Joshua 3

NEW JERUSALEM	STUTTGARTENSIA-DELITZSCH
1 Early in the morning, Joshua struck camp and set out from Shittim with al the Israelites. They went asfar as the Jordan and there they camped before they crossed.	1 וַיַּשְׁכֵּם יְהֹושֻׁעַ בַּבֹּקֶר וַיִּסְעוּ מֵהַשִּׁטִּים וַיָּבֹאוּ עַד־הַיַּרְדֵּן הוּא וְכָל־בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיָּלִנוּ שָׁם טֶרֶם יַעֲבֹרוּ
2 Three days later, the officials went through the camp	2 וַיְהִי מִקְצֵה שְׁלֹשֶׁת יָמִים וַיַּעַבְרוּ הַשֹּׁטְרִים בְּקֶרֶב הַמַּחֲנֶה
3 and gave the people these instructions, 'When you see the ark of the covenant of Yahweh your Godbeing carried by the levitical priests, you wil leave your position and fol ow it,so that you may know which way totake, since you have never gone this way before.	3 וַיְצַוּוּ אֶת־הָעָם לֵאמֹר כִּרְאֹותְכֶם אֵת אֲרֹון בְּרִית־יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם וְהַכֹּהֲנִים הַלְוִיִּם נֹשְׂאִים אֹתֹו וְאַתֶּם תִּסְעוּ מִמְּקֹומְכֶם וַהֲלַכְתֶּם אַחֲרָיו
4 Between you and the ark, however, keep a distance of about two thousand cubits: do not go near it.'	4 אַךְ ׀ רָחֹוק יִהְיֶה בֵּינֵיכֶם [וּבֵינֹו כ] (וּבֵינָיו ק) כְּאַלְפַּיִם אַמָּה בַּמִּדָּה אַל־תִּקְרְבוּ אֵלָיו לְמַעַן אֲשֶׁר־תֵּדְעוּ אֶת־הַדֶּרֶךְ אֲשֶׁר תֵּלְכוּ־בָהּ כִּי לֹא עֲבַרְתֶּם בַּדֶּרֶךְ מִתְּמֹול שִׁלְשֹׁום׃ ס
5 Joshua said to the people, 'Sanctify yourselves, since tomorrow Yahweh wil work wonders among you.'	5 וַיֹּאמֶר יְהֹושֻׁעַ אֶל־הָעָם הִתְקַדָּשׁוּ כִּי מָחָר יַעֲשֶׂה יְהוָה בְּקִרְבְּכֶם נִפְלָאֹות
6 Joshua then said to the priests, 'Take up the ark of the covenant and cross at the head of the people.'They took up the ark of the covenant and moved to the head of the people.	6 וַיֹּאמֶר יְהֹושֻׁעַ אֶל־הַכֹּהֲנִים לֵאמֹר שְׂאוּ אֶת־אֲרֹון הַבְּרִית וְעִבְרוּ לִפְנֵי הָעָם וַיִּשְׂאוּ אֶת־אֲרֹון הַבְּרִית וַיֵּלְכוּ לִפְנֵי הָעָם׃ ס
7 Yahweh said to Joshua, 'This very day, I shal begin to make you great in the eyes of al Israel so thatthey will know that, as I was with Moses, so I shal be with you.	7 וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אֶל־יְהֹושֻׁעַ הַיֹּום הַזֶּה אָחֵל גַּדֶּלְךָ בְּעֵינֵי כָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵל אֲשֶׁר יֵדְעוּן כִּי כַּאֲשֶׁר הָיִיתִי עִם־מֹשֶׁה אֶהְיֶה עִמָּךְ
8 Now, give this order to the priests carrying the ark of the covenant, "When you have reached the brinkof the waters of the Jordan, you must halt in the Jordan itself." '	8 וְאַתָּה תְּצַוֶּה אֶת־הַכֹּהֲנִים נֹשְׂאֵי אֲרֹון־הַבְּרִית לֵאמֹר כְּבֹאֲכֶם עַד־קְצֵה מֵי הַיַּרְדֵּן בַּיַּרְדֵּן תַּעֲמֹדוּ׃ פ
9 To the Israelites, Joshua then said, 'Come closer and hear the words of Yahweh your God.'	9 וַיֹּאמֶר יְהֹושֻׁעַ אֶל־בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל גֹּשׁוּ הֵנָּה וְשִׁמְעוּ אֶת־דִּבְרֵי יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם
10 Joshua said, 'By this, you are to know that the living God is with you and without a doubt wil expel theCanaanites, the Hittites, the Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites and Jebusites before you.	10 וַיֹּאמֶר יְהֹושֻׁעַ בְּזֹאת תֵּדְעוּן כִּי אֵל חַי בְּקִרְבְּכֶם וְהֹורֵשׁ יֹורִישׁ מִפְּנֵיכֶם אֶת־הַכְּנַעֲנִי וְאֶת־הַחִתִּי וְאֶת־הַחִוִּי וְאֶת־הַפְּרִזִּי וְאֶת־הַגִּרְגָּשִׁי וְהָאֱמֹרִי וְהַיְבוּסִי
11 Look, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of the whole earth is about to move into the Jordan at yourhead.	11 הִנֵּה אֲרֹון הַבְּרִית אֲדֹון כָּל־הָאָרֶץ עֹבֵר לִפְנֵיכֶם בַּיַּרְדֵּן
12 Now choose twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one man from each tribe.	12 וְעַתָּה קְחוּ לָכֶם שְׁנֵי עָשָׂר אִישׁ מִשִּׁבְטֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אִישׁ־אֶחָד אִישׁ־אֶחָד לַשָּׁבֶט
13 As soon as the priests carrying the ark of Yahweh, Lord of the whole earth, have set the soles of theirfeet in the waters of the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan wil be cut off; the upper waters flowing down wil stopas a single mass.'	13 וְהָיָה כְּנֹוחַ כַּפֹּות רַגְלֵי הַכֹּהֲנִים נֹשְׂאֵי אֲרֹון יְהוָה אֲדֹון כָּל־הָאָרֶץ בְּמֵי הַיַּרְדֵּן מֵי הַיַּרְדֵּן יִכָּרֵתוּן הַמַּיִם הַיֹּרְדִים מִלְמָעְלָה וְיַעַמְדוּ נֵד אֶחָד
14 Accordingly, when the people left their tents to cross the Jordan, the priests carried the ark of thecovenant ahead of the people.	14 וַיְהִי בִּנְסֹעַ הָעָם מֵאָהֳלֵיהֶם לַעֲבֹר אֶת־הַיַּרְדֵּן וְהַכֹּהֲנִים נֹשְׂאֵי הָאָרֹון הַבְּרִית לִפְנֵי הָעָם
15 As soon as the bearers of the ark reached the Jordan and the feet of the priests carrying the arktouched the waters -- the Jordan is in spate throughout the harvest season-	15 וּכְבֹוא נֹשְׂאֵי הָאָרֹון עַד־הַיַּרְדֵּן וְרַגְלֵי הַכֹּהֲנִים נֹשְׂאֵי הָאָרֹון נִטְבְּלוּ בִּקְצֵה הַמָּיִם וְהַיַּרְדֵּן מָלֵא עַל־כָּל־גְּדֹותָיו כֹּל יְמֵי קָצִיר
16 the upper waters stood stil and formed a single mass over a great distance, at Adam, the town nearZarethan, while those flowing down to the Sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, were completely separated. Thepeople crossed opposite Jericho.	16 וַיַּעַמְדוּ הַמַּיִם הַיֹּרְדִים מִלְמַעְלָה קָמוּ נֵד־אֶחָד הַרְחֵק מְאֹד [בָאָדָם כ] (מֵאָדָם ק) הָעִיר אֲשֶׁר מִצַּד צָרְתָן וְהַיֹּרְדִים עַל יָם הָעֲרָבָה יָם־הַמֶּלַח תַּמּוּ נִכְרָתוּ וְהָעָם עָבְרוּ נֶגֶד יְרִיחֹו
17 The priests carrying the ark of the covenant of Yahweh stood firm on dry ground in mid-Jordan, whileal Israel crossed on dry ground, until the whole nation had completed its crossing of the Jordan.	17 וַיַּעַמְדוּ הַכֹּהֲנִים נֹשְׂאֵי הָאָרֹון בְּרִית־יְהוָה בֶּחָרָבָה בְּתֹוךְ הַיַּרְדֵּן הָכֵן וְכָל־יִשְׂרָאֵל עֹבְרִים בֶּחָרָבָה עַד אֲשֶׁר־תַּמּוּ כָּל־הַגֹּוי לַעֲבֹר אֶת־הַיַּרְדֵּן
