Joshua.	27 Israel retuvo como botín solamente el ganado y los despojos de la ciudad, según la orden que el Señor había dado a Josué.
28 Joshua then burned Ai, making it a ruin for evermore, a desolate place even today.	28 Este, por su parte, puso fuego sobre Ai y la redujo para siempre a un montón de ruinas, a una devastación, que permanece hasta el día de hoy.
29 He hanged the king of Ai from a tree til evening; but at sunset Joshua ordered his body to be takendown from the tree. It was then thrown down at the entrance to the town gate and on top of it was raised a greatmound of stones, which is stil there today.	29 Al rey de Ai lo hizo colgar de un árbol hasta la tarde. Al ponerse el sol, Josué mandó que descolgaran el cadáver. Lo arrojaron carca de la puerta de la ciudad y levantaron sobre él un gran montón de piedras, que está todavía hoy.
30 Joshua then built an altar to Yahweh, God of Israel, on Mount Ebal,	30 Entonces Josué erigió un altar al Señor, el Dios de Israel, en el monte Ebal,
31 as Moses, servant of Yahweh, had ordered the Israelites, as is written in the law of Moses: an altar ofundressed stones, on which no iron has been used. On this they presented burnt offerings to Yahweh andcommunion sacrifices as wel .	31 como Moisés, el servidor del Señor, lo había ordenado a los israelitas y como está escrito en el libro de la Ley de Moisés. Era un altar de piedras intactas, que ho habían sido tocadas por el hierro. Sobre él ofrecieron holocaustos al Señor e inmolaron sacrificios de comunión.
32 There, Joshua wrote on the stones a copy of the Law of Moses, which Moses had written in thepresence of the Israelites.	32 Josué escribió allí mismo, sobre las piedras, una copia de la Ley que Moisés había escrito en presencia de los israelitas.
33 All Israel, with their elders, their officials and their judges, stood on either side of the ark, facing thelevitical priests who were carrying the ark of the covenant of Yahweh, foreigners with the native-born, half ofthem on the upper slopes of Mount Gerizim, and half of them on the upper slopes of Mount Ebal, as Moses,servant of Yahweh, had originally ordered for the blessing of the people of Israel.	33 Todo Israel, sus ancianos, sus escribas y sus jueces –tanto los forasteros como los nativos– estaban de pie a ambos lados del Arca, frente a los sacerdotes que llevaban el Arca de la Alianza del Señor, una mitad hacia el monte Garizim y la otra mitad hacia el monte Ebal, según la orden que había dado Moisés, el servidor del Señor, de bendecir primero al pueblo de Israel.
34 After this, Joshua read al the words of the Law -- the blessing and the cursing -- exactly as it standswritten in the Book of the Law.	34 Después de eso, Josué leyó cada una de las palabras de la Ley –la bendición y la maldición– exactamente como está escrito en el libro de la Ley.
35 Of every word laid down by Moses, not one was left unread by Joshua in the presence of the wholeassembly of Israel, including the women and children, and the foreigners living with them.	35 Josué no dejó de leer ni una sola de las palabras que había ordenado Moisés, y lo hizo en presencia de toda la asamblea de Israel, incluidas las mujeres, los niños y los extranjeros que estaban con ellos.
